N was out of town and the stopper to the new bath stopped working. Well, I had a hard day and couldn't wait for him to get home . I needed to soak and sip a glass of chardonnay right away. I found this hardware store not far from the casa and loved the name (I'm a baller so I should only shop at Baller's!) I zipped over, found parking in the little lot on the side and scooted in. They were SOOOO helpful. I took a picture of my drain with my iPhone 11 and they helped me figure out what size stopper I needed and even gave me instructions on how to put it in. For a variety of moral and emotional reasons, I hate shopping at Home Depot. The experience of wandering aimlessly through the aisles leaves me exhausted and miserable. I usually leave disappointed, unable to find the wretched toilet fixture or screwdriver bit that brought me there. So imagine my relief at discovering Baller Hardware. This True Value store has just about everything you need for household repairs. There's paint, lumber, electrical, even gardening, all within a few steps from the front door. On my last visit, for instance, I bought a gallon of custom semi-gloss paint, a can of butane, a kitchen funnel and a flower pot. Weird, but easily accomplished. The staff was tremendously helpful in guiding me around the store and I was out in about 20 minutes. No torturous scavenger hunt necessary. Parking is relatively easy in their narrow lot and Tomato Pie Pizza Joint is right across the street. It also feels nice to support a local business in Silver Lake instead of a hulking behemoth. Great neighborhood hardware store. I am not even that repair-it-all of a human, but I spend a lot of time here relatively speaking, because I know they'll have what I want, and I am blissful to not have to go to Home Depot. It's a nice place with fair prices. Not the super widest selection I suppose, but one of everything you need. There are one or two dudes that work there that aren't that friendly, but they are young dudes working at a hardware store what do you expect. And if you catch them at the right moment they'll be very helpful. Anyways. Down to earth and helpful. Yes, you will have to ask for a hand rather than expect someone to phonily seek you out, but really I believe that's how hardware stores should be. Swallow your pride and ask. read more

Bought a 1938 "fixer" of a house; I knew what I was getting into with it. I love Baller Hardware. Sometimes I have time to meander and look around at stuff and sometimes I just need the ______ (tool, gizmo, screw, doodad, whatever) fast. Everyone working at Baller knows where everything is. Everyone at Baller is helpful. Let's say you don't really know what you want? But you can kinda describe what it needs to do, sort of... They can help. Finally, if they don't carry something, they'll just say it, and then recommend another place to try. And they won't try to sell you something you don't need, they find exactly what you do need. In fact, I've had them say, "Yeah you could do THAT, but THIS would probably be a whole lot easier (and cheaper)." Good luck with that at Home Depot. Good luck actually finding someone to actually help you at Home Depot. I've noticed some people on Yelp suddenly turn into a Ralph Nader or Pauline Kael with an ax to grind doling out an "I'll-show-you" review, trying be sharp-witted like a big dick with a little penis. I love this store. I wish I had a house or was allowed to tear up my apartment so I could buy more stuff from them. As it is, they're my go-to for the domestic hardware and cleaning supplies that I need, and today they REALLY saved my life. I sheared off a bolt by using the wrong torque specs. This bolt happened to be for the oil filter screen cover on my motorcycle that I need to get to work tomorrow. Thank God I live across the street from a hardware store and moreso that this particular store is well staffed by hardware/customer service genies. Who still help you even if you rudely interrupt them while they're doing something on the computer because you're in a panic kind of. Anyway the man eyeballed it and took about 60 seconds (walking to the aisle) to find the exact matching replacement bolt I needed from a selection of fastener's at least as comprehensive (probably more so) than Home Depot's. He ued a nut to verify for my conscience but he was dead on. The equivalent trip to the HD on Santa Monica would have taken over an hour and they probably would have been out of stock because that place is just bad luck I think. So I asked for some Allen-head replacements for a few Phillip's screws I had with me and he summoned those up in short order as well. I bought some other stuff I "needed" (I will in the future!) because that kind of service deserves more than the couple bucks the bolts cost me. Keep the Silver in Silver Lake! Shop at Baller! Just ask them where what you want is I swear they know every inch of the shelves... read more

