I am beyond disappointed and frustrated by the entire process of ordering a cake for my son's 2nd birthday. I went in person to order him a basketball themed sheet cake. I brought the decorations and even met with Joe Murphy himself. Joe took down my order, sketched the design of the cake, reviewed the colors, and theme personally. The theme of the party was born 2 ball and I asked for a basketball themed sheet cake with orange and green frosting. First the frosting was pastel pink/orange (see photos) and sea foam green. Clearly nothing like the colors discussed - then the drawing he created was supposed to have the ball decorations cascading down the side. As you can see in the photo it looks like my 2 year old son haphazardly placed them with absolutely no care of design whatsoever. On top of the above disgraceful items when I called I was assured I would be contacted to rectify and discuss that they gave my husband at pick up a cake with THE WRONG COLORS, NO DESIGN, AND DOUBLE THE SIZE ORDERED. I was never called back, there was zero respect or apologies. When I called the girl even said "oh the basketball theme cake" - please take a look and let me know, do you see a basketball theme cake or any care taken at all? Just had a birthday party with a Blackout cake, which was excellent. A chocolate layer cake that is moist and full of deep chocolate flavor that is somehow balanced. I mean that it is chocolate cake, with a chocolate ganache, with dark chocolate icing with chocolate crunchies on top, but it's not chocolate overload. The chocolate flavor is deep but with no bitterness. It's one of the best chocolate cakes I've ever had. Looking forward to trying something else there. read more

Heard amazing things about this place and have been meaning to check it out for awhile. Finally had a chance to stop by today and I am so glad I finally tried it!! We got a number of things to try, including cheese danish, raspberry cheese danish, maple bacon croissant, ginger snap cookie, and of course, the signature blackout chocolate cake. Every time I'm in the area I stop by! The bakery has a great variety of pastries, both savory and sweet. You can tell they're baked fresh and they're always delicious! My favorite are the croissants that are so light and flaky! Of course the Brooklyn black out cake is also a must try, it beat Bobby Flay on his Food Network show! Just an excellent bakery in every possible respect. The cookies are large and crunchy as well as chewy. The blackout cake is too rich to be believed. Well...this is hands down the BEST BlackOut cake you will ever have the pleasure to devour. I am 72 and have been a fan of Brooklyn BlackOut cake since I was a kid and have tried many. Most are misses. This one is flawless. The texture of the cake as well as the filling, icing and crumb are all excellent and actually light (for a BlackOut cake) and each bite makes me feel like a kid again. The cheesecake is light and decadent. The Blackout cake is something you just don't shove in to your face & swallow but something to swirl inside your mouth and savor the chocolatey goodness. Tried a few of the sweets here - awesome flavor! I brought my kids, who have the same refined palete that I do, so we of course gravitated first to cookies. The chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin were both delicious - very large and thin, but perfectly cooked and not crunchy. Next, we dabbled in some macaroons, chocolate and raspberry (or brown and pink, per the kids). Based on the quickness of consumption, I can only assume these were equally tasty. Lastly, I grabbed mini cheesecakes and coffee cake for my wife and I to enjoy that night. The cheesecakes were a BIG hit. Perfectly cooked, more on the cream cheese side than ricotta, making it a perfect late night sweet treat. The coffee cake was pretty dense, so for those who prefer that, you'll be thrilled. High quality baked goods and service at this gem of a bakery in New Providence and now Madison. We've previously tried the Brooklyn blackout cake, coffee cake and croissants. All were fresh and tasty. We recently tried their cheesecake which was decadent yet light. No fruit toppings so we added fresh berries from the local market and it was a hit. The prices are fair for what you get and it gets crowded during the usual busy times. The store is bright and clean with helpful staff. So happy they got rid of the annoying tip suggestion thingy when using credit cards. Two thumbs way up! read more

I had some time in New Providence, so I searched coffee places and this place came up. Upon entering the building, it is very clean. The cakes and pastries all looked great. I was mainly there for coffee but had to try something. I had a hard time deciding but chose the blondie. The blondie was so moist and nice size. I ordered coffee. They put the cream in and we put the sugar. I asked for light and it was kinda light but no complaints. It was very strong. The staff was very friendly and not pushy. I saw the owner in the back and he would put wording on cakes from the display for customers. I like to try local establishments not chains. There was a chain across the street. I will definitely be back and recommend this place for cakes, pastries and coffee. read more

Long-time needed in this sleepy town: a little pearl amidst gray gravel - a bakery! Ample parking in front of store, big window - filtering natural light into a fresh space inside. There's a few tables to sit at and enjoy a pastry. Have a coffee elsewhere - although they have the equipment, they are not baristas. It's good to be good at one thing, and baking happens to be their shtick. I will admit, I haven't tasted majority of their baked goods. I rely on the taste and reviews of the husband, as I'm gf. Sometimes I slip a few bites of their heavenly brownie (highly recommend!), but I tend to stick to the raspberry macarons - they are soft and gooey and delicious. (6 pcs, $20) If you're doing a taste box (recommended), you'll spend about $40-50. The place is clean, well lit, open kitchen in back where you can peek in to see what the next batch of cookies and cakes are being mixed and baked, and sometimes you'll even run into Joe himself. I understand a bakery not wanting to get into GF products because of contamination and true Celiac and allergy issues. However, I think it would have been nice to have gf options and let customers decide if it's something they can consume or not. There are plenty of people who have non celiac gluten intolerance who would like to enjoy freshly baked goods. Maybe also working together with a Local Celiac kitchen/bakery to offer wrapped baked goods? Just an idea. read more

Nice addition to NP! Last time we had anything remotely close was back in the day when Wayne's Bakery existed. While I haven't tried everything, the go to items for me are the strawberry shortbread cake, coffee cake and raspberry rolled croissant (it's actually called something else but I forgot). My waistline & wallet are taking a beating from top shelf bakery products which have become available in the area in recent years. Joe's cookies are the best. . Their scones are excellent - 2nd only to Able & has the best in-house coffee in Maplewood, which is the most charming town in the area, but a bit too far for a typical morning treat. Croissants here are terrific - only Fleur de Sel in Chatham can compete, which also seems to do quality macarons (but they aren't my thing :) Raisin danish are my thing & l lean towards the ones at Bake in Summit, which also does my style of breads - fresher than the selection at King's.
