I found this shop in an unlikely place in the middle of a housing neighbourhood near Commercial Drive. The shop is quite small to my surprise but that's probably because I didn't see the kitchen. It's well stocked with uncommon spices and herbs such as fresh galangal and fresh green peppercorns and other rare ingredients. They also sell paella kits, mortar and pestle, cookbooks and more. However, I find the selections very similar to the Granville location and there's really no incentive for me to travel all the way to Victoria Drive. But if you live in the east side, this is great place for people to get a hold of ingredients they've never tried before without having to squeeze their car into the already crowded Granville Island. Pop some galangal into soups or use coconut water in your stew. Life is indeed too short for boring food.

Came here in hopes of finding a few hard-to-source chiles for an enchilada sauce; left with two bags full of amazing imports. Mexican cheeses, fresh and dried chiles, corn tortillas, hot sauce, tomatillos -- this place is paradise. Even better, the woman behind the till (owner perhaps?) was super knowledgeable and loaded us up with some extra freebies of produce she couldn't sell. We will be back!

Anyway, they seated us at a weird corner table in the back which was super awkward. Not sure why when they had several other tables unoccupied. We ordered: Thai lemon tea - good but a bit too sweet. Very strong tea though. 4/5. Boat noodle - good. Solid 4.5/5. Nice noodle texture, rich broth, very similar to the ones I had in Bangkok. Som tum pra la - good but way too salty. The pra la is a nice touch adding some funk and authenticity, but overall too heavy handed on the seasoning so it's overly salty. 3/5 Silom grilled chicken - good. Juicy thigh meat. The sauce is excellent. 5/5. Pad kee mao - good dish. Nice noodle texture. They know their way around a wok. 5/5 Food here is legit authentic tasting. If you've eaten these things on the streets of Bangkok, this is about as close as you get in Vancouver, no joke. We asked for the spicy dishes to be "Thai spicy" and they delivered. If you like Thai level spicy, they got it. Service was friendly. The restaurant is clean but simple. This is not a place with social media photo gimmicks. Just selectable and chairs to eat their food. No unnecessary decor or fancy plating. Their prices are high though. That is their one big weakness. You can argue their portions are small. Relative to the price, yeah. But I find the portion size perfect. Prices are just on the high side especially for a casual joint like this. Overall value isn't amazing especially for this corner of East Van. Value-wise 3/5. Overall 4/5. Free street parking in surrounding neighborhood.

I've been looking high and low and maybe I've found my fav Thai spot in Vancouver…read more Silom Thai doesn't care about your Instagram. No jungle-themed wallpaper, glowing IG worthy neon walls, no angel wings to pose your pouty face, no Buddha statues collecting dust in the corner. Just a tight, modest room off Knight Street, humming with the kind of quiet confidence that only comes from doing one thing really well. As you know, once you get past the location, bricks, mortar, and initial wow-factors, a restaurant is all about the food and how it makes you feel. The food? It hits different here. Forget the watered-down, coconut-milk-heavy stuff most Thai joints in North America sling as authenticity. Silom goes straight for the throat--in the best way possible. The flavors are bold, unapologetic. Spice that wakes you up. Funky fermented notes that hang around just long enough to remind you: this isn't Westernized. It's not trying to be polite. It's trying to be REAL. Curries here don't coddle you with sweetness. The chili hits first, layered with depth--garlic, fish sauce, the tang of tamarind--and yes, lemongrass, but not the perfumed kind that smells like a candle shop. This is Thai food how it should be: loud, spicy, alive. This isn't fusion. It's not trying to translate CONFusion of placating the western tongue. It's a love letter to Bangkok--written in chili paste and eaten with sweat on your brow - feel it pool and drip while you suckle in the last drops of luscious goodness. Silom Thai doesn't just serve Thai food. It serves Thailand -- no filter, no fluff. If that's what you're hungry for, pull up a chair. CHEERS!!!
