My partner booked a spa day for my birthday that included a water flotation, massage and a mini facial. Unfortunately, the experience started off on the wrong foot. While I was already in an Uber on the way to my early morning appointment, the spa called my partner to say their water system had burst and the flotation service could not be done, which meant my appointment would be pushed back by an hour and 15 minutes. Since I wasn't going to wait that long, I turned around and went home. A few minutes later they called again saying they could take me only 15 minutes after my original time, which was confusing considering the earlier issue, and unfortunately it no longer worked with my schedule. I ended up keeping the massage and facial appointment later that day. When I arrived, I had to wait behind another client whose check-out went well into my appointment time. On top of that, I was told my service wasn't scheduled as a prenatal massage, so they needed additional time to change the room. My partner specifically booked a prenatal package over the phone, so this was another unexpected delay. Once I was in the room, my therapist Erica was very kind and welcoming. She explained how the prenatal massage would work, starting face up and then moving to my side later. The massage itself was fine, but the facial was disappointing. It was essentially just a face wash and warm towel. I've had quick 30-minute facials before and they typically include at least some pore extractions or a face mask but that was not the case here. During the massage, I was told I would eventually move to my side due to the prenatal positioning, but that never happened, likely because we ran out of time due to the earlier delays. It would have been helpful if that had been explained. At the end, I was offered water in a cup (tap water I assume) rather than a bottle, which felt a bit unusual for a spa experience. I also had to ask for tea, while it had been automatically offered to my sister who finished her service earlier. Overall, the staff was polite and kind, but the experience felt disorganized from start to finish. For nearly $400 for two services plus tip, it unfortunately did not feel worth the cost. read more

Came for my first facial in a long time. The spa is very serene, with soft lighting and music. My appointment was with Laila and she started the session with what to expect. The facial included some neck and arm massage as well as in depth care on your face. All the products used had a very gentle smell (more herbal than perfume) and felt very high quality. It was so relaxing I could have fallen asleep! At the end of the session, we went over skin concerns (thankfully not many). Had a great massage experience with Balans! I booked through Classpass (32 credits) for the head, neck and shoulders massage. It's easy to find on Newbury St. When you walk in, you take off your shoes and take slippers before heading up to check in. I thought that was really nice, I appreciated the coat rack too. The space is beautiful with soothing music and dim lighting. We started right on time and Cristina did a lovely job! She's very sweet, kind and nurturing. It was easy to leave a tip via venmo and they offered a discount if you rebook that day with them. I'd come back and recommend to anyone looking for some self care. read more

Worst spa experience I have ever had, I left feeling like I needed another spa. I will no longer be recommending this place to anyone else!! I Booked and pre paid for a 75 minute facial it was less than 60 minutes long. She didn't do the facial properly. She judged my skin and criticized me the whole time. I'm all for opinions on how to make my skin better but judgment and criticism the entire session is different. I'm used to comments about making my skin better I've had a facial a few times a year for the last five years. This spa experience was different comments like "why is your skin like this?" "so are you going to start eating better?" "You need to not stress" were made repeatedly during the whole appointment. When I was finished with my shortened facial I raised concern that it was short with the receptionist. The receptionist noticed the time and agreed with me that it was too short; however, nothing was done. The person who did my facial then came out to talk to me to try and convince me she took me earlier. I asked her to ease off the conversation because I didn't want to see her again but she followed me and continued talking. The manager phoned me the next day saying the reason why it was ended early is cause the person who did my facial said my skin was red and she didn't want to irritate it. HAHAAH. Huge joke. So first it was "she took me early" to "my skin was red" which I was never told. She asked me how I was doing during the facial and I said fine. My skin is used to facials as I go so often. This was a sad excuse to 'we messed up and trying to cover'. They offered me a free 30 min mini facial which makes no sense because if my skin was sooo red and irritated then why try to give me another facial to irritate it more?! Hahaha huge joke. I'm not making a drive into Boston for a 30 mini facial, which will probably last 15 minutes, absolutely not. I should have paid for a 60 min facial like I got. Lastly, my fiancé wrote a review and they commented on it basically saying what he said was inaccurate but that's farthest from the truth. They will most likely comment on this saying negative classic customer service words to cover them but if you go here don't expect nothing less. My girlfriend ordered me a massage and herself a facial from this place and it was an awful experience. She called to book an appointment and the lady at the front desk said she was too new to know how to do that and told my girlfriend to book online. My girlfriend then