We were given complimentary chips and salsa and then ordered some drinks that came with watermelon garnish. We shared the spicy mango ceviche and a cheese crisp for our appetizers. Both were delicious! The cheese crisp was very interesting! We opted for the spicy tiger shrimp fajitas for our entree. It's served with blistered peppers, charred onions, jack cheese, guacamole, salsa fresca, sour cream, choice of beans and tortillas. It was very tasty! We ended up trying frozen margarita and an agua fresca as well. The frozen margarita is so refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. For dessert, we got the tres leches cake and it was the perfect ending to our dinner.

The vibe of the restaurant was pretty dope. They have an outdoor seating area blended with indoor seating. The decor was stunning. I loved the wallpaper and light fixtures. The tunes were bumpin'. The restaurant wasn't surprisingly too busy and was pretty family-friendly. I was so excited to take a bite into my first CA tacos! As I settled in and opened the menu, full transparency: I was shocked to see the "happy hour specials: $7 tacos"... regularly $14!? Thinking these HAD to be next-level incredible, I stopped judging and ordered two "Birria" tacos, two "traditional Carnitas" tacos, and a "crispy shell Ground Beef" taco. We paired our tacos with their "Classic" house Margarita. Chips and salsa were brought to the table with our drinks, and we enjoyed those for a bit before the food came out. I wish I were writing this to report that I had the best tacos of my life, but sadly, that's not the case. The Birria taco had an excessive amount of untrimmed fat in the meat, which made each bite unpleasant and forced me to spit out pieces I couldn't chew. This made the overall texture unappealing and the experience disappointing. Not my preferred way to enjoy my tacos. I don't believe this was an issue of happy hour pricing, but rather poor food preparation. I was only able to finish one taco and took the other to-go. As for the traditional carnitas taco, it was okay but lacked anything that set it apart. I say this with kindness, but if you've had a TB crunchy taco supreme, you've tried this restaurant's crispy shell ground beef taco. The classic margaritas were strong and well made. We thoroughly enjoyed them! If you asked me, would I go back for seconds? I'd likely not reorder the tacos. For the price, I expected higher-quality preparation and presentation; instead, it fell short. Personally, I'm glad I visited during Happy Hour. I'd file this one under cool place for drinks and a light bite, if you must.

We also got a super spicy one, and sadly not the creamy chipotle one. Before they used to give variety of each salsa. The burrito came cold and it's only a short drive away! The wrapping of the carne asada burrito needs work since there's too much tortilla overlap, imo! The packaging is much different now as it's in a plastic bag rather than paper. They do have a cute sticker saying thank you for supporting local/small business! The meat is cooked well and it's not too salty. Pico is fresh and delicious. It would definitely be much more tasty if it was hot or even the slightest bit warm. I've ordered from them before and the food always came piping hot-- so it was def a surprise today. Luckily, you can't go wrong with Mexican Coca Cola! My dad always would order one when we got Mexican food.

The service is always kind and I've been fortunate enough to try their elote despite it not being on the menu. I hope they end up adding it to their menu as they applied a generous layer of mayo, cheese and lime, making it quite tasty. Unfortunately I tried ordering their agua frescas multiple times and they're always sold out. *Carne Asada Burrito: nicely toasted tortilla wrapped around tender carne asada, guacamole and pico de gallo. The pico de gallo is always juicy and fresh. The burrito is filled well with meat and the ratio of carne asada to toppings is ideal. I often find carne asada overly salty but the seasoning here is just enough. *Large Adobada Fries: a saltier and drier option. The fries are already seasoned so the overall combination with the adobada is too salty for me. The creamy guacamole, sour cream and cheese counteract that profile but I wished it also came with pico de gallo. However, this was quite hefty and filling compared to other fries. *La Mesa Fries: an even greater hefty mix of asada and adobada atop fries. In addition to all the other toppings, there's also chiptole sauce and cotija cheese. Once again, I wanted pico de gallo to offset the salt content. I'm appreciative of how much meat is included. *Horchata: the only agua fresca I managed to try and it wasn't my favorite. It was on the watery side and there was minimal cinnamon flavor. *Ceviche Tostada: the tostadas are made inhouse but they're on the greasier side. The ceviche came with plump shrimp, onion, tomato, cucumber and peppers. The lime marinade was refreshing and sour. One of their few seafood options and it was enjoyable and light. Although the sauces cost more online, we were given them for free in person. The red and green sauces were classic while the habanero hot offered an even spicier option. The chipotle was creamy, spicy, and smokey. Overall, the fries are a bit too salty for me but every other dish was one of my favorites. La Mesa is truly fortunate to have such a tasty and consistent Mexican spot.

We ordered the green chile cheese burgers. First of all, the buns were so buttery and soft! But the star was the green chile of course! They were so good! We also ordered the Koko Tacos, which are New Mexican style (beef and potato) and it just soooo good! The salsa reminded me of Sadie's (you know what I'm talking about!) And to top off everything was the red and green chile cheese fries. My husband ordered the red, I ordered the green. They were both delicious! You definitely need to try this place out!!! It was perfect! The service was amazing as well! Everything was hot when it came out. THANK YOU!!!!!
