In a recent move, my two drawer file cabinet was locked accidentally. After a vain hour long search for its key, I called Ballard Lock & Key. In a very short time, a very buoyant and courteous man arrived, who introduced himself, and asked where the file cabinet was located. Then he analyzed the problem and the physical structure, explained what the problem was, and after a very short discussion, picked the lock which we hope never gets locked again. It is an old style sturdy version which is they don't make today. This entire session lasted less than 15 minutes!!! Wow - Robie was knowledgeable, skilled, quick to grasp the problem, quicker in solving the problem. I feel quite fortunate to have this inconvenience quickly and skillfully removed. read more

These guys are the BEST! (and I rarely write reviews) I called yesterday around 5 to resolve a problerm with a door lock that has no key for it. They were at the house within one hour, did the work very well and even made THREE spare keys for me for free! I like my locksmiths just like I like my... pizza. Which is to say I like 'em quick, easy and cheap. I needed two more sets of a set of keys. I rolled up around 1:30pm on a Tuesday afternoon and strolled on in. I was greeted instantly and had an employee directed over to help me out. I told him what I was there for and about 2 minutes later I had two sets of shiny new keys. I paid 'em and went home to try my new keys. All four of the keys worked (this has not been the case for me in the past with keys from elsewhere) and I was in business. There isn't a lot of fluff here. You need keys? Come here and be on your way in minutes with keys that work for a fair price. If you want balloons and cake just for walking through the door I suggest you go to Chuck E Cheese and crash a 5 year old's birthday party... and if you're going to be a jerk you may as well steal their toys too. I got locked out of my apartment at 3:35AM with my dog on Christmas Day (today). I was able to crash at a friend's place for a few hours during the night but still had no way back in. I called a few locksmiths and they all wanted to charge me an arm and a leg. Bob from Ballard Lock & Key actually called me back and offered to swing by and unlock me at no charge since it was Christmas! I can't praise this guy enough. He was responsive, quick and wouldn't even accept the little cash that I did have in my wallet. This is what customer service should be like. I'm kind of annoyed at Ballard Lock & Key. I called at 8am and the rep said that no one would be able to get to me before 10am. This is not "fast, 24 hour service", especially considering that I live a mile away from them. I'm sure that if you could get them to come out, they would be unicorns and rainbows, but I don't think that they should only have one person on staff and advertise their service as 24 hours. read more

I needed the locks rekeyed at our house urgently and reached out to Ballard lock and Key in the afternoon. They were able to squeeze me in late in the day and the locksmith, Andy, even fixed the striker on my front door, which didn't line up properly. Then the next day I realized I missed and door and he came right back and rekeyed it to match as part of the initial charge. They were responsive, professional, and kind! read more

I called these guys because of the great Yelp reviews. I am so disappointed. I swore the guy on the phone said $35 to come out and $15 to unlock it. Apparently I misheard him. $35 to come out, $150 to unlock my door. and the 20 minutes was actually 45 minutes... Got home from kickboxing around 9:30 pm and locked myself out while taking out the compost. Still soaked in sweat from the gym, no phone, everything inside. My neighbor let me use her phone to call our landlord, but our landlord must have been asleep because it went to voicemail. Out comes the Yelp app and in goes a search for locksmiths. "Ballard Lock&Key? They have 5 stars. That's pretty great AND I just finished reading a wonderful set of graphic novels called Locke &Key, surely this complete coincidence means something?" It didn't, but I called Ballard Lock&key anyway. So, so, so glad I went for it! Bob answered the phone *right* away and though he was already on another rescue mission for someone else in a land far, far away, he said he could come out here afterwards. He arrived before the estimated time and got me back indoors. He also threw in some copies of my key in case I wanted to give a spare to my neighbor! The service was excellent and I will gladly call again should I ever neglect to bring my brain with me when I head outdoors. Thank you, Bob. I was thrilled with the integrity and good attitude that I experienced today. I called last night to see if the lock that had broken could be fixed. I was told to bring it in and if they could fix it, they would. $15 repair and it works better than ever! While I was in the shop, they received a call from someone on Capital Hill and let them know that it would be less expensive for them to call a locksmith who was closer to them. Having to call a locksmith at 9pm on a Saturday night is not my idea of a great thing to do, but I'm glad I called Ballard Lock & Key. I felt a bit guilty because I caught the owner while he was eating dinner! He said, "No problem, I'll be right over." Whew. If you mapquest Ballard Lock & Key to my home it'll take 22 minutes, Bob arrived in 30. Considering I knew he was finishing dinner, he made excellent time. In less than 2 minutes the door was open. We had a wonderful discussion of the merits of high tech security locks on a glass front door (not a great idea and a waste of money), and the local crime rate. I was stuck with an urgent issue Monday morning. I had called Ballard Lock and Key and it went to a message. I had not left a message since I didn't have time to wait for someone to get back to me. Instead I found another company that answered their phone. It was not a pleasant phone call or experience. A little while later, I got a call from Bob at Ballard Lock and Key to see if I still needed help. I was already impressed that he called back even though I didn't leave a message. We got to talking and he gave me some very vital and important information about the other company I was about to work with. Bob seemed very trustworthy and I felt comfortable believing what he was telling me, which wasn't good news to hear. At this point I needed new locks on a condo and I needed it done in a hour to let people come in to work on it. Bob had said that if I was able to cancel the other company he could help me out and gave me a price then and could meet my timing. Bob got to my condo and worked with my mother who was there to help and my mom said he was very nice and helpful and quick. Just moved into our new home and needed to change the locks....and wanted to add a deadbolt for extra safety. Can I do more than 5 stars because the service I got was so over-the-top good? Seriously, I have driven by the shop countless times but the hours are by appointment only. But I read a few RAVE reviews and thought, "OK, just call and make an appointment. What can it hurt? I have already wasted two trips to mega stores to get one good key out of 7!" So I called... And they said how fast can you be at the end of your street? In less than 5 minutes their van was pulling away and I had three keys that worked perfectly. Our home was broken into and burglarized on a Friday. We called Ballard Lock and Key after 6pm and Bob picked up right away and jumped in his van and headed to our neighborhood immediately. It was like sending up the bat signal! The entire experience was great. Our door frame was badly damaged and our crooked old house did not make for an easy job lining up the new locks, but Bob stayed with it, made our door secure and even fixed some of the damage to the frame. He was also kind to our curious 3 year old who insisted on staring at him almost the entire time. Having a great experience is always important, but especially on upsetting days like this. Wish there was a higher rating available. This company is a gem.... honest, prompt and professional. When using a locksmith you are usually in a stressed state but the gentleman (whose name I never got) calmed me down and did the job with the minimum amount of fuss and at a very, very reasonable rate considering that it was way past normal business hours.