booked the appointment online and there was an issue where the date of one of the services (just one not both) was moved to a random date in the future. My girlfriend then called the spa to have them correct the one with the bad date, the same employee answered saying she didn't know how to do that, told my girlfriend to book another appointment and that she would talk with the manager about cancelling the system messed up one. A few weeks later, after our appointments, they still hadn't cancelled and refunded the one they system messed up and the manger argued it was cause online booked appointments are non-refundable. This was despite the fact that their system messed up the date, her employee said it would be canceled cause she didn't know how to move it, and to book a new one instead of waiting for it to be moved. Then my girlfriend booked a 75 minute facial, and an add on that was 10-15 minutes. Despite this her appointment was done in less than an hour, the woman who did it left the facemask she ordered on less than 5 minutes and harassed her when she complained to the front desk going as far as following her from room to room after my girlfriend asked to be left alone. The manager then took the side of the person doing the facial and blamed the whole thing on my girlfriend. This place will not give you what you paid for and will harass you about it. Go anywhere else. Edit to add an update: After posting a review on Google, the manager of the spa, despite having my number that I had to provide to get the massage (they text me this morning asking for a review so I can prove they have it), called my girlfriend to harass her over this review to try and get me to take it down. Despite the technician following my girlfriend after her facial claiming she got the whole time and my girlfriend just couldn't tell time properly, the manager is now claiming that the technician stopped the facial after 60 minutes due to my girlfriends face being "too irritated". This is a clear lie to cover the business as my girlfriend was asked how she was doing and how her face was feeling during the facial and she said she and her face were feeling great. The manager is claiming she isn't taking sides but is agreeing with her technician whose story has changed from "she got the full 75 minutes" to "I stopped cause her face was too irritated". In addition she is claiming that my girlfriend didn't get the additional add on cause it was not entered properly in the website. This is a blatant lie cause you can't enter them on the website any way besides adding a note (which worked perfectly fine for the add on she put on my massage the same way that was added no problem and paid for no problem) and it was why she tried calling first but the staff was too incompetent to take a phone reservation. The manager doesn't care about making sure the spa is providing the services charged for and should be ashamed to keep working there or any other spa. The only bright spot I'll add is the person who did my massage, Aimee Chaurette, who did an amazing job. If she transfers to a new spa I'll happily see her again but Balans is a joke and will offer you horrible service, blame you for their horrible service and harass you (or your girlfriend) for leaving an accurate review. read more

I found out about this place through ClassPass after trying to search for a place to use my credits on a massage. I signed up for a 30 min "head neck shoulder massage" on the app, but it didn't tell me who it was with. I showed up 15 minutes early and it was difficult to find - the entrance is like a semi-basement and the 1st floor is empty inside. I was about to walk up the stairs but saw a sign about removing shoes and putting on slippers, but the slippers looked like they were from a hotel and stained dirty gray and re-used/washed. I went up the stairs and there was no person in sight. After a few minutes, the receptionist showed up and checked me in. She told me to wait in the waiting area, which is a small very dimly-lit space with some arm chairs that again looked stained/dirty... I waited in that spot for a good 10 minutes before "Luke" or "Lucas" the massage person came for me. The room he led me to was also dark with no lights on and small enough to just fit a massage table. He asked me to lie face down and remove my top to my comfort level. He left the room, said he'd be back in 2 min, but didn't return for at least 5-10 min. I felt like I was waiting quite a while. He also asked if it was ok for him to touch my head and I said "Oh, for the scalp massage?" I agreed, but deeply regret letting him touch my head. He repeatedly ran his hands/fingers through my hair with ABSOLUTELY ZERO ACUPRESSURE OR MASSAGE ON THE SCALP. He LITERALLY messed up my hair so that it looked tangled and his wild swiping motions made my hair tie fall off to the floor. It was extremely awkward and uncomfortable. It became apparent that Lucas also is not a trained or licensed masseuse (as I read his bio after my appt). There were many times he just simply rested his fingers on my shoulders or neck with ZERO pressure to relieve the fascia or muscles, or he literally just rubbed his sweaty hands on my back in a swiping motion. That is not a massage and it is not relaxing. Lucas's hands also got burning hot by the time he touched my neck from rubbing his hands over my clothed back (thank god I left my shirt on). It was NOT comfortable. His hands were clammy even early on though, when he reached for my wrists which was kind of gross and made me question hygiene/if he washed his hands prior. After cringing inside for most of the session, the massage was over around the 30 minute mark. Lucas was waiting right outside the door after I got dressed and it looked like he was waiting for a tip. I told him he should apply more