Stopped in here for lunch after spending several hours at the nearby dog beach. They have an outdoor patio, so you can bring your dogs with you and sit outside. Just make sure your dogs are well behaved as the owners dog appears to roam around off leash. We were here over Labor Day weekend and I believe it was the next to last weekend they were open for the season. We love BBQ so looking forward to a nice lunch, but sadly, we left rather disappointed. They only had one waitress working, so service was slow, even though it wasn't overly busy. I asked for a brisket sandwich with lean meat and she asked me what that was. I explained was just looking for leaner cuts of meat and less fat, to which she said, I don't think we have that. Needless to say, the brisket on my sandwich had a decent amount of fat, so not to my liking. The sauces were just OK, but my wife didn't like it at all. Sodas come from a can, which appear to not be refrigerated, but they do give you a plastic up with ice. Needless to say, the ice melted quickly and I don't like drinking a semi-cold soda. We noticed others around us were complaining about their meals as well. Overall happy - but let me break down the Good vs OK vs Not Great Very good - the ribs, they were quite good, tender, moist, smoky - exactly what you're looking for. Ok - chicken and brisket were tasty but my pieces were a bit on the drier/leaner side. The wait staff was also OK despite others' comments - were they young/inexperienced, yes, but come on - did these reviewers never have summer jobs when they were young? Not great - only 1 kids high chair for the entire place. Same as reviews stated last year; this needs to be resolved or risk turning away young families. Two brothers own the joint, (I think) drive their motor homes west in the winter and come back to Jersey for the summer and smoke meat! Good guys full on, sweet young ladies working inside and taking care of customers. So I got a full rack to go. $32 out the door which I didn't love but here's the deal. I'm saying it was worth it. Ribs were gigantic, easily two meals. Smoked PERFECT with a solid barbecue sauce and VERY classic nice Smokey flavor. If I take my girl out it's $65 if I'm lucky right? So get the beer and wine or wherever grab the rack and get back to the crib or the beach and get right. Very nice ribs. read more

Pulled up and as we were walking in, our fam was joined by their resident escort, Maverick. This golden lab (?) brought us to the back patio where smiling service invited us to sit at any four top we wanted. Food was hot, delicious, generous (sampler is legit and huge) and promptly delivered and BYOB was perfect. Service was conversational and personable without being intrusive and our dog even got a bowl of whipped cream out of the deal (and maybe some tasty morsels of smoked meat). If you're coming here expecting Franklin's, it's not that. You're in Jersey not Austin. We ordered dinner tonight and got their menu online from Yelp/their website. Prices are all wrong and they only take cash. Bit of a problem when you expect it to be the price you google. It was $17 more expensive! Ribs were fatty and they didn't give me some of my order so we had to go back. If they can't handle a pre-season crowd, how are they going to serve people during the regular summer season?? The property is a mess! I don't think we will be visiting again anytime soon. read more

