This is definitely one of those WTF places. As in, you're walking along, and you're like WTF is this place doing here???!! So, I go to the Van Nuys civic center for work and normally if I'm around during lunchtime, I'll just settle for some Quizno's because it's walkable and it's RIGHT THERE. Luckily it's just an occasional thing. But, I always thought, man those poor people at the courthouse are ALREADY on jury duty, and now the ONLY thing they have to eat are Quizno's, a hot dog place, and some Mexican food? Those choices alone would make me lie about a dying relative to get out of jury duty--perjury or not, going to hell or not. But all of a sudden, the Yelp app told me about this place just down the street on Erwin. And of course with my adventurous nature, I had to find it, despite the rain. So here's what's gonna happen. Let's just assume you're on jury duty. You get out for lunch. You're gonna walk towards Van Nuys Blvd where Erwin Street dead ends and wonder, where the eff could this place be?? Then you're gonna go further and pass undesirable automotive shops and parking lots, inching closer to a residential neighborhood. You're gonna wonder, is this one of those Starry Kitchen type places where some random dude is cooking out of his house...and then possibly feels you up after???!! Then you'll stop where Yelp pinpoints the location and wonder, WTF!! Yelp screwed up with the GPS location AGAINNNNN!! Damn you Yelp! Then you're gonna look around and see this random yellow industrial-looking (but nice) building that says "Baked It Myself!, Inc." on it. Then you're gonna go inside and think, do they even serve people on the spot or did I just walk into a catering business? This could be an entire waste of my lunch hour. YOU'VE ARRIVED!! What a pleasant surprise, eh??! And yes, I think they mostly do catering and gift baskets (the packaging was really cool, check 'em out for your next holiday/bday/Valentine's present! I was THIS close to a spontaneous Xmas purchase). However, they also serve the masses for lunch. The kid at the front recommended the grilled marinated chicken sandwich or the brie and pear sandwich, but he said all the sandwiches were good. The kid works there so he has to know what he's talking about, so I tried the chicken sandwich. And I LOVED it!! The slab of mozzarella alone was 4 stars! A very fresh sandwich. Also, every sandwich comes with some nice grilled veggies, hummus, pitas, and a little cookie. And lemme tell ya, their hummus is crazy good!! Really nicely salted/flavored. I KNOW I love a sandwich when I force myself to save half for the next day because I'm trying to draw out my pleasure. Pricing is all pretty reasonable too. Oh, and what pushed it over the top into a 5-star place for me? Aside from being a WTF gem in the rough for lunch, the damn side of fresh fruit that I ordered killed it! Normally they pack that with useless canteloupe or melons or old pineapples, but this one...THIS ONE...had big chunks of watermelon, purple grapes, and tons of RASPBERRIES. Could they have chosen any better a combination of fruits?? My gah, they just GET me. If man-restaurant love was legal, I tell ya. Or is it? Wow, could I get any more dramatic about fruit? The location will throw you off, but the inside is cozy and clean and the food is definitely worth your time and money for those jurors with the most discerning of palates. Came across this place after looking for a sandwich place in the area. I drove past it, since the building is unmarked, asides from the very small lettering above the door. I decided to go with the roast beef sandwich, which started off with a small serving of hummus and fresh pita chips, which were great! As my sandwich arrived, it was nicely sized, and accompanied by some grilled veggies. Asides from the overpowering horseradish, the roast beef was very tasty and just enough to leave me feeling satisfied. As you feel proud of yourself for having such a healthy meal, they bring you a cookie to throw you off. I've been here twice now, and both times I was impressed. The first time I came, it was 2:30pm on a weekday, and it was very quiet. I got the roast beef sandwich, which comes with roasted vegetables and a cookie dessert. The sandwich was nicely proportioned, with real cuts of beef and a creamy horseradish that I fell in love with. My lunch companion and I actually sat and chatted with the owner for a bit, and she upgraded our cookie to a full dessert plate, with 6 kinds of deliciousness. The second time I came, it was 12:30pm, and a bit busier, but not cramped. We sat at a table outside, and I ordered the Moroccan Beef Salad (without feta). The salad was substantial, and the dressing was interesting and well spiced. We did not get the full dessert plate, but the cookies are indeed good enough for my companions to argue over who would get the little bits that broke off. All in all, I have to say that for those who are in the area, and who would rather eat REAL food, that this place is a must-try. read more

