When you visit Stonington Boro, you're most likely assuming this quaint, quiet New England village…read morewould be known for traditional seaside fare: crab cakes and lobster rolls, with corn on the cob and a bit of coleslaw for sides. You'd be right, there are restaurants here serving such standard cuisine, but what makes a trip to the Boro special is a trip to Milagro Cafe, serving the best Mexican food and drink in Southeastern Connecticut. Having eaten in dozens of Mexican restaurants from Texas to NYC over the years, my wife Pat and I were thrilled to find Milagro: sure, it has traditional burritos and tacos dishes, but the chef's take combining Mexican fare with an American twist is special. Last night I had braised beef enchiladas, while Pat chose roasted pork with tomatillo and cactus sauce-- both incredible. And the drinks! Milagro Cafe has a truly amazing bartender in Rebecca who, given her talents with margaritas, would be a renowned mixologist if she were in Manhattan ( although she'd never let anyone call her that.) She creates an amazing array of original margaritas, whether her classic Patron ( my go-to) or one of her seasonal creations ( Pat loved Rebecca's mixed berry margarita, a summer selection)...better than any we've ever had, anywhere. When you add in a warm, professional and attentive staff led by Theresa, who provides service, a smile and smarts with everyone who enters the cafe, you have in Milagro Cafe one of the best reasons to visit the Boro. Stonington's still.got its rustic charms, but in Milagro Cafe it's got spice too!

We tried the chips and salsa and steak tacos and the house margaritas. The chips were homemade toasted tortillas, crisp, brown and salty. There were three salsas. Green, red and tomato pico. Excellent. Tacos were on corn tortillas, well made and seasoned with a dollop of guacamole on top. The service was attentive and friendly. Ambiance is quiet low key. Even in the bar. Highly recommend.

What really made our visit special, though, was the people. The entire staff was amazing - friendly and attentive. The owner, Frank, was phenomenal and said much fun to talk to while Nico, Jackson, Goose and Kyle were all so welcoming. Great food, great people, an incredible atmosphere, and one of the best views you could ask for. Paddy's is everything a beach bar should be. We will absolutely be back!

I was initially disappointed because we were served the drink without a shark in it and that was the whole point of the shark bowl. We asked another bartender if we could get one and he gladly got it, and served it in our drink A few sips in and stirring the drink we noticed that something was floating in the drink. Long story short, It was receipt paper crumpled up. We told the bartender and he really didn't seem to care. He said it must've fallen in when they got more ice. No apology. He did offer to remake the drink, but my friend saw that he was aggravated after his face stated so and decided not to get it remade. Although he was nice enough, I guess to offer a spoon when we asked to fish it out. Since I was on vacation, I had decided to say screw it and order a spicy margarita. I'm not sure what he put in the drink but halfway through, I couldn't even tolerate the rest of it. It was way too strong. I don't know if he was trying to make up for a lost causes but the drink was to worst I've ever had. Another bartender saw that we were upset and gave my wife the rest of a piña colada he was making for somebody else. Although this drink was complementary, we ended up being charged for it. We brought this to the attention to our original bartender. We ended up getting A fixed, but its overall interaction made us not want to come back to Paddy's ever again. Other people did get served by the same bartender and their interactions were completely different. He was smiling, gave the leis and was being friendly. I wish I got his name because I would've complained to the manager. But we just decided to leave and save the rest of our money.

When you're told that there is a Mexican restaurant in the hotel, what comes to mind? A delicious…read moremargarita perhaps? Chips and salsa maybe with some guacamole? Tacos? Fajitas? Enchiladas? You know, the comfort food we've all come to know that the wonderful culture of Mexico has shared with the United States. Don't expect any of these items when you arrive at this restaurant. I hate when chefs take good cuisine and add extra shit to it trying to be fanciful only to make a meal that is unbearable to eat. And unfortunately that's what we experienced tonight along with a restaurant, full of other people who were looking at the food and trying to guess what the hell it was. We started with margaritas, which had nothing to do with a margarita, except for the fact that it had tequila in it. Those were sent back properly and we asked for a regular margarita that wasn't on the menu and they told us. "Oh yes, we can make that." Then we ordered chips and guacamole. The guacamole arrived with pumpkin seeds in it. Never had nor have I ever seen guacamole with pumpkin seeds. It also had passion fruit chopped up in it, making it even odder and Stranger, and not very tasty. We really struggled with what to order for the main course. Nothing that you would normally expect in a Mexican restaurant was on the menu. Yes, they had the names such as tacos and enchiladas, but they had nothing to do with a Taco and absolutely nothing to do with enchilada. Even the quesadilla had nothing to do with the quesadilla. That was the real mystery to us. It appears that they had taken a plate and smeared black beans across the bottom of it. Then they took a blue tortilla shell and added cheese that didn't melt. At first we thought it was square cubes of tofu, as it was also in the tortilla soup. The quesadillas had mushrooms and folded in half and to what we would think is a taco. This was laid on top of the bed of black beans on the plate. Making it extremely messy to eat. The wait staff is used to this. They were bending over backwards and apologizing. They knew the customers did not like this food and it is something they have been dealing with for the past year or so that this restaurant has been opened. We felt really bad for the wait staff because you could see the discomfort in their eyes when they sat a plate down. They knew as the customers would soon come to know, this food sucks. So if you want some delicious Mexican food, you won't find it here. Go somewhere else or up for something else. Hopefully one day, the Mexican chef at this restaurant will forgo his liberal ideas of new and exciting dishes that no one can stand, and get grandma's recipe book out and start fresh. Only then will he have a successful restaurant.

Guacamole featuring pineapple and pumpkin seeds was disappointing. It was normal guacamole with about 10 pumpkin seeds and a tiny bit of pineapple in 3mm chunks on top. Weird that they highlighted the pineapple and pumpkin seeds.

We happened to visit on Tuesday, which meant it was Taco Tuesday - and if they're still running this special, definitely take advantage of it! For $25 per person, you get unlimited tacos. My boyfriend and I decided to give it a try, and we definitely didn't regret it. There were eight different taco options to choose from: scorpion classic, classic chicken, carne asada, al pastor, crispy Baja, adobo shrimp, scorpion chicken, and pork belly. My favorites were easily the crispy Baja and the adobo shrimp. Honestly, for me to pick a fish taco over a steak taco says a lot! The crispy Baja was perfectly crispy and topped with guacamole and cholula cream, which made every bite flavorful, light, and well balanced. If you're someone who enjoys spicy food, the adobo shrimp is a must. It packed more heat than I expected, and I loved every bite. We also shared an order of fries, which came seasoned with taco seasoning and cotija cheese. The fries themselves were hot and crispy, but a little underwhelming with only a sprinkle of cotija cheese. We were not too much of a fan over the taco seasoning on the fries. The drinks were pretty strong, so this is a good spot if you're looking for late-night food and cocktails. On top of that, even though it took a while for the tacos to come out, the service was very friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Overall, the Scorpion Bar's tacos exceeded our expectations. I would definitely recommend visiting for the tacos, especially if the Taco Tuesday event is still available. You'll definitely get your money's worth! -Cris
