05/18/24 at 11am I was waiting in a long line to get a bagel that my girlfriend wanted to try. While in line, I could see the food prep station from the window and I noticed a guy who looked like he just rolled out of bed (wrinkled, tattered shirt and sweatshorts, looked like he hadn't showered) prepping bagels. This was already a red flag. On top of that, he was not wearing gloves and he was touching all the food he was preparing... no apron and his clothes and belly were touching the food surface, no beard net to stop hair from falling in the food... I saw him wipe his hands on his sweatshorts and touch the food right after. He touched his phone several times while prepping food as well. Phones are some of the dirtiest items we have on us. I don't want to be mean, but these are food safety violations. This is only what we saw. We got out of line and opted to go elsewhere. If you decide to visit, see for yourself. Bagel Cafe has become a go to for my lunch hour. The bagels on their own are a little tough for me, but I enjoy the sandwiches and melts. My favorite item is the Gilroy (butter, minced garlic, and Parmesan + I add mozzarella). I get it on the herb cheese bagel and it is delicious when the cheese gets broiled and crunchy. They use real butter, which I appreciate. I also enjoy the Super Emma, which has pesto cream cheese, avocado, cheddar, and sprouts. This one is messy and requires utensils but is very flavorful. I'm not really into their breakfast sandwiches--the turkey sausage is flavorless as are their eggs. Also, it's very slow here to get your food, even on the weekdays. I always order at least 20 minutes ahead of time online. Overall, it can be a hit and miss place but they have some great lunch items. read more

It's been a hard week. Midterms are biting me in the ass and I woke up from a classic thursday night IV hangover, my head pounding, my heart racing. My body ached for an eggle plus. My day turned around when caught a glimpse of his curly flowing hair as he whipped around the shop carrying the weight of bagel cafe. Walking into IV bagel cafe, his smile lit up the shop and he danced to "suavemente" without letting his focus drift from the tasks at hand. Suddenly my head ceased its fearless roar and my hangover subsided enough to order my regular (which he remembered might I add). My bagel enlightened my being and invigorated my senses. I am consistently amazed by how fresh and good the bagels are here, as well as by how many of the delicious fixings are made in-house. Plus, they don't skimp! The sesame seed bagels have sesame seeds on everywhere, both on the top and the bottom. The employees here are patient and kind, even when there is a line. I've been here multiple times while visiting friends in SB but this time was definitely the worst. I got the five O expecting a bagel egg sandwich but it was open and a chunk of everything fried together. It was mediocre to say the most. I've had the salmon bagel here and they pack on the smoked salmon, although I wish it was put on more evenly so I could have salmon in every bite instead of just a mountain in the middle. There was a really long line on the Sunday morning I went, but it goes fast. Not a lot of seating, but there are a couple picnic tables at the nearby park! It was hard to decide what to get, since everything sounded so good. I ended up getting a Earth, Wind, and Fire Bagel Sandwich on a tomato basil bagel and an Eggle with ham on a galaxy bagel. It's great that they offer egg whites (for an additional charge) if you want something lighter! Also, they had such a big variety of bagels. The Earth Wind and Fire has egg whites, turkey sausage, and sriracha. It was super flavorful and had a little spice. I think I would prefer ham or bacon over their turkey sausage, as it felt just like one of those frozen patties :( I am such a fan of their galaxy bagel, as they did not skimp of the everything seasoning!! It completely covered both sides :)) The eggle was delicious with cheddar cheese and ham! I ordered a poppyseed, cinnamon glaze, and chocolate chip bagel. There was no one there and it was like 9am. Apparently they didn't have poppyseed bagels. Instead of telling me this or asking what I'd like instead, the guy gave me a blueberry one and cinnamon raisin one as a replacement. I didn't realize until I left. Maybe I would've been fine with a free extra bagel if I liked those flavors. However, I am allergic to both blueberries and raisins, so I could not eat either. The other bagels are subpar and more hard than they are chewy. Better off getting some at Albertsons. Don't think I'm going back. read more

When I still attended UCSB and my mom would come to visit, this was the breakfast place we ALWAYS had to have! We would get a breakfast bagel sandwich and a Sex on a Bagel both to split. The Sex in a Bagel is a MUST! For those of you who do not know what that is, it's a cinnamon glaze bagel. I have had the PB & J bagel and the Eggel breakfast bagel sandwich. But, today I decided to enjoy the Chicken salad bagel sandwich. It was very good. I wasn't expecting the cranberries in the chicken salad mixture, but I enjoyed it as it added a simple sweetness to it all. For all of your sandwiches you can order it from a variety of different fresh bagels! Watch out because the line is always VERY long and there is not a lot of sitting. If you bring a blanket then you can enjoy your meal on the park that is right next to the place. The bagels here are okay, but the staff do not know how to correctly toast them. I've been twice in the past month, and I ordered plain bagels both times: the first time my bagels were barely toasted (not even warm in the center), and the second time my bagels were also barely toasted but they somehow managed to burn the bottom (it was an everything bagel).