This is probably just an isolated incident. So I read all the great reviews on yelp which is typically spot on. I gave this place a visit before the rush got there, I was actually the only one in the place at the time other than a takeout. I ordered the chicken curry salad sandwich with grilled veggies. The bread was great and that was about it. The curry chicken salad did not have any walnuts, onions, or cranberries. It tasted as though they just ran out of curry but had plenty of mayonnaise and celery because that was all that this sandwich had. I brought this up to the girl there, who was very nice, and she informed me that it was all in the mix. Unless it was pureed, it was not in there. The grilled vegetables were indeed grilled and tasted good but they were fresh out of the fridge cold. If this is what they were going for then fine, like I said they tasted fine but when I order grilled veggies it is because I would like them warm. For 9.50, with no drink, I was quite disappointed. I over heard another table received an messed up order as well. I might give this place another try but not any time soon. read more

Love this place!!! I have worked across the street for 3 years and I am so upset that it has taken me so long to discover this little lunch spot (but it is sort of hidden in its current location). The food is as gourmet as you can get in Van Nuys and tastes amazing. The owner is a really sweet lady who also does catering. I have had the BLT sandwich and the pesto chicken sandwich which I requested be placed on a tortilla rather than artisan bread. I also have had the mixed green and chicken salad. All of these dishes were 5 star. The salad came with a raspberry vinaigrette which I normally would never try, but it tasted great. The ambiance inside is also very nice. Its a small space but is decorated very nicely with a great light fixture hanging from the high ceiling. I will be back with my co workers for sure. read more

A little funky place that is hard to find when you initially pull up. Once you walk in there are a few tables and you can see into the kitchen. Its a small space but the menu has a wide wide variety of interesting sandwiches, salads and baked goods. I had the roast beef sandwich and my friend had the brie and pear. Both of our sandwiches were awesome with great flavors. The service was also very friendly. I have also had the brownies, cookies and other baked goods with them and everytime they have been fantastic. If you are near the courthouse this is by far the best eatery there. read more

They open for the regular public as a way to be a little better known and make some more money. Think of this as a Rachael Ray special find. When in need of help, use Yelp! With the help of Yelp, again, I was able to find the perfect place to eat for lunch. I was getting hungry and it was getting close to lunch time but I wasn't in the mood for anything in particular. So I searched lunch places on Yelp and it suggested Baked It Myself! and decided to give it a go. I had read it was hard to find so I kept my eyes open while driving down the street for it. This place is located in a neutral colored building that is located between an open parking lot and the corner martial arts place. Seating -- there is not much space inside of the restaurant but it is not overly crowded inside either. There is enough space to seat about 15 - 20 (maybe). Now let's get to the FOOOOD! First off, the sandwiches are amazing! The bread is good, the veggies are good, and everything is delicious. I ordered the grilled chicken pesto sandwich and my friend ordered the roast beef sandwich. Both were so good we traded each other half of our sandwiches! To top off how good the sandwiches are, they give you a complimentary cookie! You can choose from a milk chocolate, white chocolate, oatmeal and a couple other cookie choices. If you are feeling like a tasty sandwich, look no farther and give this place a shot! read more

