I put it out to about a dozen custom cake bakers in the LA area who all have healthy IG followers. Of the responses that I received, Josel's stood out head and shoulders above all others for multiple reasons: 1. Josel was the only baker who wanted to ensure she fully understood what I was looking for and she actually provided me with a drawing/rendering of what I had in mind to confirm I was getting what I wanted - this was before I even made the decision to use her 2. I knew I was communicating directly with the owner/person who would be executing my vision - not the case with many others 3. Josel was still the most competive quote among all others, even though I could tell from what I saw on her IG account that her quality was better than most. Once I made the decision to use Josel, the experience only got better. It became clear that she really has a love and passion for what she does that surpasses this being a business for her. She touched base with me multiple times and scheduled to meet me several days before making the cake to pick up some of the custom elements that were needed for it. The morning of the day I needed it, she sent me photos and delivered it directly to the restaurant where it would be served, ensuring they would take great care of it. The photos of the cake speak for themself - it exceeded my expectations and the "birthday boy" was absolutely speechless over it. I've used multiple custom bakers over the years and my experience with Josel was the best I have ever had.

The cakes were supposed to serve 70 people or so. We ended up having quite a lot of cake left- the entire round cake and maybe an eighth or so of the sheet cake. The round cake was pretty hard to cut due to the height so I think we should have had the venue slice this first - sheet cake was a lot easier to pack back up and transport. That sort of made me wonder if I should have even ordered a round cake but it was definitely stunning and added a lot in terms of aesthetics and looked great in pictures. Jess was great to work with and did a great job checking in when needed. I ended up sending her a design for the round cake and she made something really lovely. She also found some gorgeous real flowers for the cake and sent me all the different options so I knew what to choose from. She even ended up adding some details to the sheet cake even though these are often left plain just for serving. We had discussed not wanting the cake to be too sweet and I think it was probably a bit too sweet still for myself and most guests. The actual cake itself was perfect in terms of texture and also flavor and sweetness and was so much better than most if not all cakes I have had. However the buttercream texture wasn't my favorite and I found it to be a bit sweeter than expected. I also wanted there to be a lot more triple berry butter cream/berry flavor. Some of the issue was also deciding to add a white chocolate layer (our suggestion so definitely on us) which didn't help the texture or flavor. Ultimately a solid cake and the vanilla bean cake itself was pretty spectacular. If I order again in the future, I would just discuss ways to make the outside buttercream less intense and find ways to incorporate more of the fruit flavors of the berry buttercream filling. A bunch of guests did ask me about the cake and say they enjoyed it so that was good. I did shop around a small amount and the prices were competitive. I had a very positive experience overall. The cakes were also easy to pick up and well packaged - if you have some kind of large flat surface like a foldable seat or back of an SUV you should be good. I would definitely order again for a party but probably would opt for even fewer portions and would make those notes about the flavors.

We chose a cupcake tower and personal cake on the top for our design. Omar even went the extra mile and met the bride at Michael's to pick out decorations for the cupcake stand (not something that was required for him to do at all!) The frosting was not too sweet, light and firm - the texture and presentation were absolutely beautiful. He was so detail oriented, and even included edible glitter for presentation. Filling was also not too sweet, tons of flavor - we had lemon and raspberry filling and it was amazing! Cake was more dense than typical cupcakes, as we requested and people loved it. They had vegan and Gluten Free options too that looked very good. After sampling pistachio, I had to have it. The other members of the family had mango, mint, stracciatella, and dulce de leche. Every single flavor was made of pure ingredients, not with artificial flavoring or coloring. It was just as good as being in Italy, or in any of the high end gelaterias in Little Italy SD! It was nice and clean inside and they even had a really cute little Vespa you can take pictures with ( not sitting on it;). The gelato is a bit pricy - $8 for a single scoop and it goes up from there, but given the quality of the ingredients, I think it is worth it to support a local business who is putting in the work and delivering quality.