Wow, BEST MEAL in Somers Point/OC/Margate/Longport area. Food was outstanding. I was so pleasantly surprised that their menu offered so much more than just BBQ meats. I had DEVINE grilled shrimp on a skewer (actually the best shrimp I've ever had), delicious scallops, flounder, crab cakes, mahi, plus ribs that just fell off the bone, incredibly flavorful brisket & pulled pork. Even the sides were great- amazing cornbread & "cowboy beans" that were to die for. This place seems so simple & unassuming from the outside (alongside the road by the bridge btwn Somers Point & Longport) yet it turns out to have this super-chill/relaxed vibe, like a little tropical oasis on the bay. Idk anyone would wait in an hour-long line elsewhere just to sit in a busy, loud, dark restaurant when you could be bring your own cooler of drinks & sit outside at Backbay BBQ soaking in the warm weather & fresh air alongside the lagoon of the backbay. Owners of the restaurant even stopped in on our table to make sure we were having a great experience, so the super- friendly customer service was an added bonus. Great for families! We go to this restaurant every time we stay in Ocean City, NJ, and my kids say it's their favorite restaurant EVER! The mac n cheese is to die for and the fried flounder is so light and flaky! Everything is good! Baked beans, corn bread, corn on the cob (get it 'wet' (with butter!)). High quality BBQ in casual setting. The air is filled with smoky goodness. Forget that you're just off the bridge and get ready for some excellent roadside eats. Def order the ribs! Not greasy or overly fatty. Just tender pink pork that falls off the bone. Great flavor and you don't feel totally gross after eating it. Mix the 2 sauces (regular and spicy) for the perfect dipping sauce. Shared the full rack with my husband and we were supremely happy. Scallops were super fresh and cooked perfectly. Just wish serving size was a little bigger. Mac and cheese was also good. Baked instead of gooey stovetop kind. Servers are sweet, friendly and attentive. Not sure if it's BYOB but bringing cold beer would also be a good move. One of the best parts: Ambiance transports you to a Louisiana bayou or the Florida Keys. Chill music (Margaritaville vibes) and a view of the bay sets the mood for down home smoky goodness. This is place is 100% crave worthy. Follow the smoky BBQ smell by the bridge and pull over. Decided to stop and grab chicken and ribs instead of cooking last night. We've ordered here a number of times in the past, but the dinner last night was partially inedible. We ordered a full chicken, a full rack of ribs, mac & cheese, onion rings, and cornbread. The only thing I would recommend would be the ribs - and they were not that good. The chicken leg/thigh/wing from one half of the chicken was completely dried out - you couldn't even eat it. The breast meat and the other chicken half were as dry as could be, such that you want to gag if you eat a large mouthful. It all lacked BBQ sauce, it just has some burnt on thin smear that tasted awful. Truly awful. The ribs were okay, with the bbq sauce providing moisture. Meat was tender, but nowhere near fall off the bone tender. Meat on the ends was dry, dry, dry. Probably the worst mac & cheese any of us have had. Tasted like overcooked macaroni with a bit of cheese and butter thrown on top. Just a bit. Extremely bland. The onion rings were fried after we ordered, however, when we get home they were not crunchy. Just batter-fried and soft. Oozing with oil. Nothing like I would expect. And the cornbread, oh so cold and dry. I think it suffered two bites before we tossed it. Those 60 dollars I will never get back nor gain any real value from. I only hope you tread cautiously and simple your food before leaving. read more

We ordered takeout and were told our order would be ready in 30 minutes, we arrived on time and waited 10 minutes to talk to the staff. By that time our order had not been started, and they were out of most of our order. Staff was not wearing masks, not wearing gloves, masks below their noses handling our food with their bare hands after accepting my cash payment (they only accept cash). The staff was clearly overworked but they were rude to customers in front of us and acted like they were doing us a favor by offering a refund (!!) for the items we ordered that they did not have. As people who smoke meat on our own nothing met our standard for taste and texture. Brisket was cut too thick. Most were tasteless. The sauces were non descript and in grimy squeeze bottles. Lemonade came in tiny cups. Atmosphere - umbrellas were in disrepair - place looked a mess. Imagine outdoor lights, nice umbrellas, placemats and even solo cups. Delicious! I got the combo of the ribs and chicken, both were tender. I got the dark meat chicken which was recommended. My only advice to others is that we ordered take out and the ribs and chicken did not have bbq sauce on it, so just an FYI, Get a side of bbq if you are expecting that. Just Left back bay and im very impressed, ribs were perfectly cooked and wingss were amazing! Sauce is out of this world! Server was very very nice and accommodating. I had my daughter who is just turning 2 who was unfortunately very cranky, tired and sleepy and the worker was so kind to have her pet their polite house dog, they were very understanding both the cook and one of the kitchen workers and that means the world to us young parents who struggle to actually sit down and eat with two extra hyper kids, thank you for your service back bay, you guys rock! read more
