We checked out Balkan after reading about them in the new 2025 Style edition, and we're so glad we did! The pita sourdough bread is absolutely incredible--soft, chewy, and full of flavor. We ordered the fried cheese, gyro burger, börek, and Turkish coffee, and everything was outstanding. The gyro burger was great - yellow onions and lettuce and perfectly seasoned, the börek was crispy and packed with flavor, and the fried cheese had the perfect golden crust with a melty center. To top it off, the Turkish coffee was rich, bold, and the perfect way to round out the meal. The service was warm and welcoming, making for a fantastic dining experience. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Loved this little restaurant! Food came out fresh and hot and beautifully arranged. Our hostess/server was super friendly and engaging. Couldn't have wanted a more sincere and warm welcoming experience. Ate so much and decided to take home two orders of their Spartak Torte. Everything was delicious!

Balkan is a hidden gem. I have to admit the strip mall they are located in made me question if all the 5 star reviews were wrong......the 5 star reviews are right! Specializing in homemade traditional food from the Balkan region, this spot is unique and delicious! We were greeted as soon as we walked in, and we were seated right away. Service was outstanding! Friendly, personable, and quick. They carefully explained the menu, answered all our questions, and gave us recommendations. Everything was tasty! Awesome homemade comfort food! Simple, yet clean interior. What we ate: Falafel:Deep fried chick peas and fava beans fritters served with homemade tzatziki sauce Cornbread: Balkan style corn bread served with feta cheese spread, roasted red pepper and eggplant sauce, kalamata olives, and feta cheese Balkan Steak and Cheese: Served with lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, mayo, and house dressing Goulash: Tender pieces of beef cooked for hours with fresh vegetables and finished with a slight kick of paprika. Served with a side of mashed potatoes. Spartek Torte: Delicate Chocolate Cake is beyond delicious. It is made out of extra thin multilayers with a gentle balance of chocolate and cream. The texture of this cake is so soft and light that it will melt in your mouth in every bite. Made from a traditional Eastern European recipe. My husband and I tried the Balkan Restaurant on a whim, and are glad we did. Located in a nondescript strip mall in Henrico, the restaurant's stark exterior belies the cozy, inviting restaurant inside. The service was friendly and not rushed, and the food delicious, and generously portioned. The fried feta cheese and burek appetizers are outstanding. The feta is served with a lovely red pepper sauce and was light and crisp. We had never had burek before - light pastry with cheese and spinach. It was served room temperature, and we would have preferred it hot, but that didn't stop us from devouring it. We ordered the mixed grill platter for dinner. All the meat was tender and perfectly cooked, and the standouts were the veal cutlet and the cevapi. The platter was huge and we used the leftover the next day for salads at lunch. We are looking forward to a return visit.

Officially my favorite meal in RVA for over 10 years! Mixed Grill Platter with steak, chicken, veal, ćevapi sausages & fresh veggies along with their utterly addictive Balkan Potatoes... which will change your life! Must be paired with their homemade bread and various imported Eastern-European wines you can't get anywhere else in the city! Such a cozy and welcoming vibe and they always treat you like family. Do yourself a favor and don't walk... RUN to check them out and all of their unique and delicious offerings!

Absolutely amazing sandwiches. Hands down the BEST fries I have ever had - phenomenally crunchy. I can't believe I am just now finding out about this restaurant. We ordered off of Yelp (Grubhub) and the food was ready so fast, and the staff were so kind. If you are around the area, definitely check out this fine establishment. The parking is easy and the restaurant is spacious. 12/10 would recommend!

First time here and we ordered the grilled platter with grilled veggies and Balkan potatoes. It was amazing. I don't eat veal, but this was great. The grilled chicken is delicious - it is chicken breast but moist and flavorful. The potatoes were like scalloped potatoes but are a must try if it's your first visit. Get some warm bread to dip in that sauce as well. You're welcome. We'll definitely order the platter again. Service was a little slow because there was only one server but very friendly and accommodating. Turkish coffee was good but wasn't a fan of the baklava because it is soaked/wet and not crispy. Will for sure be back though.

Don't let this small shop full you, inside is an amazing place with warm and welcoming people. I ordered the veal with roasted vegetables (8.6), potatoes in a cream sauce (8.8) and fresh baked warm and fluffy bread (8.3). Overall, an 8.5 experience. Highly recommend!!!

The goulash is the best thing on the menu and it is delicious. It is a huge serving with equal mashed potatoes. I've only eaten take out.

