After being tremendously unhappy with several bagel places recently we decided to stop here today. We were pleasantly surprised. I read the reviews on yelp first and choose to believe they were mixed and old. The place was clean and small but not cluttered the staff used new gloves and removed them when handling money. They were not overly friendly but were very pleasant. The food was great. The bagels were light and airy. We both had sausage egg and cheese and we're both happy with our sandwiches. My classmates had decided to order from this spot over the phone. When we called and placed our orders, the employee was so RUDE !!! She kept asking is that it? Are you finished yet? Are you done? He was greeted by name, no problem there. Then another customer ordered a variety of bagels & an egg white sandwich also greeted by name again no big deal. But when they receive their food and are out the door and my food is still on the griddle and all I get is a shrug and "she forgot" when I asked what happened. Well that's enough for me, I handed my coffee back & asked for my money which they did refund. Treat everyone the same, my money is as good as next guy! Customer service means a lot! Just not at BAKIN BAGELS! Well after a year away I decided to give this place another try. BIG MISTAKE!! I ordered a Taylor ham, egg & cheese with a hash brown on top. Bakin calls it a ("hobo") that said everything started ok. Placed my order received my coffee and watched as the grill man screw up my sandwich. He cracks the egg on the grill and slaps down the Taylor ham. After over cooking my egg and Taylor ham he realizes he hadn't put the hash brown on. His solution was to put one on the grill and use a press on each side for 30 seconds per side!! After I protested about it and the grill guy argues with me he removed it. All the while the 3 other guys behind the counter sat silent no apologizes! I even had to ask for a refund on the difference in price! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I don't understand why this place has such a low rating. I grew up in Maywood and whenever I visit my parents, I always grab a bagel from here. The bagels are always fresh out of the oven and still warm and fluffy when you eat it. I always thought this place offers 'normal' bagels until I had bagels everywhere else. This place has set my bagel standards and I rarely find bagel places that is comparable or even top this place. In regards to the gloves, I don't have any problems. This bagel shop is below average. Anyone that disagrees with me is fine. Just my opinion and if management reads this, they should react. First all hygiene is a huge part if not first and foremost the most important thing about rating the quality of a food establishment. People handling money should not be the ones preparing food. It's just disgusting and unsanitary. I must say not all the people there have good hygienic practices. It's hit or miss. The cleanliness of the place overall needs a good scrubbing or refreshing. They have drink overstock everywhere. Everything is cluttered and unorganized. The place need some good management rehual. Second, service. It's hit or miss. Woman there with the few dozen earrings is the rudest and least hygienic btw. If I see her working I do a 180 and beat it. There's another woman there. Bit older looking, she is up or down. Very inconsistent. Not sure if it's PMS or she just hates her job but you never know what you get. She absolutely pissed me off last time I was there when a friend of hers came in and totally cut the line. Not cool. Third, on the food. The bagels are good but overpriced compared to other shops in area. Other shops in area down fall is that they are extremely busy, this shop is very lucky that the other shops are extremely busy so that customers come here to avoid lines. Everything bagel has bit too much salt and need to be wiped off. And the owner should invest in a toaster because they do not toast. Other reviewers said that bagels come out oven hot and fresh. This is in the center of town and so close. I'm surprised I waited so long to try this spot. Would have given it five stars but the staff didn't seem that friendly. If you like bagels, this place is great. If you like bagel-based sandwiches or bagel-like products, it might not be the place for you, judging by other reviews. I don't know about their sandwiches or toasting methods since I like my bagels untoasted and plain (or sometimes a little bit of butter, but usually plain) But if you DO like bagels, they have the best bagels in Bergen County (and better than any of the bagels I've tried in NYC). The outside of the bagel is the perfect level of crispy (I hate bagels that hurt the roof of your mouth to eat) and the inside is chewy, soft, and tears apart in cotton candy-like wisps. Now, some comments on other reviews: A dollar a piece for a bagel is not a bad deal, how many bagels are you eating in one sitting? Do not bother calling in your order, because if there is a line of 10 people they expect you to wait for every one of them to order and receive their food before you do.