pressure, especially for the scalp massage (instead of brushing his hands over my hair). He didn't really respond to my comments and just nodded. I felt pressured to give him something, so I just offered a small Starbucks gift card that I had set aside for myself, which he happily accepted. But honestly I think I could've walked away from the experience without because it was not satisfying. This place looked barren and extremely bare-bones. For a "organic spa" on Newbury St, you'd think they'd have more of a luxury feel. I don't think many people come for the massages (which look VERY overpriced if you pay out-of-pocket, for someone who is untrained/unskilled). I checked their website after and saw many available slots open (most of them for Lucas). They should list on Classpass who the "masseuse" is, just like fitness classes list the name of the instructor at the time slot. I do not recommend this place, lots of nice words on the website that set false expectations. read more

I have been to many spas all over Boston, hotels, and then some, but out of all of them, none has compared to the quality experience of services I received at Balans. They have a small waiting room and the staff is very friendly, you take your shoes off downstairs on the first floor and walk up. Massage: I have had massages galore near and far, but I must praise Christina on her quality and execution. She did a fabulous prenatal massage and was so wonderful working out every kink and knot. Strongly recommend anyone her way pregnancy or non pregnancy. Facial: I will only get facials from here from now on, I will only come here and only request Daz, one of the best estheticians I have ever had and gives the most incredible game changing facial and shoulder massages breaking up all and any tension that is there. Every time my mom visits I always try to book her a massage. My mom has really bad allergies to sulfates and sulfate releasing chemicals so that was my top concern when looking for a spa to book. After a quick google search Balans seemed to be the only spa in the Boston area that only uses organic products and I booked her a 60 minute massage with Christina. When I picked her up after the massage her face literally looked younger, she was lighter and so relaxed. The products the spa uses are excellent and christina's services were incredible. my mom literally said "she has magic hands". My mom has many injuries and pulled muscles, Christina did a fantastic job of working out those knots and was very kind and warm in addition to being highly skilled. We will definitely be returning! I was in town for a conference and decided to celebrate the end of a long week with a spa visit. Balans was recommended by my hotel in Cambridge and I'm so glad I took the concierge's advice. The spa was a charming little oasis in the busyness of Back Bay. While not large, the size contributed to its coziness and made it the perfect sanctuary. When I made the massage appointment, I requested someone who specializes in deep tissue and was not disappointed. Lucas provided the perfect combination of stretching, shiatsu and relaxation, and was very attentive to my experience. Not a good experience. i knew within a minute of walking in that I would never be back. i was stopped at the door and asked to remove my shoes and pointed toward a box of slippers. the entryway was cluttered and the slippers in question used hotel slippers that were dirty. I'd booked a massage. The massage room was similarly cluttered and not in the least serene. It was also too warm with a fan for cooling. Massage was very poor. He skipped one arm entirely and caused me pain periodically throughout. He also massaged my feet, then wiped (not washed) his hands and moved on to my head and neck. there was a solid 5 minutes of some really awkward massaging behind my ears on on my face. I received a prenatal massage today with Christina which far exceeded my expectations. I find most prenatal massages relaxing but too light and lacking any sort of actual muscle relaxation/relief of tension because they don't go deep enough. Christina was incredibly skilled in knowing where to apply pressure and where not to. I walked out feeling rejuvenated, relaxed, and much less tight/achey. Her energy was so kind and wonderful. Came here through my classpass and used credits for a floatation therapy. It was an interesting experience but I probably wouldn't do it again. The staff was extremely kind and I loved calming decor and amenities of the place. However, it was a little bit creepy in my personal room. I was in a small room and in there was a bathroom that didn't have lights, a changing area, a standing area for shower, and the floatation area. I wish there was more calming decor around or that the first thing I open my eyes to wouldn't be a dark bathroom. Inside the floatation room was music that you can adjust and the water is infused with salt/minerals that is good for the body. I liked that it was warm inside. Afterwards, the lights turn on to let you know that your session has ended and you just shower and leave. There are a lot of towels and a lot of toiletries (face wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotions, body wash, facial moisturizer, aloe, etc) which was nice. I am sure that other people would enjoy this therapy and use it as a great meditation and relaxation area! read more

Amazing facials and massages. I was extremely tense and stressed recently so booked a package and extended my massage to 75 minutes. It was perfect and so needed. My skin is glowy like hadn't been in soooo long and honestly the massage relieved all the tension that was winding me up into pretzel. I recommend Kristen for massages and even bought a gift card for my sister to come and visit without a second thought. Note there have been several complaints on yelp and Google on the receptionist and I had no issues. I even had to rebook three times in 24 hrs abd no problems at all! read more

