This adorable, homey little restaurant blew me away with their food and decor. It had an authentic feel to it and the menu was full of different wines, beers, entrees and desserts from different regions. We started with the Potato Vareniki which are Ukrainian homemade pierogis, filled with potato & dill then topped with caramelized onions. Very similar to Chinese dumplings in texture. Served with sour cream and trust me it makes a difference to eat it with the condiment. I ordered the Duck At Dusk and it was absolutely delightful. Cooked medium rare, the pan-seared duck breast was tender, juicy and full of flavor. The pieces were small but the skin to fat to lean meat ratio was great. The presentation was beautiful with the pearl onions and tri-color carrots on top of mango-apricot gel, cilantro oil, date jus. My husband ordered the Sample Platter which includes sample-sized Beef Stroganoff (sirloin tip steak, onions and white mushrooms, served over egg noodles), Lamb Plov (jasmine rice, Australian lamb, carrots, onion, barberries, cumin), Chicken Kyiv (breaded boneless chicken breast, filled with mozzarella cheese, butter and herbs) & Golubtzy (cabbage leaves wrapped around ground beef and rice filling). Our favorite was the Golubtzy for the unique flavors and the nice consistency of the wraps. The mashed potatoes in the center was also fluffy and delicious. The parking can be a bit tricky but there's extra parking in the back. The service is friendly and informative but you may have to flag them down to place orders and get your check. I've been here a couple times and I really wish it was as good as the one in the USF area because I want it to be just as good and both visits to this location have been subpar. My first visit was with an event and not a normal set up, but wasn't impressed during that visit...and it really set the tone for the next visit.. I really didn't want to come back. But I did, it deserves a second chance, but unfortunately it fell short yet again. The service was friendly enough, but not great. When I ordered an item off the menu, they told me it wasn't available. So I then needed another minute to decide what I wanted. When the server returned I ordered another item and again, they didn't have it. But then proceeded to tell me all the items that were not available that evening. WHY wouldn't he have said when the first item wasn't available, all the other items that weren't available. I really wanted some vegetables....so when I couldn't have really much of anything but the dumplings, I asked if I could have some of the vegetables from the entrees that were all unavailable with the dumplings but he said he could not do that. I think the language barrier created some issues in this case. They couldn't accommodate much of anything. That's too bad. I won't be back to this location. read more

I came to Babushka's Hyde Park because I've been wanting to try a new cuisine and it completely delivered. We started with the Feather & Rye appetizer: chicken pâté with apple chutney and crispy onions on rye bread. I'd never had chicken pâté before and was honestly a little hesitant, but it was incredible. The chutney cuts through the richness perfectly and the crispy onions add just the right texture. For mains, I had the lamb chops that were beautifully seasoned and my boyfriend had the Chicken Kyiv, which he described as buttery and cheesy in the best possible way. The atmosphere is warm and intimate with really thoughtful Russian details throughout like the matryoshka dolls, the painted dishware, the candlelight. It feels special without being stuffy. Came here to celebrate my mom's birthday. I personally love this place and was excited to introduce them to it. The parking lot is small but they offer additional parking in the rear. We made a reservation for 3 on OpenTable and we were seated immediately at a cozy table. Our server was fantastic! We started off sharing the Feather and Rye, the Siberian Pelmeni, and the Mushroom Bliny. The Feather and Rye was a creamy chicken pate served on top of thinly sliced rye bread and topped with an apple chutney and crispy onions. The Siberian Pelmeni is traditional Russian dumplings filled with pork and beef. It is served with a side of sour cream. The Mushroom Bliny is served as 3 traditional thin pancakes filled with mushroom and mozzarella cheese and a spinach rémoulade. All 3 appetizers were great and unique. I think they all paired well together. My favorite might be the Feather and Rye if I had to pick! My mom and I shared the Chicken Kyiv and my dad ordered the Beef Stroganoff. I'm not personally a fan of Beef Stroganoff but my dad enjoyed it. The Chicken Kyiv was supposed to be filled with butter, cheese, and herbs. I did not see the cheese or herbs. I only saw a lot of butter. It is served with mashed potatoes and a boyar sauce. For dessert we shared the Honey Cake and the Napoleon. There are 5 parking spots including handicapped on the paved part of their lot and an additional amount in the gated area accessible from Platt or S blvd. The service was fantastic from the host, to the server to the food runners. I ordered the Samson Original which they were out of, and instead got Kozel which was fantastic. My friends got the St. Pete Mule which you can swap out for any of their vodka flavors how ever the bartender says it's the best the way it comes! For food, my friends got the Borscht, Serbian Pelmeni and the Khinkali. They had nothing but raving reviews. I ordered the Veggie Grill which came with mostly unseasoned vegetables but delicious potatos. The samsa was so good, especially with the adjika, packed with flavor and easily one of our favorite bites of the night. We tried the smoked chocolate old fashioned, the samovar spritz (with in house infused vodka-yum!!) and the Siberian sour! All were delicious! They held our reserved table for us while we finished our cocktails at the bar. They were extremely accommodating! At dinner, the Chicken Kyiv was filled with hot melted butter and baked perfectly! The mushroom bliny were probably my favorite thing - so savory, creamy with a delicious dill sauce. My boyfriend was amazed by his borscht with so much flavor. The samsa were perfectly crispy and flaky. We got the entree sampler to split so we could try everything -- beef stroganoff was my favorite, the lamb rice was a little dry and their stuffed cabbage was tasty. I was torn between 4 and 5 stars for this place, but decided to give them 5 because of their authentic feel, great service, and beautiful ambiance. Also, cocktails were AMAZING. I've been to Babushka's Hyde Park location about 3-4 times now. I love the authentic feel of the restaurant. All of the servers are always so kind and make you feel like family. My favorite item is the mushroom bliny (kind of like a crepe with mushroom and cheese filling) which has beautiful dill and mushroom flavor. The crepe itself has a subtle sweetness that is absolutely delicious. The smoked salmon on the Amur bruschetta is also very yummy and the entire dish is very light and summery. I love the beef stroganoff for a heartier meal. Their menu has many different options and a surprising number of vegetarian dishes. I also appreciate the variety in drink options, my favorite being the kompot (homemade juice from cherry, black currant, and strawberry). They burst with juicy savory flavor the minute you bite into them, and getting them pan fried is in our opinion the perfect way to enjoy them. We also got the chicken shashlik with their special kefir preparation and it was perfect. The tomato and creamy dill sauce were a deliciously flavorful unexpected surprise for dipping!! We ordered some Crimean tea with dessert, and the Birds Milk was so good we couldn't help but order two more!!
