Order and pay at the counter, bring your number to a table and wait for a runner to bring your food. The interior is clean, spare and roomy, but with the cold-ish feel of a market that's had tables added rather than a true "restaurant." Chains like Joan's On 3rd or Le Pain Quotidien are the models, repeated by privately owned places like Claudine in Encino or Pascal in Canoga Park (probably the best of the lot). They're all convenient, family-friendly, good for groups, and often disappointing. We dropped in for Sunday breakfast and were greeted by a gregarious guy at the counter who felt the need to call me "buddy," despite the fact that I'm neither a feisty terrier or a 4-year old holding a toy dinosaur. We placed our order and found a table, and our drinks were quickly brought to us. My wife set about fixing her coffee the way she likes it (using wood stirrers because no spoon was brought), and I had to go back to the counter to request napkins. Did I mention that the pay portal at the counter suggested a 20% or 25% tip despite the fact that we were going to get very little service? Anyhoo... My wife ordered the Cheese Quiche, which is an individual pie rather than a slice, and tasted quite good: cheesey and eggy, with a flaky crust ringing the entire pie. It is served by itself, but would benefit from a side salad with a vinaigrette to cut the richness -- and that plating would be more visually appealing as well. I ordered the Breakfast Sammie (cute name; just perfect for a Buddy). This was a Swiss Cheese Omelet on a griddled Croissant with their signature Sweet & Spicy Bacon plus a Tomato Jam that I chose to delete. The sandwich was generously portioned, and looked quite good, though the texture of the croissant screamed "commercial bakery delivery" rather than anything made in-house. The eggs were fresh and properly prepared, the Swiss had a good bite, and the bacon was appealingly sweet (I didn't detect any real spice). A small side of hash browns were nicely crisped and had good flavor. Overall, the sandwich was fine, but I would have enjoyed it more on a better quality croissant or almost any other house-baked bread. And so, this was a completely serviceable breakfast, but nothing to write home about or race back to. I'd rather head to Pascal, where they have a much larger menu, and the baked goods are truly excellent.
