I'm so happy I decided to stop here to have some lunch. Their food is absolutely delicious. Their staff is also super polite and quick with your order. The Balkan Restaurant is a small but very nice and cozy place. The owner Amir was very nice to all his customers and knew many of their names. Their prices are also very reasonable. Their Balkan dishes taste so authentic and yummy. I had lepinja bread with falafel and it tasted like heaven! The bread was the best part of the meal. I got the meat platter. Most of the meat was delicious, but the hamburger patty was completely uncooked. The blood ran all over the container and soaked all the other meats. It was still delicious after I wiped the blood off. I couldn't eat the burger though. Maybe that's just how it's supposed to be if it's Balkan. This place is such a hidden gem. My favorite steak and cheese sandwich I've had in Richmond and WITHOUT A DOUBT, THE BEST FRIES I'VE EVER HAD, period. If it sounds like I'm shouting, it's because I am. I don't know if they triple fry them or what, but between the texture and seasoning, they are perfection. Fight me on that. One word- AMAZING! This applies to the food and service! My best friend was in town and we wanted to try something different so I suggested the new Balkan restaurant. Wow!!!! We were blown away with the two waitresses who were so sweet and very helpful in deciphering the menu items. We started off with a flakey cheese appetizer. It was fabulous! I ordered the Goulash, the meat was so juicy and tender, the sauce had a great flavor of just the right amount of spices! My friend ordered the stuffed Balkan burger, this was to die for! Huge! It almost took on a steak/burger combo. The bread was so moist and fresh! Of course we had to get dessert! We ordered the traditional shredded apple roll. It reminded us of American pie just with a more shredded consistency of apple. We highly recommend this place!!!! We went here Friday night and it was very good! Portion sizes were quite generous and the service was on point. It helped that we had the place to ourselves (it was early at 6pm). I wanted to try something out of the ordinary and foreign to me and was pleased to find that this restaurant did not cater to food outside of its wheelhouse as some restaurants will do. I tried Balkan Restaurant on a whim for carry out and was very impressed. They make authentic Balkan food and you can tell that they know what they are doing. The Burek (puff pastry stuffed with meat or spinach and cheese) is delicous, and great for sharing. The shish kabob platter was delicious as well -- chicken, onions, green peppers, squash lightly seasoned and grilled to perfection. I think my favorite thing is the extras. Aijvar is a roasted red pepper and eggplant spread that is delicious, and the Lepinja bread that comes with most orders is light and soft. Please check out Balkan Restaurant! I'm a huge fan of international food. I feel like Thai and Vietnamese is a once a week thing. Finding little niche places that serve Israeli or even Russian food is a constant hunt for me (and I'm still looking for a place with good authentic Arabic food, but that's another story). So when I heard about this place on Livingsocial, I couldn't pass it up. My fiancé and I went here a few nights back. Upon walking in, I thought the decor was nice, but the location left a lot to be desired. Our waitress was, off the bat, very nice, but quick to disappear. We decided to split the fried cheese and the grill platter (steak cooked medium, remember that later). The cheese was unlike anything I've ever tasted, in a good way. The sauce (a roasted red pepper sauce) was excellent. And that's where the good stopped. The grill platter came out with bread, and essentially a plate of meat. Our waitress didn't bother to tell us what was what on the plate, so we had to use our imagination with some of the meats. While I know the difference between steak and chicken, grilled cuts of beef and lamb can look pretty similar. The chunks of steak (I'm pretty positive that's what they were) were inedible - tender is a word that I would use to describe good steak, but not this one. There was a patty of sorts, and I'm not sure what kind of meat it was - either beef or lamb. Either way, it tasted like Windex. The provided bread was useless - while tasty, it was dry, and there was nothing to put on the bread (no oil, no butter, and despite ordering "medium" steak for the both of us, there wasn't a drop of juice on the plate to be found). The only thing good on there was the chicken and the veggies, and that's pretty difficult to screw up anyway. My fiancé liked the sausage, but it just didn't taste right to me. But hey! We both agreed the french fries were awesome. Needless to say, I won't be driving back from the fan to here again. I see soo many positive reviews of the place, but I can't possibly give it anything more than 2 stars. read more

I managed to convince some more conservative eaters (i.e. my parents) to try this play with me, and this place was an absolute home run. I ordered the goulash, which was good and probably the worst of what was ordered. My dad, a man whose main pleasures in life are whiskey, cigarettes, and meat, ordered the mixed grill platter, and loved it. The meat was really well prepared. Someone got the stuffed cabbage, which was great, and a burek, one of my favorite foods (the Bosnian woman at the farmer's market in Charlottesville makes amazing bureks - go find her). So much so, that my family hired Balkan Restaurant to cater our wedding of 75 people. We ordered the Feta Salad, The Chicken and Beef Kebabs, Bread, Balkan Potatoes and Grilled Vegetables. When looking for and dining in ethnic restaurants I tend to look for a couple things: clientle is mainly from that region, strip malls, competition from other restaurants featuring food from that region, and ok to bad english. In DC/NoVa this usually means authentic tasty surprises. In RVa I kind of have to take what I can get. Balkan covers the first two conditions and although I said 3 stars, its more of a 3.25. The food is good and flavor profile is distinctly Balkan. The reason why I can't give more stars is because most things on the menu you can taste something very similar at a "Greek" restaurant in town. Balkan doesnt really bring anything new or unique to the RVa food scene. There are three things you can't find at typical "Greek" places though: goulash, cevapi, and balkan burger. The balkan burger though, has seasonings very similar to "greek" ground beef dishes. Another reason is, I've had authentic Balkan food while in Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, and my friends parents kitchen. This place pales in comparison. All in all, pretty good place. Would go again if I'm craving Balkan flavor profile or chevapi. According to my friend, the seasoning in Cevapi is authentic as it gets and he can't recreate it at home. Oh and the bread they serve cevapi on is pretty good too. read more