This spa is really lovely! I just visited for the first time today for a massage. The environment is warm and welcoming, the staff are very sweet and friendly, and the massage I received was on the better end of others I have had. My few issues with my experience were that I booked a massage with one person in particular, based on a recommendation I had received, and received a confirmation from the spa including this massage therapist's name. When I arrived, however, I was greeted by and given a massage by someone else. She did a lovely job and this was not at all her fault, but I was bothered by not only the change in provider but the lack of notice to me, given that I had specifically requested someone else. I also had to wait several minutes past my appointment time before I was brought back into the massage room, but then the massage still wrapped up at the scheduled end time (not a big difference, admittedly, but a slight annoyance). I had such a weird experience at this spa and I would never recommend it to anyone. I am not from the area but I was visiting my cousin who lives in Boston for Christmas. I came with my mother. Instead of buying Christmas gifts for each other, we do 'experiences'. We had heard about floating and decided we'd splurge on the experience as our 'gifts'. Balans was recommend to my cousin by a friend. As my cousin has two young kids, we weren't 100% sure if we were going to make it to Balans so we didn't make an appointment until the day before. I will say, they were accommodating and were able to squeeze us in. As they only have one float suite and all 3 of us wanted to try it, we figured we would do facial treatments while each of us took our turns floating. They were pretty good about scheduling that. We went up to the lobby and had to wait a solid 30 minutes before being seen. Finally, we were called. I went for my float first while my mom and cousin stayed back in the waiting area by reception. I found this a little odd as usually if you are getting a service at a spa you are given a robe and are taken back to a more relaxed waiting area with amenities and such. This did not exist at Balans. The receptionist took me back to my float suite & I told her I was new to this. She told me I had 5 minutes to shower, wash my hair and get into the float. I specifically asked if I should shower after as well and she said no because the salt has great skin benefits post-float. The receptionist said the lights would dim when it was time to get in in 5 mins & I would float for 30 mins. Once it was over, she said the water would start bubbling and the lights would slowly come on. Well, this NEVER HAPPENED! I had anxiety that I was in there too long as it felt way longer than 30 minutes in my mind. I got out to discover it was 45 minutes. I quickly grabbed all of my things, put on my robe and exited the float suite. There was a smaller waiting area that was more private than reception so I sat in there. My cousin and mom were still out in the general waiting area. My cousin was then taken back for her float and I sat chatting with my mom. I started to 'dry' and I was COVERED IN SALT. Everything. My hair was rock solid, I was flaky and white all over....sooo uncomfortable & itchy. It became apparent at this moment that this was wrong. You are definitely supposed to shower after the float, but how was I to know? The receptionist specifically told me not to. When my cousin came out from her float, she had also not showered - same thing, receptionist told her specifically not to due to the 'amazing skin benefits'. My mom went back for her float and my cousin and I just laughed uncomfortably about how salty and gross we were. We didn't know what to do - and there are NO LOCKER ROOMS HERE! Most spas have some sort of area with blow dryers, amenities, showers, etc... not a single thing here. Ridiculous. It gets better. I went back for my facial and the woman (she must've been one of the owners of the spa) wiped me off because I was that covered in salt. She asked why I didn't shower after the float and I explained the situation. She said she'd talk to the receptionist after my facial. I will say, my facial was lovely. After my facial, I returned to the waiting area where my cousin was. My mom had returned from her float by this time. The woman who did my facial came out after talking to reception. She accosted me and told me that 'there is no way the receptionist told me not to shower' as 'you must always shower after a float'. I asked why then, did my cousin and I both not shower? We BOTH were told not to shower for the exact same reason - these mythical, amazing skin benefits. (Note: My mom had showered after her float because she saw how we looked and also read a tiny sign tucked in a corner of the suite with a full page of text on it including instructions on how to float/showering/etc. I didn't see this sign during my float and wouldn't have even had the time to read it.) After offering no apology for this issue that was clearly their fault, they told us we could shower in the bathroom by the facial rooms which we accepted because we were so salty. However, it was a tiny shower in a 1 person bathroom with, again, no amenities. I was not given a blow-dryer or anything. My cousin also showered. My cousin and mom enjoyed their facials as well, but two of us left with soaking wet hair in negative degree temps with no makeup on and just generally feeling really bad about ourselves and quite the opposite of relaxed. We wanted to go out to a nearby bar for some cocktails after but we were too frustrated, wet, and not glammed up like we expected. Such a disappointing, expensive experience. read more
