Ate here last year, should have passed on the repeat visit this evening. Service was fine, food was awful. Writing this review from the Wawa parking lot, running in for ginger ale to push this disaster down. Ordered their BBQ chicken - first let me tell you the bird was charred beyond recognition. The white meat had the consistency of thread. Found a moist spot or two in the thigh. The 2 sauces are overly sweet served in squeeze bottles that could use a power washer. For sides - cornbread was probably better 2 days ago when it was made, would have potential if out of the oven. Cole slaw had absolutely no taste. Final note. If it is early in the season and you advertise "local corn" don't sell the item if it's not ready for sale. Love me some Jersey corn, blecch read more

What a huge disappointment, you drive by and smell the smoker, get all excited only to sit down to one of the worst BBQ experiences ever. Corn that looks old and is soggy with tiny kernels and no taste and coleslaw that has absolutely no taste at all, completely lacking any salt or pepper. As for the chicken, you better order a BIG drink in order to get it down, DRY as a bone, like rubber. I've ordered from here before and was pleased, not this time. The coleslaw was flavorless and gooey two bites and in the garbage. The mac and cheese was cold. I put it in a bowl and tried to heat it up and added more cheese, not fixable, I did eat 2/3 of it. I got a half rack of ribs the first few, the thinner part, were decent. when I started on the rest the meat was tough and chewy as if raw, the thicker parts were pink and not smoke ring pink I think it was undercooked, it went to the garbage. I was so looking forward to eating here this summer, very disappointed. read more

Wow, unexpected but great find. No offense to the people in the north east but I did not expect to find good BBQ up here. I grew up on Texas/Louisiana BBQ--we like our BBQ. This place is up there on the goodness level. We had the pulled pork, brisket sandwich, cowboy beans and Mac and cheese. Seriously delicious. And they're dog friendly. Because of their write up on 'Only In New Jersey' web review, since I would be in the area on Friday 8/12/22 , I decided to stop and get 'TAKE OUT' for the family. What a HUGE mistake that was. I threw away $40+ dollars on BURNT, DRIED OUT Pork, Brisket & Dark Chicken (Their "Sampler") plus got a 8oz container of dried out Pastrami. The only item that wasn't dried out was the ribs. Definitely NOT worth the drive. I even specified that this take out was going to be for dinner and that I was up from Cape May, NJ. If I was closer than a 40 minute drive, I would have brought the food back and asked for a REFUND!! What I did notice while I was waiting for my order to be ready was that the meats were in plenty of liquid when they dished up orders for the restaurant seated tables, BUT that for their TO GO / TAKE OUT they drained all liquid from the scoops which is why the meats were DRY. DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED $$$ ON THEIR TO GO / TAKE OUT !!! read more

Came here with my BF after driving past plenty or times - we were really excited to see a BBQ joint in the area. Unfortunately I was pretty let down with my food. I had a half rack of ribs ($15 for 5 small ribs - really?) and some cole slaw. The ribs were dry and room temperature when they were served - they had obviously been smoked overnight and left out. I've had better, less expensive ribs plenty of other places. The slaw was good but nothing to write home about. My BF's pulled pork sandwhich was good but I felt it had too mcuh sauce and red pepper flakes to really taste the smoke. Their BBQ sauce was molasses based - good seasoning but too thick in my opinion. I was most disappointed at the end - I went over to the pit master and asked if they ever have burnt ends - he had no idea what I was talking about and asked if that was some kind of blunt. Are you kidding me? You run an "authentic" BBQ joint and don't know what burnt ends are? C'mon! FYI - it's BYOB even though it's not on the website. read more

