3.5 stars is right for this place, as it wavers between 4.5 and 3 stars. If you come at the right time, usually a weekend morning, the bagels are hot and fresh and amazing. If you come at the wrong time - later in the afternoon - the bagels taste almost stale, are hard to chew and just aren't that good. The rotating cast of teenage boys that works at this bagel place doesn't help either as they have 0 customer service skills, seem like they are asleep half the time and couldn't care less that you are a customer there. Ok it's really a 5 star on flavor for the cream cheese (garlic and herb) and the bagel's texture (crunchy exterior & soft spongy interior). My reason for the missing star is because the bagels are small and I tried the salmon cream cheese which was ok. The garlic and herb cream cheese was AMAZING! Can't believe I waited so long to walk an extra few blocks to come here because this was THE BEST bagel I've had. By NYC standards, it was a little on the small side. Chewiness and flavor were off the charts. The bagel was hot, but not exactly toasted. I ordered with regular cream cheese which was spread in the perfect amount - not so much that it overwhelmed the bagel and gummed up my mouth. I was kind of disappointed in this Bagel Shop. When we walked in, the cashier wasn't even paying attention or at the register he was playing on his phone. We ordered two garlic bagels and two gatorades. Opening the refrigerator to get the gatorades was also kind of off putting because there was a pool of water at the bottom of the refrigerator where the drinks were located. Once we got to actually eat the bagels that was another disappointment because the top of both bagels were burnt. I ended up ordering my usually favorite, raisin bagel with scallion cream cheese ($2.80), and boy was it a mistake. First of all, there weren't many raisons to begin with and their cinnamon was weak. But what made it worst was their cream cheese, which didn't even taste smooth or whipped. Instead it tasted more like the hard cold cream cheese that you'll find in a supermarket with a few scallions added to it. Some of the best bagels I've ever eaten. The bagels were of the crispy outside, dense chewy inside variety. I was a bit sad that the toppings on the everything bagel were only applied on the bottom side of the bagel, but hey, when the bagel itself tastes like magical manna from Heaven, who cares? Surprisingly, it was the most no frills spot on the bagel tour. It reminded me a lot of some of the North Jersey bagel spots I grew up with. Just a counter and a small standing area in front of it. My first hint that the bagels here were special was by looking at them from a distance behind the counter. The texture/color/crispness pop out right away. I sampled here both a sesame bagel with egg & cheese and a plain with cream cheese. I enjoyed the firmness of these bagels and while it was on the smaller side it was still more than enough. So I work pretty much across the street from this place and one morning I was craving a bacon egg and cheese. I know now that this is not the place to go! So first I ordered it and the not so happy employee started to assemble it while the other not so happy employee munched on some ritz crackers. There were mop buckets on top of the coolers along with some other dirty bins of something. They had a couple of newspaper clippings on the wall with press from I'm guessing when they first opened. There was a line in the comparison of a real bagel and a fake bagel that will forever be in my head. "Real bagel chef Jewish. Fake bagel chef Korean." Really now!!!! Alright back to the bagel she scrambled the egg and put it in the microwave.....I hate microwaves! I asked her to toast my bagel and do you know what she said??? We dont have a toaster. How the hell are you going to sell bagels and not have a toaster???? Its like taking a cab and they tell you they don't have change or getting coffee somewhere and they don't have sugar or.....let me stop. It boggles my mind. When I finally got back to my store. Wandering through Park Slope I found The Bagel Hole by accident and I recalled some publication or another had deemed its bagels to be superior examples of the bready concoction so I decided to step in and try it. The name of the shop is pretty much a descriptor as well. Walk in and in only a few steps you're at the counter. There are a couple of displays on either side but that's about it. The place is pure old skool bare bones. I ordered two bagels to go (onion and cinnamon raisin) and I must confess that I got a bit irritated with two of the guys behind the counter who seemed more interested in joking around with each other than taking orders. A third gent stepped in and grabbed my order and put it together for me. I also ordered a quarter pound of walnut, raisin cream cheese for the bagels. I took the bagels home as I prefer them toasted and when I took them out I was surprised to see that these were not the big poofy bagels I'm used to, but rather a sort of meddle ground between the larger bagels I'm used to and a biali. I shrugged this off since I don't really need the extra carbs that a larger bagel would provide. Still, it's something worth noting. The bagels themselves were also a bit flatter than I'm used to, but when I cut into them they definitely had substance. The outsides toasted pretty solid and the insides were a bit harder than I'm used to, but still had a good chew. The walnut and raisin cream cheese was fantastic!)l I'll stop by again at some point in the future, but for now I say this is an okay place to get a "good" bagel, but nothing extraordinary. read more

The bagels are good but they are more dense then we like. The bagels are smaller then your average brooklyn bagel. Before I arrived I knew it would be "no frills" visually but I didn't realize that the experience is no frills too. No debit or credit cards accepted. You cannot get your bagel toasted. Hands down the best bagels I have ever had. They are delicious and I'd travel to have one. Unfortunately I think that they know their so good that they can get away with being lazy. The place is not updated, neat or bright at all. The staff while pleasant, doesn't always seem excited to be there and the amount of cream cheese I get on the bagel varies on who's preparing it. Now, don't get me wrong, that doesn't deter me from coming, because the bagels are lovely. It's just upsetting that it seems like their not going to try any harder to gain customers by creating a more welcome / pleasant atmosphere within their establishment. The bagel is a bit cheaper than other places in New York City. However there is not much lox in my lox spread it just tasted like regular cream cheese. The bagel itself is a lot smarter than others in New York City however these things are dense. The Outside of the bagel is very crunchy. I then dragged my butt out of bed and headed over for a $3 everything bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese. What? Yes, it's true! $3! I've walked past this establishment plenty of times so if you're not paying attention, you'll likely miss it. It's small and low-key. There aren't dozens of spreads on display at the counter. One lady was working the front and I saw her microwaving something in a bowl when working on my food but I turned a blind eye. I'm not too good for microwave-prepared food and after all, I was there to judge the bagel itself. I must say their bagels are perfect. You don't need toasting because they're already fresh and hot. My bagel had a crispy crust on the outside with a good amount of everything seasoning on top. Bring cash if you don't want to pay the extra card fee.
