This little place does not look like much, but it has really good food that seems to be authentic.

We've been dying to try this place, especially since it has so many rave reviews on here. The mysterious white building and windows you can't see into also piqued our interest. The truth: meh. We had the buttery chicken, chicken fried rice, pork cakes, spring rolls, meatball soup and oxtail soup. We were ready to chow. The food was flavorless and dry, unfortunately. After a few bites, we tossed everything except the fried rice (spicy!), buttery fried chicken and spring rolls. There was zero seasoning in everything, so it just tasted fatty and gelatinous when we bit into the pork cakes and oxtail. I mean, we knew gelatinous fat was part of the deal, we just didn't want another bite after that. The meatball soup was like a ball of meat goo in watery soup, which was served with dry chicken and plain noodles. We added tons of salt and it didn't help. This was a real bummer. We hope we caught this team on an off night, but these funky food lovers won't be headed back anytime soon. read more

The dearth of Indonesian food in Northern New England is really sad, but Bali Sate House is a beacon of hope. The food here is delicious and pretty authentic. The beef rendang is not as flavorful as what I used to have in Indonesia and is on the dry side, but I love the chicken satay and pompano woku. The deep-fried fish balls and es campur are also pretty good. Unfortunately the place is pretty small, so it's possible you won't get a table if you go on a weekend afternoon. Plan accordingly and call ahead of time to check that they're open if you're like me and don't live in the area. read more

Food was salty, staff was rude. Coming from philly where there is a galore of Indonesian restaurants, Bali sate house came short in comparison. Ordered oxtail soup to go, the broth was very salty and fatty. I had to put it in the fridge for a few hours and skimmed the fat. I thought it came with rice, it wasn't. It was a disappointment and I dont think I'm going to give it another try. The lady who took my order was very short in words and was unpleasant. I asked for recommendations and told her about my food sensitivity and she said "we dont have anything". She kept staring at me the whole time I was there. It was uncomfortable. As a native, I can attest the quality and authenticity of food at Bali Sate House. The "Sate Babi" (Pork Satay) is a must-order!! Seriously, one of the best pork satays I've ever had in my life! Tender meat, well-spiced, and quite a shareable portion. Each plate came with 5 satays which you can share with another person or just have it on your own... :-) A couple other favorites are "Nasi Ayam Kremes" (chicken rice with crunchy bits) and "Nasi Empal" (rice with sweet beef). Be sure to also check out the "Mie Ayam" when you are craving for noodle. HUGE Tip: The place is often understaffed, so call ahead and place your take-out or dine-in order Tip #2: Be sure to try the "bakso goreng" (fried meatball), which only served on Saturdays. Ordered their Friday special, Tahu Isi (stuffed tofu) and they were delicious. Served with fresh just like how they are served back home (Indonesia). Amazing!! First time trying Indonesian food and this restaurant was beyond exceptional. The flavor of each dish was so satisfying and the owner was so kind. We ordered nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice), sate babi (pork satay), mie ayam (noodles with chicken), and spring rolls. Everything was cooked to perfection! We drove from the Boston area to try this out since there aren't really any Indonesian restaurants local to us and it was 100% worth the hour and twenty minute drive. This place needs more wait staff. That's all the criticisms I have for now. Pork skewers on point. Oxtail Soup was bomb. Pompano took a little longer than I liked but came out fresh and flavorful. I don't tend to finish meals when I order two entrees but I made myself sick finishing them because it was just too damn good. Sadly it was better than the cuisine I had when I was in Jakarta. I'm no Indonesian food expert. The extent of my experience with the cuisine has occurred in Dutch kitchens. I've been to this restaurant a few times... And I'm considering moving to Indonesia for chicken satay. The chicken satay at this restaurant is addictive for me. The restaurant is small, with only a handful of tables. So groups would do best to avoid their peak hours. I find myself having to talk myself out of driving the hour to this restaurant. Luckily for me, I visit a doctor in the area city. I never knew delicious food could trick me into doing semi annual checkups. This chicken satay has me the healthiest I've ever been! read more

I'm part Indonesian so I'm always looking for Indonesian food. I grew up eating all the staples and fine spices. I very much enjoyed the sate and the peanut sauce. The beef rendung was spot on as was the lontung rice cubes. Our server was very pleasant but this place is more of a takeout environment than a restaurant atmosphere. The dessert drink I had (dont remember the name) with crushed ice was amazing delicious and fresh. All of the ingredients tastes fresh and well prepared. My only criticism is the crackers they served with the gado gado were garlic flavor. I prefer the shrimp flavor. I will be back for more for sure. read more

