We stumbled upon this place when looking for something new to dine at while in the USF / Temple Terrace area. What a cute place!!! Upon entering, the restaurant has this homely, cozy vibe with wooden tables and picnic style wooden chairs. We were greeted and seated immediately. We ordered the following: For drinks: Georgian Peach drink from the country Georgia and Kompot - a juice blend of berries I had the Goat and Beet salad and the Goulyash which a Hungarian style soup with beef chunks seasoned on paprika infused broth with peppers and tomatoes. The broth was to die for! My husband has the Sampler Platter which is a good choice for a first timer since you get to start a lot of plates in one platter. It had beef stroganoff, chicken keiv, golubtsy, lamb plov. I wanted Honey cakes dessert but unfortunately they ran out. So this gives another excuse to come back! This is part of our foodie adventure in Tampa, Florida. We really enjoyed it. The waitstaff were wonderful explaining everything. And love all the Russian decor! We started with Adjaruli khachapuri (Georgian boat share bread with mozzarella and feta on top and then further topped with an egg yolk and opted for the salmon gravlox to accompany it. We also had the Siberian Pelmani which are traditional Russian dumplings with a pork and beef filling. I had had these with different filling but we all agreed these were not our favorite flavor. For dinner we had Golubzy (stuffed cabbage) , Siberian style cod patties with a cabbage salad and kotlety, high are beef meatballs. I opted for a very yummy dark Kozel beer. Oh, and on table are these dry treats called Baranki that you can snack on while you wait for your food! Would go back again and try other dishes for sure. read more

My partner is Ukrainian and we stumbled upon the yelp for Babushka's and he excitedly started yelling out all the meals on the menu so of course we had to try it. We went on a Sunday evening and they were pretty busy. Our server was very nice and chatted with us about the restaurant. Everything was delicious. My partner said it reminded him of his grandmother's cooking from when he was younger. We came back a week later and had a great meal again. Second server was just welcoming as our first time. We haven't tried Hyde Park location yet because we love the feel of this location. This restaurant will definitely make it into our rotation of favorite places! read more

We have nothing like this place where we live so I always make sure I go when I'm in the Tampa area. The Chicken Kyiv and Beef Stroganoff are amazing. The Lamb Pelmeni has been my go-to lately. Best Dumplings of any kind I've personally had anywhere. I always finish with the Honey Cake and a Kompot to go. Waitstaff has always been attentive but not pushy. The manager is in the dining area working not off in some office in the back hiding like most places. They just seem to care. Only down side is the hard picnic table seating. Tried the Serbian lamb dumplings both in broth and pan fried (go with the broth!) the bread with cheese and egg in the middle , my husband ordered the stuffed cabbage , beet salad, and what looked like beef blintzes and all were outstanding. Even the plating was thoughtful and neat. Tried the homemade currant and cherry juice. Refreshing and slightly tart without being overly sweet. Even the ambiance was unique and appealing. Made to look like you were in a log cabin in Easter Europe with examples of traditional dress , crafts and music. Really charming and good service. I love to go to a place where I can't pronounce anything on the menu or even better, there's only a couple menus in English, you know it's authentic. We frequent the Tampa location a lot, so decided to give this location a try because we were told that this was the original location and they have extra menu items. Food was excellent! We went for my hubs birthday dinner and tried about 1/3 of the menu. The Turkish coffee was delicious. The sour cherry tea was delicious! The salmon bruschetta app was probably the best salmon bruschetta we've ever had. I can't remember the last time I've ever seen beef stroganoff or chicken Kyiv in a menu. The sampler platter had both along with cabbage rolls and lamb and rice. It was all so good. The cherry pierogies for dessert were the perfect size. It is a small restaurant so there's not many tables and we made reservations which I'm glad because there were only two tables available. Service was ok, she was working the bar, the register and the tables so she was busy but not too attentive. Food was very delicious. My fiancé got the Borscht soup with Pompushka & Salo. I got the beef stroganoff. We shared 12 pieces of Siberian Pelmeni's pan fried. For dessert we ordered the honey cake. Everything was so delicious, piping hot and fresh. We loved the honey cake, not too sweet and just right! There was only one server but he did amazing at bringing the food out at the perfect time. I got the loaded dumplings so that I could taste a couple different kinds. I ordered the schnitzel and the gravy was perfect. The stroganoff was super yummy as well. You won't leave here hungry that's for sure. Loved the decorations and the old country feel. The server was attentive and helpful though he was serving all the tables in the restaurant I didn't feel like we lacked anything. He was quick and responsive when asked for more water or a take home container. The food is really worth the visit to this restaurant. Just amazing quality and taste. It's comforting when you eat it. An updated review is in order! We catered Babushka's to our program today for lunch and my opinion has CHANGED. The beef stroganoff, cabbage, and beet salad were INCREDIBLE. I am usually not a beer lover, but this salad was the perfect balance with the refreshing beets, creamy cheese, crunchy nuts, and delectable honey mustard-esque dressing. I couldn't believe how good it was! The cabbage was also incredible with savory mushrooms mixed in. The honey cake was not to my taste but others thoroughly enjoyed. In addition, I guess I am just not a big fan of Vareniki as I still did not enjoy these but others loved them. I can't comment on updates about service or ambiance since it was takeout but I was much more impressed with the food and the development of complex flavors in the dishes I tried today. read more

