Walked in on a Saturday evening. Got confused at first because when you enter, the place divides into left and right. To the left is where you place orders. Menu board that says Habibi Grill but when we asked the owner, he said that they still serve the Afghan cuisine. They have a separate menu for this. The area on the right is the dining area. It was quiet when we had dinner there. Got the lamb shank qabuli which was very tender and served with Qabuli rice and side salad. Lamb kabob was also bursting with flavor but we thought the serving size was small. The falafel plate was very good. Everything was so flavorful and we really enjoyed the food. The owner was very nice. Since we shared the food, we would have appreciated if we were also given an extra plate; nevertheless, we were starving so it was alright. Although it looks unassuming from outside, it's bright and spacious inside with the lovely aromas greeting you at the door. Ambience: I got seated and placed the order right away. While my order was getting ready in front of me, I had a chance to go around andexplore around. It was a super spacious restaurant with two levels of seating areas. Very bright and surprisingly guarded from the noisy traffic, it was a great spot for a quiet lunch. Food & service: My order of Kebab & fries served with Naan, Tzatziki sauce and Afghani salad was made to order and tasted very juicy and flavorful. Spiced perfectly and the right portion size for 1 person, every bite of the freshly made naan and kabob was perfection. Chicken kabob platter was very good! The chicken was juicy and definitely something I'd get again. I did like the rice as well! I feel like for almost $15 the portion should be a bit bigger though! I was in Richmond yesterday and wanted to check out some Afghani food. I've had a great deal of experience with the restaurants up in the Washington DC area. This restaurant appeared to have some good reviews but I was pretty disappointed. The Samosa was good and the Manto dumplings were ok, but the tomato and lentil sauce was also pretty bland when it should have been more rich tasting. The most disappointing was the lamb shank Qabili (Kabuli) was definitely not up to par. It was a very large portion, but it was very bland, lacking the warm spices of cardamom and cinnamon. It was more like steamed basmati rice with carrots and raisins. It did not seem to be cooked in the broth like it should have been. The lamb shank was large and cooked well but again, it lack flavor and seasoning. I don't live near any Afghani restaurants, which I have enjoyed a lot in the past. So I was looking forward to this on my trip to Richmond. However, if I return to Richmond I will definitely try a different restaurant. read more

I picked up the bottled yogurt drink. Not sweet as Indian yogurt lassi but If you don't mind not bad. Spouse got a can of Pepsi. My main order is the mantu $11.99 and spouse ordered juicy kabob $12.99. Mantu is delicious so is spouse's dish. The hot sauce was on the side for the Mantu. I used very little. THIS IS IT: HE BEST FAMILY OWNED SMALL-BUSINESS I eat out all the time and let me tell you, I don't usually give 5 stars in all categories out easily. This place deserves the title of "best small business" spot in VA. And here is why. 1. The Food: attention to food quality is the number one priority, I have eaten fine dining in New York, and commonly you eat out of premium silverware and golden chairs but the food is the main thing you come for, and these people brought to me an "authentic" Afghan cooking like the one I taste in an Afghani home or in Uzbekistan. The Lamb shank was cooked to perfection, the Pillow was steamed soft and properly seasoned, the bread was fresh, hot, and not over burned. 2. The Service: they posted fast-food low prices, me and my friend spent 50 bucks and ate like kings, but that's not all, we were greeted promptly as we entered, the menu was explained to us in detail and pleasant attitude, and although payment is upfront, the service is brought to the table and the waiter checks on you similar to how you would dine at Olive Garden or better places. 3. The Atmosphere: people don't often care for more than a comfortable sofa, big table, and nice interior decor, this place while looks like a restaurant gives you a homie feeling thanks to its lighting, big windows, spacious arrangement and comfortable seating, and even thou they are in the middle of remodelling they take care to keep the area tidy and quite during opening hours. 4. Soooo so good! Although we had some difficulty with Grub Hub not delivering the order correctly the restaurant's customer service was amazing and refreshing! I haven't seen customer service like this in a long time. I believe it was the owner or manager but they remade our beef Mantu order because the delivery person from grub hub forgot the Mantu. The owner wanted to make sure we had a freshly made Mantu and was even willing to drop it off to us himself, but my husband went to pick it up and owner gave us an extra baklava to make it right. The Mantu was so delicate and delicious, It was my first time trying it. I loved it! Very tender and moist. It says spicy but I didn't think it was. I would not return. I was happy to watch as the two cooks formed falafels in front of us, thin disks of falafel, then drop them in the fryer. Unfortunately what came out (see picture) was a poor tasting, and even worse texture, mess. The inside of the falafels were between the consistency of fudge and cake frosting, and they tasted pretty bad We also had a huge piece of baklava that was inedible. All the kebabs come sizzling on a hot plate and large portions enough to feed 3 to 4 people. My favorite thing with a custard for dessert so light creamy top with a nice cranberry glaze. I also really enjoyed the baklava. I must try. When you come to eat here think Italy no rush food coming out at a little bit of a slower pace.
