I'm a donut guy and love them here. Simple glazed or a nice Boston Cream. I don't need the gluten free or vegan options they offer but I love that they are available for those who do. This local bakery offers beautiful, tasty traditional pastries, doughnuts, cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. The special orders come out delicious and perfectly decorated. There are always vegan options, as well, which taste just as delicious as the traditionally baked goods. Benji and his staff, though, are the true highlight of this business! We stopped in at the recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. It has the feel of a bakery I grew up with in Springfield before they became commercialized. I've tried other bakeries vegan options and they always been disappointing that is not the case here. I got a mix of cookies and doughnuts and we shared them and they were all absolutely delicious. I shed more than a few tears when Bill told me that Evans Bakery would no longer be a fixture in Old North Dayton. I will miss his dinner rolls and strawberry cream cake the most. However, I will miss Bill's baking classes and professional baking wisdom more than the sweets. Kudos to Jennifer Evans for taking on the business and making people happy for sooo many years! I wish her all the best. And best wishes to Bill, whose servant leadership and passion for helping people led to the creation of some of the most successful nonprofits in the Dayton area. Small mom and pop shop. Parking can be a little challenging. Otherwise, the bakery has a little of everything, all of which looked very traditional. The staff was very accommodating, even offering to make a blackberry filled donut on the spot. (Thus it is no Dunkin' Donuts, thankfully. ) My first bite was like being transported back to grandma's kitchen. Definitely with the stop. Why not 5 stars, if the fillings were homemade this place would be a wonder of the world. read more

I love Evans Bakery because of their wonderful pastries and especially the palm leaves. But also because Jennifer Evans and her dad have been helping us every year with the Jewish Cultural Festival. Volunteers do the work but the Evans family allows us to use their facility for making and baking hamentaschen, honey cake, and challah. They are great. Thank you, Jennifer! read more

I adore this bakery. Not only are the donuts THE BEST I have ever tasted, but the bakery itself is wonderful. My mother ordered pies and I do not like pie. HOWEVER I LOVED the sweet potato pie. It's the absolute BEST. Next bread. Again, my mom decided she wanted Milk bread. Never heard of it? Me neither. I go to Jennifer, the owner, and she just whips out the recipe. Not only that, she asked for feedback to make it better (it was perfect the way it was). Then today as I get my donuts, I see bread samples. It's her newest bread to try. It was HEAVENLY. And lastly, I bought donuts once and they did not taste like normal. So I call the shop and Jennifer answers. I talk with her and told her I didn't really like what was done. No problem. She let me know she was stretching mix til her new shipment and that her donuts would not change. THEN she said she would give me a free dozen since I wasn't happy. I forgot about the free but I remembered the mix part. Next time I'm there I made the inquiry if the mix was the same. Jennifer REMEMBERED and gave me a free dozen donuts. BEST PLACE EVER! read more

Just moved to Dayton and was looking for a bakery offering good bread. Stopped in here and am very happy - there wasn't a great selection at about noon on a Tuesday, but the owner offered me a wheat sandwich loaf or an herb ciabatta, and she explained that she has bread in the freezer and can also bake to order if I call ahead. The ciabatta was absolutely delicious! Didn't try the sweets, but they look amazing. I'll be back for sure! read more

Pretty disappointed with the cupcakes we ordered for my bridal shower. We just asked for simple vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with white icing. The icing was minimal and looked extremely homemade, in a bad way. Each one also had a dent in it like something was placed on top then removed and not corrected. Everyone who walked into the party asked if we made them because the icing looked like someone who would do it at home, not a professional baker. I did not try the cupcake but was also told the cake itself was not very good either, a bit too dry. The only reason I didn't say anything when they were picked up was because my mom had ordered them and I wasn't sure what the instructions were. Plus there wouldn't be time to make another batch before the shower began. Our family will not be returning and we won't be recommending this bakery to anyone. read more

I can't believe more people haven't reviewed this local staple! Every time I'm on the North side of Dayton, I stop by this bakery shop for their kolachi. (Look more like kiffles, but hey!) I ordered a loaf of Salt Rising Bread on April 28, 2019 and picked it up the next day. We were deeply disappointed as this was not real Salt Rising Bread as we know it. It was simply "heavy" white bread and lacked the pungent smell that old fashioned and traditional Salt Rising Bread has. We used to live in Cleveland many years ago and frequented Hough Bakery (not defunct) and every week purchased their wonderful Salt Rising Bread. It was "real " Salt Rising Bread and had "the smell." What we purchased at Bill Evans Bakery was not the real thing. I will to into the bakery in a few days and talk with the baker in the hopes that this was simply an anomaly and that he or she really does know how to make the real stuff. Rudest cooks ever! I wish Yelp allowed zero star reviews. I always loved these donuts when they had a stand set up at the farmers market, but since then they're quality of product and service has fallen big time! My husband was on his way to buy a couple dozen early in the morning when an employee called my home, because I had left a message the evening before asking a couple questions. I just sent my son up to Evans Bakery to get a birthday cake for a 50 year old man. He told the employee that the cake was for a man and did not want the one in the case with roses on it. They went to the back to personalize the cake and when they came out they had wrote on another cake with roses on it. It's hideous. I called the bakery and they weren't willing to do anything about it. My first and last experience with this business. There are a lot of local bakeries that do a fantastic job and they will get my money in the future. read more

Love this place. For awhile I declared Pastry Friday and went there at least once week for the glazed donuts and the lemon filled (swoon). Not a good diet choice so I'm there less frequently, but this is my first go-to for anything baked. Extraordinary community members; you'd be hard-pressed to find nicer folks. I used to go to Evans Bakery on a regular basis. I came in there this morning. I was kind of saddened by the size of the donuts that they have now. They are about half the size as they used to be. On the icing side of things, they hardly had much icing on the donuts. For the cost of a dozen is $9 in change, I'm a a little upset for the quality versus how much they cost. I can think of several other places including United Dairy Farmers whose Donuts seems to be better these days. Very saddened to see this. They were once wonderful now not so much. read more

The Evans's daughter and her partner just recently re-opened the Evans Bakery and everything we have bought there has been delicious! My girlfriend and her father have both said the creamhorns are the best they have ever tasted! They baked me a birthday cake for my 13 year old grandaughter and it was just as beautiful as it was delicious! I work very close to the bakery and I stop by almost daily to get something for the next days breakfast. So glad this is open. Great donuts, super cheap, and really friendly people. Not far at all for anyone in South Park, Oregon, St Anne's, or downtown (just go down keowee toward Children's), which is great since there really is a lack of a locally owned, good bakery in those neighborhoods. I have ordered cakes from Evans every year for my twins birthday, 13 years now and except for last year when they closed. I just learned tonight that they reopened and I can't wait to call them tomorrow and order a cake. They have the best marble buttercream cakes in the world. Not too sweet and just right!!!