We found this place while looking for something we can't get anywhere else and what a delight it was! We were initially nervous when we pulled into a small strip plaza but upon entering, we found a small, quaint, and adorably decorated place. We arrived in between lunch and dinner and were surprised to see they were busy, only one open table - busy is a good sign. After checking out the menu, we had a hard time choosing - everything sounded so good! We got a sample platter with their most loved meals (perfect option when you can't pick), another meal, a bread basket, and two dumpling orders. The Siberian Pelmini in a broth was probably the BEST soup type dish I've ever had. I could have eaten a whole vat of it. Amazing flavors I've never experienced before! We also enjoyed the pan fried sauerkraut vareniki as well. Our #1 favorite meal was the beef stroganoff - seriously - I could have cried tears of pure bliss. The lamb plov was next favorite followed by the golubtzy. For two of us, it was an expensive lunch but we ordered enough food for 4 and it was SO WORTH IT! We cannot wait to go back! read more

Some of the food was very delicious. The pelmini and draniki were great appetizers to start the meal with. I definitely recommend adding salmon or kielbasa on. I'm not a big cabbage fan yet even I can admit the golubtzy was the best thing on the sample platter. The cabbage leaves really complementd the meat filling and tomato sauce. The stroganoff needed more sauce (although this might just be a problem from the sample platter as the full stroganoff looks to have a lot of sauce from pictures). The chicken kyiv was fine taste wise but it had a very chewy texture. The restaurant itself is very warm and homey. Attentive and friendly wait staff. This was our first time here and we were quite happy with everything. We had loaded dumplings and the chicken Kyev. Both were great, however neither of our dumplings came with fried onions or pickle as advertised on the menu. I would have appreciated them being present. For me is not heavy cheese eater, we got all the non cheese and got mostly meat dishes. We still love it. We start with samsa - puff beef patties. Love it. I Also like Siberian Pelmeni. This pork dumplings can be serve in soup, pan fried, or boil. This is a must have dish. You can get 12 or 18 pieces. We also got smoke salmon blinchiki. We have everything on the side. The salmon is really best smoke item. The main dish start with lamb plov. This lamb cook well, rice may need to cook a bit longer. The chicken Kyiv is spectacular with light coating and chicken meat cover and infill with minor cheese. The last dish is popular dish in the restaurant- khinkali. This is very similar to Chinese soup dumplings in giant size. Overall the service is well improved and the food waiting time also getting shorter in compared to my previous visit. Wonderful evening! We found ourselves in a plaza that offers food from 4 different countries, and we entered into Babushka's- our friend's girls' night dinner pick. A lovely yet rustic ambience- features heavy wooden furniture and an adorably illustrated elderly, Russian couple are featured on all of the walls. We started with drinks- a Russian mimosa of champagne and house made kompot (so tasty, I got two!) and select international beer and wine- we were sad to see that a great Russian vodka couldn't be on the list! Sushki (rounds of cracker-like bread sticks) were on every table to share. We ordered a beets and goat salad, a trio of pirozhki (warm, stuffed bread rolls- chicken and mushroom was the best, chopped boiled egg, and potato), and the loaded dumplings plate (potato and sauerkraut and pelmeni or little meat dumplings covered in chopped sausage, dill, mozzarella, and fried onion) were our table's shared starters. Each dish was served beautifully with a rustic elegance using heavy pottery and wooden board- everything was lovely! We then decided on 2 entrees: golubtsy and beef stroganoff to share amongst the table- the stroganoff was the tastiest that I've ever had despite some chewiness to the beef, and the noodles were cooked perfectly; the cabbage rolls were delicious but the potatoes were dry. We were stuffed but we still ordered some cheese donut holes- hot, fresh, with a beautiful cherry sauce to dip! The two young servers were lovely and helpful with choosing dishes and explaining answers to any of our questions about dishes, but once the food came, they kept their distance and we had to call for them a couple of times. Price was great for the amount of food! Don't sleep on this one- there is a small parking lot, and the plaza is pretty unassuming- be sure to pull in and try it! Every plate that came out of the kitchen looked delicious and beautifully presented- we almost hoped they'd announce each dish as they came forward! The interior is so fun, unlike any other restaurant I've been to, and that's probably because it was my first Eastern European restaurant! Food was fresh, had a lot of fun discovering new dishes. I'm from out of town and enjoy coming to Babushka's for that "homemade" feel from the former USSR era/ Slavic food. This time was a slight disappointment. I got the beef stroganoff/Kvass and my friend got the 5 piece khinkali. The beef stroganoff was good but the amount of meat was a bit too little for the amount you are paying so would be nice to see slightly bigger portions. My kvass was also flat and felt like it was sitting outside for a while. It was missing that "kick" it's supposed to have. I can only speak from comparing how I tried it there before. My friend wasn't overly excited for the khinkali. Was a bit disappointing but I might still give them a shot in the future because the food is delicious overall. read more