Soggy over sweet pork that had the texture of what I assume a wet mop would tase like. Had an off putting extra spice like cinnimon or nut meg that should be in an apple pie not bar-b-que - We also saw the owner being not too nice to a customer that had a complaint about the food . Caught our eye driving to another restaurant that was too busy, and we ended up here a few nights ago! The outdoor seating by the bay was fantastic, and we got a glimpse of the steam boat right out back. The waitress was prompt and friendly, and we even got to meet the owner who personally answered any questions we had and was very much fun to talk to! Great conversation atmosphere! We were able to engage with everyone, laugh, and have a great time. The meat was fantastically smoky! We tried the brisket, pulled pork, and ribs, as well as mac and cheese, onion rings and crabby fries. The sauce has a wonderfully sweet clove and cinnamon flavor. It's very different, and not like anything else I've ever had! I hope they experiment in the future with different varieties, they certainly could make a taste to appeal to all pallets. The meat was hearty portions for the price, and the ribs were fall off the bone with an awesome portion. My personal favorite was the mac & cheese. Although I was very full, I couldn't stop eating it! If I'm ever in the area, you'd better believe I'm stopping here again! Great quality smoked meat like this is a rare find! read more

Absolutely the best BBQ north of Mason-Dixon line. All of the food is authentic smoked BBQ. Simple delivery in styrofoam dishes. Must try the coconut shrimp! And don't forget to get some sides. Back Bay BBQ is the kind of spot I look for in South Jersey: family-run, no frills, a salty sea breeze, and simple and delicious food. Don't bother if you're not okay with plastic utensils and paper towels on the table. BB BBQ feels like a take-out place where you're welcome to sit and eat for a while if you're not in a hurry. If you do stop by, we'd recommend the ribs, brisket, jerked chix, and mac n' cheese. The "spicy" BBQ could use some kick, but was still flavorful and a savory addition to all of the above. The best part about Back Bay is the seating. It's right off the bay and pretty secluded so it's a very pretty place to sit. Okay, you need to ignore the traffic behind you, but really, it's not bad. Our waitress was... friendly. She wore shorts and a tshirt each about 2 sizes too small and had her belly hanging out. Although she was nice, she didn't give me the best first impression of the place. She kept telling us what she likes and why she likes it as well as how she would "hook us up" on our order. We got pulled pork, ribs, and the brisket to share, as well as the cole slaw. I kept reading reviews on here that the cole slaw was something great, but I found it to be pretty average. The pork was my favorite and I liked the charcoal taste in the ribs. They also have their own bbq sauce. It's very sweet and thick. I think this is where Back Bay was lacking. If they had a bigger selection of bbq sauce I'd be tempted to go back. Because of this, I'd recommend ordering, picking it up, and eating at home with your own favorite sauce. read more

Everything I ordered (blackened chicken, beans, cornbread) was amazing and delicious and perfectly executed to my taste (especially the chicken!!!!) I love the location, the back patio vibe with bright colors and tropical plants, and the fact that this place is BYO and very reasonably priced! I would have given 5 stars hands down except for two things that bothered me: One, the slogan "check out our racks" - which as a woman, I think is in poor taste and makes me feel uncomfortable. Get rid of it, guys! Not cool. Two, everything here from cups to silverware is all DISPOSABLE/plastic/styrofoam. It's 2018 and I know it's a BBQ spot, but seriously - this is a sin. My mom and I stopped here on our way over the longport bridge as we had not yet this summer like we have for the last two years. I called in a to-go order for a scallop skewer and a beef brisket sandwich. My mom went in to pick it up and didn't check the bag before we left. Once we arrived home my mom was extremely disappointed that the brisket was just sliced in a container and NOT a sandwich. Bummer. Even more disappointing was she could only eat 3 of the 8-10 or so pieces of brisket since they were incredibly tough. My dog loved them though so I guess it's not ALL bad. My scallop skewer was tasty and perfectly cooked although for $13 it would've been nice to have a vegetable come with it. The saving grace was the brownie my mom scooped up as an after thought- it was incredibly dense and full of dark chocolatey flavor. If we return, that'll likely be the reason. We are regulars at the dog beach down the road since we are only a couple of towns away. After reading about this place in our community forum on FB we decided to give it a try. The ribs were good. My husband was less enthusiastic about the sauces. Stay away from the jerk chicken especially for kids and be careful if you give any to your dog. We found at least 5 small bones in an 8 oz container! We were disappointed in the sides since we felt they were undercooked. We had potato salad which was a little dry with hard chunks of potato. Fries looked fresh cut but were not well done. The cornbread was much better after I put it into the air fryer for 6-7 min. We thought the food was a little overpriced but then so is everything in the area. read more
