Cheese, marvelous cheese!…read more Are you that person with at least five varieties of cheese in your fridge, just in case? Well, I can straight up de-mystify the Stamper Cheese agenda. They are cheese pushers. Like so many artisanal fromage purveyors, their wares suck you in, and you just crave more. Must have fresh mozzarella cheese balls, that is my personal mantra. Twice a week, at either the Federal/Daley/ or Willis Tower Farmers Market, I shuffle up to their booth to score my fix, satiating the gnawing jones of a cheese fiend. The days in between, I try to make it last, stretch it out. Mostly, the fresh mozzarella balls will do. Occasionally, I might venture into a goat cheese gouda, apricot brie, or a nettle infused variety. You know what nettles are? Yeah. They STING you. And apparently, they're good for you too. Only Stamper Cheese would have the cojones to use stinging nettles in their cheese. Get some. It's good. It's a hard cheese variety, and quite tasty. No store front, but they have a Printer's Row Cheese Drop Off. Check their website, Facebook, or better yet, email them for details, since the outdoor Farmers Market season is now over. The winter is that much bleaker without you, Stamper Cheese.

But they gave me tastings of quite a few things, both which I asked for and stuff they suggested to give me a taste. There's a fantastic selection of cheeses of all varieties from various regions. I had to try the one that's the darling of the shop's social media, the Alp Blossom. It's delicious and beautiful. It is fun to eat as well. I realized after I bought it that it's unpasteurized, so although I was looking forward to sharing this with my little one, she's going to have to wait a few more years. My significant other is not much a dan of cheese--until a couple years ago, he'd eat Swiss, Colby, and mozzarella as pizza and that's it. Mimolette and Red Leicester broadened his tastes a bit and then from the ones I got here at C&B--the Alp Blossom, Old Witch, and Honey Bee Goat--he found he liked several more, including a goat cheese (the first time he's ever tried goat cheese). I also got one called Prairie Meadow, which has little crystals in it from the cheese making process, and it's so good. In addition to the fantastic cheese I bought, of which only two are ones I've had before (mimolette and roquefort), I bought some crackers to go with the cheeses. Crackers are crackers, generally, but one of the ones I bought has edible flowers in it, as well as dill. Dill is my favorite herb so that piqued my interest and these crackers are so good. And beautiful and interesting, a great addition to your charcuterie board. I also picked up some crackers with chili in them and they are indeed spicy! The folks at the shop were all really friendly and so helpful. The cheesemonger had a few cheeses he'd already made samples of, and then he gave me a taste of anything I wanted. One of the ones he suggested is one I chose. He pointed me to the "orphan basket" they have in their cooler, which are bits of cheese from what they've sampled, and I got a couple of those to try. They have some really great meats and I picked up some jamon for my partner to try. They also had some chili orange spread that I thought we'd try, since we're big fans of the fig and sour cherry spreads. The one thing I forgot to get, because I didn't want to pull it out of the cooler too early, was the butter they stock! It's a special French one and I was looking forward to it. Another time, I suppose. Parking is on the street only, but it was easy to find. I was worried about that since the West Loop isn't known for its easy parking. Perhaps it was that it was Friday afternoon but it may just be a good spot. It's not too far from Ogilvie Transportation Center, either. I found that the 20 bus, which I sometimes take from work to get to Ogilvie, stops right in front of the shop so that may be my way to get here too. Since most of the cheese shops Chicago had seemed to close up in recent years, it's wonderful to have this great one open up by someone who loves cheese and carries a wonderful mixture for every kind of customer.

Soon as I saw them scraping all that melted cheese over the sandwiches, I already knew I was getting one. I went with the Jambon Cru. Melted raclette scraped over cured ham on toasted baguette with spring onions, baby gherkins, and Dijon. And wow... this thing was a cheesy overload. So much melted cheese, rich, creamy, and warm. The baguette was toasted with that nice crunch, sturdy enough to hold all of it together. Then the gherkins and Dijon came in and cut through all that richness with a little tang and sharpness, which made every bite better. Messy, cheesy, a little ridiculous honestly. The whole market has such a fun vibe too. Busy, lots of people walking around, fresh produce everywhere, live energy all around. The people at the booth were super friendly too. Now I'm seriously about to go to Wisconsin just to find them again.

This is a great place to get stuff you might need like crackers or certain ingredients. You're paying a premium for the convince, so you're not going to do your entire grocery haul here. But when I'm a pinch, it's great. The hidden gem here is the deli counter in the back. You can get bagel breakfast sandwiches (and other sandwiches). They are so good! I get everything bagel with egg, cheese and I toss in a hashbrown. You can add bacon or other proteins. Super solid breakfast sammy. I live closer to the other location on Morgan, but I prefer this one's deli for some reason.
