The coffee is fine but wow is the staff at this location rude. We declined a punch card since we're not local and when the cashier asked where we're from he scrunched his nose, said 'ew' and told us our total. He honestly went from friendly to cold in .2 seconds. That alone would not have warranted a review because maybe it was just a poorly executed joke. We laughed it off because whatever, who cares if he doesn't like the town we live in. However, we ordered iced lattes and several hot drinks ordered after us came out first. I'm a barista and know that iced drinks take less than half the time a hot drink does. Coupled with the insult, the delay in service felt intentional. There's a lot to be said about super friendly baristas. I've grown used to surly service in SF, so a friendly, talkative barista was a welcome change while in Bend for a friend's birthday celebration. I inquired about the hemp milk they offer and the barista poured me an espresso cup to try for myself as we chatted about the coffee scene in SF. My girlfriend recommended the cardamom latte and it didn't disappoint. Lightly scented cardamom mixed with coffee is a great combo. The ocean roll pastry was a buttery treat. It's akin to a morning bun, but better because it's full of cardamom. Are you sensing a theme here? If I lived in Bend, this would definitely be my regular spot. read more

The best coffee I've ever had. Sometimes I just open the bag of coffee and trip out on the smell of the beans. Dark chocolate with cardamom and vanilla undernotes. I no longer live on the West side of town, and when I did it was just a few blocks from Backporch, so I haven't been in in awhile. That being said... Definitely has the trendy Coffee Shop vibe going for it. Creative flavoring, spartan interior, not enough comfortable seating, soccer moms and the creative class partake in their caffeinated beverages. Don't go there if you are hungry and thirsty at the same time... They have the regular assortments of coffee related snacks to accompany your drink but it's not enough to get you through any amount of time. The coffee is usually good and I'm fairly adventurous gastronomically, but the last few times I had the Sage syrup it upset my stomach and I had to toss out about the last third of my latte. Yes yes yes. This place is where you need to go. I am from out of state and asked my server at breakfast which coffee roaster to go to for beans and this is where she told me to go. She was right. I got two bags of beans and a free coffee for the bean purchase. The staff was so friendly and the location was extremely clean and welcoming. There is no lack of good coffee in Central Oregon, but when I'm really wanting a rich, flavorful coffee with beautiful little hand-designed pictures on top... I know where to go! Really enjoyed the cold brew at Backporch. So much that it was our go-to place while in Bend visiting friends. I agree with other reviews stating that it has the trendy coffeeshop vibe, but I don't agree with the "you have to be young and cute to not be treated rudely here" statement. I'm not as young as I used to be (my age starts with a "4" now...how'd that happen?!) and my cuteness phase may also have peaked already, but I found the staff to be friendly and courteous when we were there. Give it a shot, and the worst that can happen is that you go to another one of the hundred coffee shops in Bend. Coffee is so personal, I think it is great to have so many choices. When I'm in town, though, I'll spend my money at Backporch. read more

I can't g give 4.5 so 5 it is. Very clean looking place. Not much as far as food but I'm here for the jolt. Iced drink was on point and the single origin macchiato was made with skill and care. Nice front porch area looking at a busy street with the sun shining on it in the morning. Staff was nice. Bottled cold brew and on tap. Not nitro. Packaged beans are in a white bag with black lettering. I love plain and simple. I believe they have other locations. I was watching the barista and I gotta say I love to watch a barista with skill. The choice to come here was easy. It is located .2 miles from the Airbnb we are staying at and had great reviews, (except for the lady who claimed a bad experience because she was over 50 and not cute). First off I received great, friendly, service despite being that first customer through the door on a Sunday and having recently celebrated my 45th birthday and even more recently my 55th birthday. I started with a cold brew and stuck around reading a book. I later opted for a coffee and ocean roll. I watched a steady stream of customers receive efficient service and leave smiling. The atmosphere is friendly, open and airy. I don't see how you can go wrong stopping here unless you are hoping for a metaphysical, live affirming experience that transcends our physical being. In that case you should be some where else, not a coffee shop. read more

Awesome place! They are so friendly and happy to make your drink! I don't normally get pumpkin spice lattes, but I asked which drink they thought was really tasty and they said that one so I tried it. It was amazing, the flavor was rich but still drinkable, and it was very smooth. My GF got the salted caramel latte and she loved it! Though this drink had a stronger "coffee" taste to it, it was still an amazing combo for her. (She doesn't like very strong coffee) On that note, I say these guys really know what they are doing. Service is fast, but WAAAAY overpriced. Bought a 16 ounce de-caf Americano. $5!!! It's coffee, but I've had MUCH MUCH better at other places. Usually this drink is $2-$3 anywhere else in town. The flavor and quality is not worth the price. By the way, my nephew loves this place, though I don't see why. There is comfortable seating if you're looking for a place to hang out. Yes! This is my favorite coffee place so far in Bend (although I haven't tried all of them yet, there are so many good ones here!). Espresso is smooth and tastes soooo fresh, you can tell that it is both roasted and ground not long before they make it for you. And the pastries...not made in house, but fresh and oh so good! This is a really convenient place that's popular but never seems to be entirely full, so you can always pop. They have lovely smooth lattes and serve a selection of Sparrow bakery pastries. Backporch Coffee Roasters. Simple, delicious, super good quality, and plenty of seating. Definitely worth going to as the coffee is super fresh, and the barista's are extremely well trained. My favorite thing about Backporch is their brewed coffee is french pressed, which makes it much better then drip. I haven't been to the new location yet since I moved away, but I hear it's stellar. Ritual, Stumptown, Verve, Intelligenticia, Cartel Coffee Lab... these are the coffee shops I compare all others to. I don't care about pastries, sweet vanilla "coffee" drinks, how much free coffee I get when I buy a bag or the yuppie to hipster ratio; all I care about is how the baristas use the tools and ingredients they have to make the best classic espresso drinks they can and how consistent they are day to day, barista to barista. Does the espresso have that sweetness is should? Did the grind get pressed too firmly? Do they know the proper ratio in a latte? Did they burn the milk? Is the frothing the right consistency? One that note, Backporch scores very highly as the best coffee shop in Bend. Beans are properly roasted: you won't see burned beans here, these guys get interesting green coffee beans and roast them correctly. Why is that such a hard thing for other roasters to do? Top quality machinery and a well trained staff that take pride in their work result in beautifully pulled shots. While they don't quite fall into that top tier of coffee I do consider them the best in Bend and don't hesitate to take my coffee snob friends there when they visit. read more

I LOVE Backporch Coffee. There is little in this world that starts my day better than a 12oz, quad, vanilla latte made with hemp milk! The staff is always so wonderful and seems so happy to be there. Really nice location to enjoy a coffee outside during midday. My wife says they have her favorite mocha, especially since they sprinkle a little bit of sea salt on there. I tasted it and the little detail really adds a lot. My iced latte was perfectly fine. Prices were on par. Friendly staff who did not rush us. Clean restroom and cafe. Very happy that the girl needed to find some wifi. Stopped in here and got a single origin cappuccino. The girl got a mocha, and both were excellent. Super friendly staff and really well trained baristas. They do a really good job of roasting the beans. If I were to nitpick, I would love it if they would make their own chocolate ganache. The chocolate they use is organic and pretty good. Just not as good as their coffee. read more
