This little local spot does everything right. The donuts? Probably the best I've ever had--fresh, soft, and packed with flavor. My kids are obsessed with the boba drinks, and I love that there's something for everyone: pastries, cookies, cakes, bierocks, fresh bread... the variety is unreal. Everything is made fresh daily, and it shows. The staff is always friendly, patient, and helpful--even when there's a line out the door. I honestly don't know how they keep up, but I'm glad they do. On our week long Birthday trip to the Central Coast, the wife and I must make a stop to get old favorites to take back home. Unfortunately the sweetness and purity of what we have been used to getting, did not happen this time. We purchased several items, chocolate chip cookie, snickerdoodle, snowball, brownie and other assortments, with plans to come back in the morning to get the best egg and bacon croissant this side of the Colorado River. So it was to our dismay that the some of the sweet treats were not so sweet after all. Some cookies were dry, chocolate chip, snicker doodle... crumbled when taking a bite, and white chocolate macadamia had the taste of a pan that sat "2 minutes" too long in their own.... So when returning the store the very next morning and attempting to get reciprocated for our patronage, we were met with defensive, rude, emotional eye rolling, employee behavior. To make matters worse, the "Newish" owner decides to intervene as he should and correct the issue "not problem" at hand. After our conversation it was said by the owner, "The items may have been in the oven "2 minutes" too long. I questioned why put less quality merchandise to sale, knowing that they were burnt.. the reply, "just because one person makes a complaint in YEARS" why would we change anything! read more

FOOD: Never misses! Pastries are so good; flaky, buttery and savory. Plenty of choices from sweet, decadent and savory treats. Breakfast croissants are filling and yummy. I haven't tried their cold sandwiches yet but when I'm in town again I will most definitely give it a try. They offer bobas, coffees and teas. I tried their quarter sheet strawberry filled cake with cream cheese frosting and it was delicious and moist. It was amazing. SERVICE: Always had very nice and welcoming staff. Even when they are slammed they were still very attentive, patient and kind. We loved to see it! They were quick with the service and helpful. AMBIANCE: Cute mom and pop shop. Nothing too crazy or decorative. Clean and no funky smell. Good enough space for quick buys. It is more of a walk-thru type of place rather than a sit down coffee shop nonetheless good eats. I've frequented Carlocks for many years. And I have watched as ownership has changed hands 3 times. Always, quality remained great, and prices stable. But this last visit I was schocked to find prices have at least tripled from what I've paid in the recent past. Shocking! The food here is fantastic. So much so that if I come within 30 miles of this bakery I will go out of my way to stop in and buy several things every time. My most recent visit the other day was a bit different compared to usual. Normally the service is great, but not this day. The young woman who helped me this Saturday afternoon was so unfriendly that if it had been my first visit, I'd have turned around and left empty handed. I decided to brush it off and ordered anyway since I knew what I'd be missing. If you stop in and find that the person who is helping you seems to resent the fact that you walked through the door, don't let it stop you from buying something, because the minute you take a bite of whatever you ordered, it will put the smile back on your face. The food is a solid 5 stars, but I eliminated one star because dealing with a person who hates their job so much that you can feel it makes the experience pretty awkward. I hope whoever does the hiring gets this sorted because bad customer service will eventually cause a business to go under and I'd hate to see that happen. read more

Carlock's has greatly improved over the years, both in its menu and its customer service. The latest team is friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. During my latest visit, there was a large crowd. The team worked together seamlessly, managing the line, effectively communicating orders, and building rapport with every customer, including myself. The team member who assisted me asked useful questions to build an order that suited my personal needs. I felt very welcomed, and I could tell that the rest of the customers felt the same way by their smiles. Thanks to the team member's expertise and efficiency, I was in and out in a few minutes. The environment itself is comfortable and cozy. There are a wide variety of pastries, breakfast items, and drinks, including some that I have never seen at other bakeries. I grew up in Los Osos and Carlock's the place to get your before school donuts. I worked at Williams Bros. as a box boy many years ago and one of the perks was to help carry over what ever supplies they needed that day a get a free donut for the appreciation for the help. I recently went in to relive those year childhood days but was extremely dismayed at what Carlock's has become. It's like they're not even trying to make a quality product anymore, the donut just looked sad in the way they looked and taste. The counter help were not very friendly and when I was help, they just piled in all my donuts into one bag instead of recognizing that maybe they should have boxed instead. The pastries and cakes are very delicious. I've been very happy with the items they serve and at a reasonable price. The service on the other hand could use some serious work. Many of the girls that work out front are definitely NOT very friendly or pleasant. Not sure if they're related to the owners, some are probably not. But they act like they just came from a funeral. The ambience can vary depending on how busy or crowded the place is. I've met the owners and they're very nice. If they just gave some attitude adjustment to the girls out front, the place would be much, much better. read more

Good little bakery. They do have a small seating area, so this is the place where you can take your coffee and pastry sitting. We learned that you have to come in early, well before noon to have a good selection to choose from. Locals are there early, so you should be, also. There were three women working there. The older woman, who was most likely the owner or could be the baker, stayed away from the counter. The other two were very different in attitude. One was taciturn, somewhat checked out and a bit inpatient. It was all business, no doodling around. Make your decisions, order your stuff and move on. The other woman was very helpful and friendly. She answered your questions as to what was inside or what other options were similar. Much more personable. Nice selection, good goodies. A nice place to take a break. read more

NEW OWNERS as of Sept. 2021, I just found this out now being July 2022 and I'M BACK! It was the husband and wife team working and I especially like their bread choices and prices! A changing variety from $4-$6 and they'll slice it if you ask.Cranberry pecan and olive rosemary to name a couple, great flavor and a good size loaf too . What's up with our other local bakers charging double that?! The couple is very friendly and polite unlike the former owners and that's what has kept me from going back. All the prices have remained very fair and the variety is good and the product looks better than ever. A nice big portion of bread pudding has my name on it for 4 bucks next time I go in. Carlock's is a new favorite of mine. A lot has changed over the year or so. Those changes are made with attention towards new, friendly, and invested staff paying attention to you want or need. Food: the scones, tea biscuits, crescents, breads, cookies, and sandwiches our outstanding, truly. Ignore the bad reviews. This place is fantastic. My wife has brought me home pastries from here and they've been amazing each time. Their donuts are arguably the BEST donuts I've ever had. I find most donut shops more or less taste the same. And I'm not into the "gourmet" donut shops around here. Had to write a review right away because I LOVED their spinach and mushroom croissant. I think it might have been extra tasty because we had just finished hiking so I might have to go back and try it again to confirm it's tastiness lol. Everything else was pretty standard including the ham and Swiss croissant. The Apple fritter had too much cinnamon in it for my liking. I also wanted a cream cheese danish but the person behind the counter grabbed something else and I didn't catch it. But they still get 4 stars despite all of that because that's how much I enjoyed the spinach and mushroom croissant. read more
