I keep ordering the cevapi sandwich (served on the yummy lepinja bread), so I can't tell you how the rest of the menu fares, but my dinner companions have enjoyed everything from the vegetable sandwich to the cabbage rolls to the goulash. I've never seen this place busy, which makes me worried for them. Perhaps they're simply still unknown to the Richmond foodie scene, or the snobs won't eat outside of the Fan/Downtown areas. The restaurant is clean and the wait staff was friendly. The food is reasonably priced and good sized portions. The Burek with spinach and cheese is great. The fried cheese appetizer is deep fried feta with a cold dip. I think the dip served warm would be more appealing however being summer it was fine. Try a European soda (you can get Coke or Pepsi products anywhere) - Shokata was refreshing and the Cockta tasted like a cream soda. The deserts were first class. The chocolate torte and apple fritter was like my grandmother used to bake, delicious. I was surprised they used a fake whipped cream which it didn't need for garnish. We visited this restaurant on a weekend evening and enjoyed delicious grilled meals and great service. The food was fresh, well flavored and made me curious about trying more of their dishes. We ended up buying some meat and spinach pies to go as a result of our positive experience and we were not disappointed. My only recommendation to the management would be to add some sort of hummus or yogurt based dip with meat platters. read more

I never knew this place existed until I saw a groupon and bought one. The food was really great. We had the mixed grill that came with a potato side dish that was to die for. All the meats were delicious, tender and moist. I can't wait to go back and try something different. I ordered the baklava and didn't like it, it wasn't what I was used to and it was very cold. The burek, chevape, and the balkan potatoes make up the perfect meal with a combination of exotic flavors and rich filling comfort food. We have never had Balkan food, so I cannot attest to how it compares to others. We all did enjoy everything and it fit the bill of "something different". We will go again if in the area. We started with the Fried Akkawi Cheese, and the Ajvar was yummy. We also had the BUREK stuffed with spinach. It was tasty as well. For mains we had Cevapi Sandwich, Hungarian Goulash, Shish Kebab Platter, Balkan Gourmet Shnitzel. No one had any complaints and we all tasted each others mains. We had the Baked Apple Rolls. This was not to our liking as the apple inside was cold. My son swears this is the way it was suppose to be served but the rest of us thought it would be better warm. The Balkan Gourmet Shnitzel is epic. The best way to describe it would be a uniquely seasoned ground beef patty with gouda cheese served on a wonderful chewy roll, and topped generously with something that's like a cross between whipped butter and soft cheese. Comes with a salad which is vinegary (and a good thing to pair this with), and perfectly seasoned fries. Dont go for the atmosphere, go for the meats. Only been here 2x. Both times I got the Cevapi Sandwich. Its mouth watering good. Had relatives try the Grilled Mixed Grill and they were happy. Planning a lunch with my bride to try something new. If your typical meal has the word "value" in it, stay clear. If you like different cuisines (and your not a veg), definitely give it a try. I was really looking forward to trying Balkan and was pretty disappointed with my experience. The soda was flat. The fried cheese had obviously been heated up in the microwave (cold in the center but hot on the bottom). The cheese had an interesting taste, it would have been really good if it was fresh. I got the Sataras, which was ok. My husband liked his Balkan steak and cheese sandwich. Service was good and fast. Nice space too. Came here for lunch with co-workers based on the Yelp reviews. At first we were the only group in the restaurant, so I was. bit skeptical. The waitress was friendly and very helpful, explaining the Balkan specialties on the menu. Although I wanted to try the stuffed cabbage, it was a really hot day and I decided to try the waitress's suggestion of the freshly grilled steak sandwich served in a fresh pita-like bread. Everything was delicious. The bread was amazing and the red pepper spread was an excellent complement to the meat. This place is a gem! Located next to Papa John's on Patterson, it's really easy to drive right by. Don't! I loved everything about this place. When I got there, there was only one other table. By the time my family arrived, the one waitress was serving 6 tables including two big parties. It was crazy! Everyone came in all at once, yet she didn't miss a beat. She still had time to tell me about their drink list and the menu. I was very impressed. When my family arrived we were all starving and dove right into the menu, I order the kabob platter and it was fantastic! The food is very simple, and I mean that in the best way possible. Lunch in the store was good with the goulosh. So I ordered the same thing "to go" so that my wife could taste it. When she opened it, the quantity of goulosh was about 1/2 of what I had in the store. Went to this restaurant today with a guest based on positive yelp reviews. We ordered the Spinach Burek as an appetizer, which was delicious. The only downside to the appetizer was that it made it nearly impossible to eat the massive Gyro's we ordered. Quality food at a reasonable price! The Balkan Potatoes are a very tasty side dish, but I would strongly recommend not ordering as much as we did. I was so full that I couldn't even drink water without feeling like I was going to pop. As I researched possible places to eat out on a Friday night I found the Balkan Restaurant online so decided to give it a try. As we pulled up, it turned out to be one of those non-descript strip mall restaurants. We went inside, were immediately seated and ordered two glasses of wine (6$ apiece) which were nice. We started with the meat Burek (which was excellent; meat wrapped in a flaky pastry crust and baked to perfection). For the main course we ordered the Mixed grill for two and were not disappointed. It consisted of Angus beef kebabs, chicken kebabs, Cevapi, and Pljeskavica, as well as grilled vegetables. For our side we ordered the cabbage salad which was very refreshing. The food was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. Unfortunately we were too full to order desserts but they looked amazing as well. We had lunch here on a Saturday. OUr party of 3 had a gyro, sasgaes and a steak dish. Everything was great. Service was a bit slow, esepcially given that we were the only ones in the place.