The food was great and I had a great experience. This is definitely a versatile place since you could come to hang out with the boys watching sports together, grab a quick bite to go, or have a nice dinner. The Bosnian coffee was a great way to start while waiting for the food. I ordered the lamb chops and sarma. Both of my friends enjoyed philly cheesesteak sandwiches. All of the dishes were flavorfully seasoned and cooked well. For dessert I had the tufahija apple dessert since it was the only gluten free dessert option. For how simple that dessert was it was surprisingly good. It was cooked apple stuffed with walnuts and garnished with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and the syrup that it was cooked in as well. The apple still had a bit of crisp texture which I enjoyed. Throughout our meal the staff checked on us to make sure everything was going well. I'll 100% come here again since I'd like my friends to try some of the grilled meats next time.

The restaurant is a open area, well lit, cozy, clean and styled simply. The restaurant has a simple Happy Hour menu for during the weekdays starting at 4:30pm. Inside seating are a few booths, stand alone & bar top tables, bar seating and a small shaded outdoor patio seating area. If you have a large party with more than 6 people calling ahead would be wise. The hostess was friendly and the manager was more than helpful. The food server was pleasant and understood my dietary restrictions and very helpful to ask the chef if it would be possible to accommodate a few menu options for me which they kindly agreed. We had an appetizer order of fried calamari which was very tender, lightly flour coated crispy rings and tentacles served with a delicious red sauce. Our entree order of 3 shrimp tacos was very tasty, tender and filling as was my special made order of mixed vegetables from the chef. We look forward to returning to try additional items off their menu as well as desserts which were reasonably priced and portions were very nice.

I came here for my 30th birthday and had the best time! I was looking for a spot open on Monday…read moreevenings and Adarra had an opening. I booked a table for four. The green building is unmarked so it took us a second to feel confident about going inside. It's located in Oregon Hill so there is some street parking around. We live nearby so walked to it. I had the best culinary experience with my favorite people. It's a very dark and moody restaurant, great for intimate or romantic moments. They recommend you do family style. We ordered five dishes for our four person group. Someone in our party was gluten free and it was not hard to accommodate that. I believe they cook almost all the meals on a open fire. The menu changes with the seasons and I wish I took a picture to share the proper names of what we had, but here is what we tried: Cocktails: We each got one and they are very creative cocktails. I love how experimental they get with them. I tried a clarified strawberry mojito which wasn't too sweet and easy to drink. A friend of mine got a mojito old fashioned that was strong and had nice bitters. I'm blanking on my fiancé's drink, but it was my favorite for its sweetness and carbonation. My best friend got a unique martini-like drink with onion and salt she loved. Asparagus Salad: This was refreshing and perfect for the spring day we had. I loved the cream and strawberry components. Scallops: These were so tasty. I loved the bed of salt they were on, it really brought out the flavors. Octopus: This was my favorite dish of the evening. The flavors were GREAT. I started with the potatoes and spinach part and was already in love with the dish. I was so happy that they cooked the octopus to perfection. Drum: This was at the bottom of the list of what we had for me, but still really yummy. The silky fish was a bit plain without it's very tasty crunchy skin, but if you combined the two it was good. Trout: We devoured this. This was the star of the show for my fiancé. It was huge and great for four people (considering we ate a bunch of other plates before). The oil it came is was so yummy. It was a good fish y'all, good fish is good fish. Basque cheesecake with olive oil drizzle: My birthday cake choice for the evening. The olive oil was a little overpowering for me, but the cheesecake was still yummy. We loved our experience here. It seems like a lot of recent reviews have some issues with the timing, but it worked lovely for our group. We got there at 5:30pm and left around 7:30pm. We wanted a more relaxed experience and loved our conversation so it did not feel this long. But it is worth being mindful about timing. We did take a while to order drinks. Overall, it was a tasty and lovely time here. It's a pricier restaurant, but totally worth it. This has been on my want to try list for a long time and I am beyond happy I finally tried it.

I tried one of the specials that I now see pictured in every restaurant review - butterflied trout. I admit it was phenomenal and I'm shocked how anyone can get a trout to take up so much space on a plate! My only regret is that I did not ask for the price before ordering. I'm glad I didn't inquire, otherwise I would not have ordered it. It was fantastic.- I think $70 for a trout entree is a reach. Even though it was a special, at that price point I think the servers should tell you the price regardless of whether you asked. I truly appreciate great food; both cooking it and it and eating it. We are fortunate to have so many great restaurants in Richmond. Adarra is not in my price range for very frequent visits in spite of them doing everything exceptionally well. I will go back, but I can't justify it being part of my regular rotation.