What a great surprise! After the usual two hour frustration of the Building Department, I called them while I was about 5 mins away. The first sandwich on the menu sounded good enough so i went with it. Showed up at the place and was immediately surprised at the cleanliness and upscale feel of the little sitting area. The women working there couldn't have been friendlier (or more beautiful!) than if they owned the place (which maybe they did). My chicken with pesto panini was fantastic! Plus, it included a side salad and if you inquire about the fresh baked cookies with a smile on your face you might find one in the bottom of your bag like I did (chocolate chunk, my favorite)! Great place, the food was really nice quality and felt healthy along with tasting great. I usually don't go for meatloaf but their turkey meatloaf special was pretty tasty. The free cookie with every order is a really nice touch, home baked deliciousness! Tried the snickerdoodle and the oatmeal raisin cookies, oatmeal won hands down but both were great. According to the owner Cheryl, they just started delivering in the area as long as they have the staff available at the time you call. I'll be ordering again for sure! read more

This is the first yelp review I've ever written, but I just had to for this place! I was feeling very lazy today and didnt feel like going to pick up food anywhere. I wanted something healthy, but wanted something delivered. I stumbled upon Baked It Myself, Inc. on yelp delivery restaurants, and I am SO glad I did! First of all, the woman on the other end of the phone was very polite and helpful. They gave me a time frame of 20 minutes for my order to be at my house. Literally 16 min later, my phone rang and they were at my front door. So fast. The delivery man (wish I had their names) was very nice and smiley. I was sooo impressed with the food. I had the grilled chicken sandwich, pita and hummus and of course the complimentary cookie. I ate the whole sandwich so fast, it was so good! I was so satisfied with my healthy meal. Super cute decor! The customer service is really great! I could not find the menu online, called in to inquire about the menu and they text me a picture of the menu to my phone. I ordered the chicken sandwich with mozzarella and pesto, it was deilicious! The side salad was super delicious, I will be ordering a salad next time I come. Hands down the best place in the area. A little off the beaten path, but well worth looking for. Great healthy choices, everything freshly prepared and beautifully served. The owner and staff are friendly and welcoming. The daily specials add a wonderful variety, the soup of the day with sandwich and salad on Tuesday a great deal. this little catering business slash cafe rocks! it'd be a great lunch spot in any city, but it's extra super duper awesome because it's located in van nuys, where vegetarian lunches mean a quesadilla, fried rice, or if you care about your health- a veggie delite. they offer sandwiches, salads, and daily specials (like vegetarian chili!) for $9 each. the portions are filling, and you get a side of grilled veggies and your choice of cookie with each meal. the cookies are awesome of course, as are the sandwiches and salads. there are plenty of vegetarian options and the ingredients are always fresh and good quality. the dressings are all house-made. the business is a little hard to spot cus it doesn't really look like a cafe from the outside and there's no noticeable signage- just a sandwich board outside. the interior is contemporary, light and airy- very ikea cafeteria-ish. i've never had a problem eating at a table, but i usually just opt for take-out. they also deliver locally. as an added bonus, the staff is always helpful and friendly- like throw in an extra cookie for the hell of it, kind of friendly. read more

It is in a somewhat commercial area, probably because the owner runs her catering business out of the same location, I believe. So you have to look for it. Here's the story that makes me love this place: I live in Texas and my sister lives in Sylmar, CA. My sister had her first baby a month early and I couldn't make it in time for the birth so I wanted to send her something special. After reading the great reviews on Yelp, I called 'Baked It Myself". Donna was so helpful and even offered to make a shopping trip for me to get my sister some baby items! We settled on a homemade sweets basket and it was delivered to the hospital within a few hours. This is an interesting little place on a side street near the Van Nuys Courthouse. It's primarily a catering company but they open for lunch from 11:00 to 2:00 Monday through Friday with seating for about 16-20 people. I've been there twice at the tail end of lunch service and have always gotten a table but I think it's busier in prime time. They have a menu of salads and sandwiches all of which are $9. They always have a daily special on the chalkboard for an amazing $5! One day the special was a substantial bowl of good looking beef chili. You get a complimentary basket of toasted pita bread with hummus and a free dessert. I've had good cupcakes and an incredible brownie so far. The roast beef sandwich served on a ciabatta roll with caramelized onions and horseradish is delicious as was the grilled chicken breast sandwich.
