Having grown up in the 718, whenever I'm in NY, I usually don't venture into Manhattan since I've done most of the touristy stuff and stay in Brooklyn to hang out with family. But one thing I ALWAYS gotta do is have a NY bagel. I've lived in the DC Metro area for over 20 years, and I still can't find a shop to get an even half decent bagel; and don't get me started on "pizza" which usually runs the gamut of mediocre to abysmal. I think the difference really does come down to "the water," as New Yorkers jokingly often cite as the reason baked goods taste better. The water in the DC area has a strong chlorine after taste and leaves a "heavy" almost metallic mouth feel. By contrast, the water out of the tap in Brooklyn almost has an "effervescent" quality where it bubbles momentarily and it has a clean light finish. Regardless of what is the secret sauce, H&L Bagels serves some of the best (definitely the best in Bay Ridge) bagels in all of Brooklyn. A quick Yelp search will return many more well-known bagel joints, but I prefer smaller neighborhood gems like H&L. To me, this place is a combo of part bodega and part bagel bakery. Walk into the narrow store, and the front part has a deli case with the usual assortment of cold cuts, cheese, and prepared salads. But then as you get closer to the back, that's where the good stuff is located: the bagels. There are an assortment of flavors, but whenever I'm in town, I gotta go with the sesame, onion, and everything bagels. And what makes these so good is the slightly crunchy exterior with a pillowy soft chewy interior. And you know these are all hand rolled, water boiled, and then baked as all of the bagels have an irregular shape with some being more round or elongated; but I'll take hand made over supermarket mass produced any day. This place is take out (and cash) only, so after I get back to my brother's place, I smear on a light coating of butter or cream cheese, and it's like I'm 10 years old again. On my most recent trip, I took back a dozen bagels with me to Virginia, and can I tell you that even after 6 days of the bagels remaining out on the kitchen counter in a paper bag, they stayed fresh and just needed a few minutes in the toaster for revival. Try that with any super market or Costco bagels, cuz after 3 days, those kinds have the consistency of hockey pucks. And (as of this review) at $1.15/bagel, that is a steal for this quality item. Unless you have family in the area or are passing through to Staten Island, you typically aren't going to be in this section of Bay Ridge. But if you happen to find yourself near H&L Bagels, stop in and grab a 1/2 dozen...you'll thank me for it later.

H & L is one of those decent bagel stores that'll get the job done when it comes to your breakfast. Isn't the best bagel I had but certainly wasn't the worst. For me it was just a bit too crisp for a bagel. Maybe it was baked too long after boiling? The place is old school and the workers are definitely friendly here. You're also able to see the entire baking process in the back while you wait on your order. Long lines around 8am means this place has a following. Not the best but defining not the worst.

    Bagel with lox

I've never had an egg-everything bagel before and it was great! Fresh lox and good cream cheese. The employees are very kind and hard working people. Super pleasant to talk to! This is def one of the best bagels I've had in Brooklyn (and NYC generally). Oh and make sure you have cash!

Everything bagel with lox and scallion cream cheese (excuse my bite, haha)

Good bagels, not as big as bagel boy but probably more recently baked. Oven on premises helps with that I suppose.

I asked for their advice on what kind of lox to order and they cut me a healthy slice to try of each. And the lox is to die for. The nova is the classic, but also got some gravlax and the pastrami lox. All had their unique flavors that were distinctly different. Amazing! And yes ~$60/pound is expensive, but it's artisan, hand carved and they even cut out the little bit of blood line so every bit is perfect. It's worth the splurge every once in a while. I will say though the bagels there were just meh unfortunately. Kinda average and on this day below average if you ask me. It was about a 20 minute wait from enter the shop, grabbing a ticket, waiting for your number to be called, ordering the sandwich, getting the food and paying. Waiting for your number to be called happens faster than you think as people do drop out like flies, so just be patient. If you order yourself a Classic Bagel & Lox Sandwich ($17) like I did, you can watch them filet the salmon fresh from the fish itself to be used just for your sandwich. I did everything bagel and choose Scallion cream cheese, which seems like the popular choice. It's good enough to go out of the way to try once in your life. To be a repeat customer, idk if I want to wait in line for this every weekend. Additionally, there's no seating besides the benches that's outside. I do have to give it to them, among the chaos, the employee that helped me was super friendly. I also saw some of the customers get salmon samples of the salmon for the lox. Idk if they asked or the employee just happened to be offering it.

The texture was chewy and a bit doughy if you like your bagels that texture this may be the spot for you. Overall my bagel was about 10-12$ I believe. They charge extra for a rainbow bagel and other specialty bagels like jalapeño. Which is pretty expensive so make sure you're aware of that. Service: 3/5 The customer service was mediocre.
