I was super excited to try some authentic New York bagels, and Bagelsmith came highly recommended. However, the meal fell a little short for me. For starters, it was almost $10 for a vegetarian bagel sandwich (I got the eggplant sandwich on a sourdough bagel, which consisted of eggplant, mozzarella, and sun dried tomatoes). Secondly, my bagel was incredibly oily, to the point it was dripping oil every bite. Additionally, there was only 3 counter seats in the restaurant. Given that it is New York, it was very difficult for us to find a place to sit and eat. 1. One thing I look forward to when I come to NYC are good bagels. For me the test of a good bagel is if it's good plain. That's right just the bagel, maybe toasted but just bagel. Went in this morning, ordered 3 bagels - two with cream cheese and lox; and another with cream cheese and tomato, all toasted, latter scooped. Simple enough, right? NOPE. None of the bagels were toasted, bagel wasn't scooped, there was no lox. All in, spent $30. The man who took our order nodded and acknowledged every aspect of this order, but just didn't execute. Bagelsmith is my go-to for bagels. I've been here many times and it's consistently delicious and fairly cheap. The lines get really long on weekend mornings and the space itself is small so it starts to feel overwhelming but it moves fairly quickly. Things of note: A few stools by the window if you want to sit. Offers the typical deli-ish style sandwiches. An ATM on site. Used to have a card minimum but NO MORE! Typical coffee/iced coffee offerings + a cooler with sodas/milk/water, etc. Baked goodies like brownies and cookies. But seriously, just getcha a bagel and get on outta there to make room for the rest of us! read more

I am posting a new review in response to the owner's narrative and his "intoxicated" labeling that are not accurate. I would like to clarify a few things for the people who risk finding themselves in a similar situation. First, let me affirm that the wait was 30mns, as the footage of the cameras would clearly show. I have proof of when I docked my bike on N 6th and Bedford (11:56 pm) around the corner and went straight to the store. I only decided to approach the person in charge to seek explanation, after noticing on my watch that I had been waiting for 30mns. Even in the case of a 10 mn wait, when a customer asks for clarification on a order's status, this is no excuse for the attitude that I was confronted with...she could have at least inquired about it. Secondly, at the outset when i approached the person in charge asking for clarifications on the delay, i was confronted first by her asking me directly whether I still wanted my sandwich, while still refusing to give me any explanation, and without taking any step to inquire about the status of the sandwich. The person then said that if i kept insisting and not leaving the store, she would call the police. The person in charge gave me a refund only when she actually asked me to leave because I insisted to have an explanation. To sum it up, in this store when a customer waits almost 30mns for a sandwich, the customer receives no spontaneous apology or explanations. Even when asking for an explanation, customers are given a choice between, waiting for the sandwich still (and still with no attempt to give an explanation) and refunding for a sandwich after all that wait as if nothing happened OR being threatened by a totally unjustified police intervention. I am not sure this is a good way of doing business. And besides, this business owner thinks that getting money back was supposed to be enough to make the customer accept this total lack of respect. And I have to add that after reading his response today, I took the step of going to the store and tried to have a civilized conversation but I was met with a closed attitude. My review is for the establishment's procedures during the pandemic and the staff's willingness to follow them. CDC recommendations, executive orders, and even a sign directly behind this woman advising that a mask must be worn, yet this woman was not wearing one and didn't even have one close. When asked if she had a mask so that I could pay I got an attitude. She went to the back, got a mask and held it on her face. When she came back I pointed to the establishment's own sign directly behind her; more attitude. The minute that my transaction was over she turned, took the mask off, and headed for the back. I was gonna order online and just pick it up but they charge a $1.75 convenience fee to do that. It all came to $18 for chicken salad and tomato on an everything bagel!! That's crazy! So I went there to order to avoid the convenience fee and I discovered that in the store the same chicken salad with tomato on an everything bagel is priced at $10.75. Online it costs $15.00!! Plus $1.75 "Convenience fee." They have some nerve charging $4.25 more to order online and then adding on the convenience fee. Long story short- Don't order online. It's a double rip off. Better yet don't even go there. The sandwich was bland and the bagel was hard and tough. If you read my other reviews you'll see I'm pretty positive. If I don't like a place I usually won't leave a review. But I've really had it with this place and I feel they deserve to be called out for this nonsense.
