I have big bushy eyebrows and I need someone who really knows how to SHAPE them. There is really only one place in the area that I found that shapes them and they charge double what Sasha does. I struggled to find a go-to haircut place for years, and I've been coming here for over half of a decade. That says a lot. I work in a conservative environment where everyone is pretty put-together, and the people at Balance cut my hair exactly the way that I need to look professional. It doesn't hurt that Balance is such a fun environment. Think: glam rock black barber shop (from outer space). This place has a big personality. I just visited the mothership in their new location. Carla is wonderful... in between coloring and cutting my hair she entertained various notable creatives and characters while making me a cup of tea. She is on my daughters emergency pickup list for school just around the corner. Balance is definitely my go-to salon in Jersey City. I've been going to Balance since it was originally on Erie St. Their new location makes it convenient for anyone in the neighborhood to walk down to Newark and get a cut/color. Love that Carla (shop owner) continues to promote local art and uses the salon as a gallery, changing artists every now and then. I know I can count on Balance to be fun-loving and homey, offering me a glass of water or wine ;) Sasha is my girl! I've been going to her for cuts and more recently for touch-up coloring. She is a hair goddess! I am someone always willing to try new things and Sasha knows how to spice it up yet keep it beautiful. If you go and have Sasha as your stylist she won't disappoint you. Can't wait for my next visit we're gonna color it up! Pricing is standard for the area $60-80 for a female cut -- with shampoo and blow out. Same goes for coloring. They are the absolute BEST!!! No matter what kind of cut you're looking for, they will knock it out of the park! I've gotten both cuts and color here, and so has my VERY picky mother, and they took her color from fully grey to the strawberry blonde that she was when she was 20. I have been going to a specialty salon in the city for the past few years but have been wanting a salon in my neighborhood. The convenience of being on my street and curiosity of their unique decor made me give them a call. Spoke with Carla on phone and she basically gave me a consultation. Went in, still worried and she handed me over to Hannah who I immediately fell in love with. They were genuine in their concern for what I wanted for my hair and didn't push extras. Dave rinsed out my color and made such an effort to clean off the extra dye on my forehead. ( I have gone home from expensive salons with dye and nothing pisses me off more). Between their awesome sense of humor, lack of pretension and genuine attitudes I can honestly say I love this crew and will return! Even better: my color looks stupid awesome and they were beyond reasonably priced for this hood. I loved it so much I hugged Hannah... And I don't hug people! Been sleeping on this review since I have a toddler at home but had to find the time to do it. It's been a couple weeks now, since my first haircut with Alicia and it's truly become one of my favorite cuts ever...! I requested a "female mullet" cause I've been bored with seeing what's trending these days with everyone's basic and safe do's....I showed her photos on my phone for some inspo and she really stayed true to what I wanted without it looking too dated- think "florence nightingale meets joan jett"... It's different, fresh and yet feminine and super edgy at the same time. The stylist was really great with communicating - making sure the length and the sides were the right fullness and ok with me, as opposed to some people that just take the scissors and just chop chop chop away until you want to cry. With a nice cup of iced coffee, a lot of beautiful and trippy artwork and furniture to look at, and good music to listen to...This is my go to spot now... read more

Balance saved my hair- not joking. Went in with a terrible cut that I'd gotten earlier in the day from a different salon and left with the exact haircut I wanted. I saw Hannah (I THINK- tall, young, black hair) and she was super kind to me, specifically about how I rushed in all flustered after nearly crying over the hair cut from earlier. She not only gave me a gorgeous pixie AND thinned out my super thick hair so that it looked nice- not like a fluffy bowl on my head, but she also took the time to show me how to style it and such.