Review #300! Time to try a cuisine I've never had before! Pros: While it looks like a standard strip mall exterior, the inside is rustic with wood cabin logs on one side and bench style wooden seats. There is a nice mural on one side that makes you feel like you're in Europe. Kvass drink is non alcoholic drink made of fermented rye bread. It tastes like a light beer and has a sour/sweet taste. The Salmon blinchiki is a folded crepe with salmon/sour cream. It was fresh and went well with the Kvass. There are a lot of options and I was debating going with that or Chicken Kiev. 4/5 Cons It's pretty small inside with 8 large tables. This place is more suited to families or large parties. I went at 6:00 pm on Sunday evening and was fine, but people coming at 645 were told to wait. If you were used to many Asian foods like Indian or Thai, it may not be as flavorful or striking for you. I am unfamiliar with Russian food, but it seems more "meat and potatoes" centric/hearty. Misc: Service was courteous and food came out relatively quick. Overall: I would come back to try other drinks and dishes especially in colder months. read more

Came to Babushka's to celebrate my friend's birthday last week. The seven of us sat in a booth near the front and the server was very prompt to serve. It was everyone's first time, so we mostly went with dishes that were named favorites. I ordered the Chicken Kiev. It is very filling and I liked the presentation, the taste was ok. I felt like the Chicken Kiev could've used some type of sauce to go with it because the chicken inside was slightly dry. Overall, service was attentive and the food was decent. I haven't found a plethora of many authentic Russian or Eastern European food stops in the area, but I had heard rumor of a promise land that contained all the best food from the region. This is guarded by the sweet Mrs. Babushka. North on 56th this little restaurant is tucked away in a shopping center, but once you know it's there this place shines like the North Star in the sky. As soon as I entered the front door I was struck by authenticity. Large wooden tables and chairs decorated with quilts and tasty little crunchy bread cookie rings. I accidentally ate almost the hole basket and forgot to ask what they were. Hopefully not decorative. Delicious nonetheless. Anyway, the real food and drink from the menu is what really knocked my clogs off. The entire staff knew the menu well not only because they work here but also because they were born and raised in the culture serving up the goods. Admittedly I was unfamiliar with most menu items, but landed on the chicken Kiev as it was listed as a house favorite. It is now also a Daniel favorite. Piled high on fluffy mashed potatoes were two chicken loafs lightly battered and fried with molten cheese tucked away in the middle. To make the perfect bite I combined these two with just a small dollop of sour cream and chive. Cool and creamy, warm and fluffy, savory and crisp. All of the flavors dancing together like the swirling of traditional dresses on the ballroom floor. Was I stuff? Of course, but could not resist the honey cake and a Turkish coffee. The honey cake brought so much natural sweetness which balance the strong and bold Turkish coffee leaving me charged for the rest of the day. At the bottom of the cup are the grounds that I could have used to make a wish however my wish had already come true at the conclusion of such a fantastic meal. The food is really good however the portions on certain items which oddly are ones with less costly ingredients and not difficult to prepare are small for the high price which is disappointing, the main dish that I had was really good and a decent sized dish for the steep prices. The service was very slow , rarely did we get checked on even though they were not busy and they were just hanging out behind the counter. The food took a very long time to prepare and we watched other people come in and eat and leave before we were done and eventually the hard wooden seat felt like it had bruised my butt from sitting there so long. My cravings for the food are not more intense than the discomfort of the hard seat and long wait so even though everything was quite tasty , I can't spend that much to wait that long to eat dinner. read more

We really enjoyed our first experience at Babushkas and tried a large variety of items. Everyone got a different dish and a few appetizers to try amongst the 6 of us. All the beverages we tried were tasty. We liked it enough to try it a second time. The second time we opted to do to go and the portions seemed much smaller and paying as much for what felt like much less was disappointing. It's a fun spot to try and I would recommend to give it a shot and check it out for yourself. However if you do not like dill ..... you probably won't find much to your tastes.