Enak sedap mantap! If you want to try authentic Indonesian food, then this is the place! We started with bakso goreng as appetizer. Nice crispy deep fried fish balls, crunchy on the outside, while remain moist inside, accompanied with homemade chilly sauce. It's so good we order a second plate. Then come the main courses: nasi campur, nasi goreng indo, sate babi, and rendang. Nasi campur comes with chicken and kale (substitute for cassava leaves stew), beef rendang (spicy beef curry), egg (we had fried instead of boiled), and bonus kekian (fried ground pork cake) on a bed of white rice. Yuuummmm. So good we ordered seconds. Nasi goreng indo is classic Indonesian style fried rice (note: egg fried rice, not soy sauce ridden typical American Chinese fried rice) filled with diced chicken and egg, topped with fried egg. The chilly level is customizable, just ask... Sate babi comes with five juicy yummy pork sates (grilled skewers) on a bed of white rice. Simple yet so satisfying. We opted for the sweet sate this time, but we also know this place makes mean hot version of this dish. Then we ordered more beef rendang. Nice spicy beef curry. The meat melts in your mouth. Finally, we closed with es teller 77 (traditional fruit cocktail, not in menu, it was a special item). Great tower of fruit (jackfruit, avocado, coconut, and jelly) in the es teller mix (condense milk and syrup). Yuuummmm.... The atmosphere is casual. They'll take credit card for order more than $10. My husband and I visited for a late lunch today and were very happy with all the food. Neither of us had tried Indonesian food, so we asked Erni (the owner) to recommend some dishes. I read some great reviews and wanted to try this since I've never had Indonesian food and it's nearby. Per some reviews, I ordered the sati Babi (sweet) and beef rendang. The beef rendang was delicious, spicy, flavorful and tender. But the sati Babi- OH MY GOD. So good, I can already imagine myself craving it tomorrow. It will probably become a problem. I am struggling writing this review. I hope the food will be good. The issue really has to do with ordering and getting my order. I ordered at 12:20 on menufy.com for curbside pickup. I was told the order 2ould be 25-35 minutes. I got to the restaurant and waited in my vehicle a few minutes. Teetering between four and five stars. It's a modest place. You order at the front and then they bring your food to the table. Drinks are from a cooler- I had Japanese green tea. Here's the thing- after our first visit I want to go back and order everything on the menu. It's a flavor explosion with your Indonesian grandma cooking. Great new addition to Somersworth! Beef rendang was very tender and lovingly seasoned. Pork sate had the heat turned up nicely upon request - comes with sticky rice that absorbs the heat accordingly. We went on a Thursday my wife and daughter love sticky rice they get it when ever they can, the lady taking the orders said to them you really want that then rudely asked them both if they even know what it was and yes they do. They start bringing the sate when the lady says we are out of sticky rice order something else once again very rudely. I will not go on service here is awful, food is the most 3, the lady working the front is a rude nasty person. Having been to Indonesia many times it was great to find an Indonesian restaurant in the Northeast since there are basically none. We drove up from Boston to give this a shot. The food is absolutely fantastic and authentic. It is a fairly new restaurant and is very clean and simple. Indonesian food is very unique and different from other Asian cuisines. Not that the best indo foods i can tell. Went there and ordered a few menu, batagor, pempek, and nasi empal. However, not as good as i expected.. hmm, the pempek i think i can not taste the fish at all (for those who know that pempek is made from mackerel fish with flour together) all i can taste is only flour... nothing much.. and its only 2 big pieces of pempek cut into 4 small pieces for $9. When we also open the batagor, it's like not really that appetizing. The batagor is bakso tahu goreng right?! There's no fried tofu there.. and the batagor is kinda like made from wonton skin which is like a chinese restaurant wonton fried.. so it doesn't authentic at all for the batagor.. and the worst is the egg, they gave us the boiled egg.. not the egg that should be fried with flour (which is the authentic batagor would be like) and they didn't peel off the egg shell HAHA! so we were like confused and a bit uncomfortable that there's one whole egg inside the batagor.. oh! The batagor also tasted like only flour too (where batagor is also made from mackerel fish and flour) and the last thing, the nasi empal thing that i ordered, can't reaaally eat them at all. Ended up i just taste a bit and then throw the whole thing. The empal tastes like yesterday's food.. like they just heated up the empal and gave us.. nothing much... with only a tiny piece of tempe and bakwan jagung (which it was overfried) huuuft! read more