I really believe in supporting your local 'mom and pop' hardware places whenever possible, particularly when the place is a neighborhood institution (i think they've been serving the neighborhood since like 1959). as we all know places like this are increasingly run out of business by the large volume and lower prices at the Lowes and Home Depots of the world. that said, for those smaller ticket items i try to throw some business to these guys rather than head to the cavernous and impersonal warehouse hardware stores. also, the folks are friendly and helpful here and they have key duplication in the back which is nice. i took off one star b/c the prices are a little higher here and you don't get the wide range of inventory you might get elsewhere. give 'em a try. read more

They were super nice and took the time to understand the specifications of my odd request with an assortment of metal pieces. This is place is great. It has a great vibe to it. Feels very 'small town' and local. But more importantly, they have a great staff. You don't have wander up and down isles trying to find what you need. There is always someone knowledgabel there who will take you to what you are looking for. Yes, Home Depot might be the largest and most ubiquitous of hardware stores, but they're certainly not the best. That title belongs to hardware stores like Baller Hardware. They don't sell steel girders, or innumerable varieties and metric tons of cements in stock, or a forest worth of lumber in their racks. Instead, they offer a smart, wide ranging selection of things people need most, and one of the most helpful set of employees I've encountered, anywhere. Earlier today, during a construction emergency and in dire need of a precision cut piece of plywood and a 2x4, I started driving to Home Depot - knowing that I'd probably have a hard time hunting for a tech to help me cut plywood, knowing that it might take a long time just to get the sheet out of the racks. It could take an hour or more.... But then I thought of BALLER HARDWARE. In 20 minutes I was back at home with the things I needed. Job done. Now, THAT'S service. read more

My experience is that Baller usually is nearly the same price and sometimes even beats Home Depot. If you're like me and don't know how to do everything yourself, these guys are great. When I enter any hardware store I am both overwhelmed and bored at the same time. That said, when I have to go one, Baller is my first stop. The service is prompt and courteous. My first visit here was when I had just moved to the neighborhood and I was pretty sure that my cat had shimmied through a plumbing access spot. Baller is fully baller. Everytime I've gone, it's been easy to get help from staff, and they've been consistently very, very helpful. I went in for a weird garden hose question, and the staff member I talked to listened to me thoroughly, took something out of the package to make sure it would work and tested it. I asked another staff member a question after he asked if he could help, and he was quick and knowledgeable too. Their sales staff are some of the most knowledgeable in all the items they carry. Not the cheapest hardware store but if you look at the parking lot. many professional carpenters, painters, handyman come in and out. A mark of confidence I would think. this place has saved me many many times on fix it projects without driving miles to ge to a Home Depot. Love Baller Hardware, been a customer for as long as they've been in business. Stopped in this morning for one item. There was a woman who seemed to be 'window shopping', and after I found my item, proceeded towards the register. This woman was in front of me, looking at everything, then stopped just before the register, and was looking at items on the counter. I waited, she kept looking, and since she hadn't placed anything in front of the cashier, and the cashier hadn't rung up anything, I moved around her. The cashier got offended, like I had committed a heinous crime. I apologized to both and stated my reasoning. The woman was gracious, but the cashier was very stand offish. Baller is one of those old school neighborhood businesses where the staff takes the time to answer your questions and walk down the aisle with you and help you locate that hard-to-find screw or washer. Yesterday, I finally got around to fixing the pull on my wife's antique dressing table. I took the whole drawer in with me, and asked a staff member to help me locate the needed parts. Baller is AMAZING. I just bought a thermocouple from them for $7.50. It was $9.70 at Home Depot for the same exact thing. Not only that, but at Home Depot I wandered the halls and asked 4 different workers where I could find a thermocouple, and was given 2 quizzical looks and one flat out "we don't have it." I ran to Baller and was given all the help I needed. They spent 15 minutes with me because my old thermocouple had broken inside the assembly and wouldn't come out, and they removed it for me. I am so grateful for their service, and amazed that they had over 3 times the selection that Home Depot had. I had thought that Baller would be pricey, considering its location. But it is a great, cheap, wonderful hardware store, with everything you might possibly need. I will never ever waste my time in Home Depot again! read more
