Three cheers for Baller Hardware! Keeping it going through the pandemic with friendly, personal neighborhood service. They will take your order by phone, pay by card, and have it ready for pickup; call when you get there and someone in a mask runs the bag out to your car. No contact! I recently built a garden gate from scratch, talked it through on the phone with Dave who cut the lumber and assembled the hardware for me. All perfect--and I could not have cut the lumber to perfectly equal sizes myself. Strong recommendation--these days I'm looking for stuff to do around the house and yard, and MUCH rather buy from my neighborhood super-service hardware store instead of Home Depot or other online sources. read more

I've been many times before. In my human life and my current state. I was immediately drawn to the sense of community that occupies the halls. Today however, I initially chose Home Depot. The air filters that I had to replace were the HD house brand, so I didn't think, and went there. BOOO!!!! Too many people. Terrible parking. Complete abandonment. And the only air filter in my size was far too expensive! Bah!! I got Baller Hardware on the horn, and they had what I needed at 1/3rd of the cost. I was a silly old fool to even think that the big box chain would be able to help me. I will always come here first. I also overheard their pickles are quite good! This place used to be terrific. No one listens. No one cares. I left there stunned how they answered questions I never asked and shooed me off of them quickly. I can't help but think it's because they just don't know anything but I do guarantee you they know nothing about customer service. People used to know things here. I drove all the way from mid-city pretty confident I wouldn't be wasting my only break from work but it was a total bust. No matter how many times I asked for a threaded tap-in insert and a screw that would fit it, the salesman directed me to extraction tools I didn't want or ask for. When I told him that I keep having to repeat my need over and over since I came into the store, he (guess what age he was?) acted abused and needed to shut me down. And hand me off immediately. Not interested in listening. It wasn't like , "Let me get someone who can help you." It was like "Eff you". People used to know things. I believe those days are truly gone. read more

Wonderful service! I needed two, just two, quart-sized wide-mouth Mason jars. Only two. When I saw cases of 12 I figured my choice was to buy a case or leave empty-handed. Neither would have made me happy. But the person behind the counter readily agreed when I asked if she could break open the case and sell me two. Amazing! Baller's is the anti-Home Depot. So I am starting to be more hands on in fixing things around the house. I like to shop at small businesses so instead of going to Home Depot I came here. I was helped by a gentleman who was very nice and patient. All I had was a picture on my cell phone of what the issue was. The only thing I think they need to improve is the cashier (lady with long messy hair) attitude. She didn't greet me and as I was going to ask something she cut me off to complain to another employee about a customer who returned something. She ignored me completely. Independently-owned Baller has never yet let me down. I've had them mix the same damned paint color ("Lentil," if you would like to know) four times now, and they've been courteous and non-mocking as they programmed their computer. I think they saved Lentil's CMYK code into their favorites, because they walk toward it and press two buttons while smiling at me. A mere two buttons - to mix such a lush color combination as Lentil? Good afternoon, I have never criticized or rated any place before. I guess this will be my first. I went in a couple of days ago and was received with an (intense vibe). I've lived in the east Hollywood/ silver lake area my whole life. I would've never thought to encounter something like this. Once entering the store I felt like I was being followed by every step I took. Once I stopped a person told me. "I bet you thought I was following you." Surprised by the comment I went and replied "no? I thought you just needed to pass by?" Later when I went to go pay for my supplies I noticed none of the cashiers looked pleased to take me in and charge me for the item. I was starting to feel excluded for some reason. I absolutely love this place. They have more than you can imagine and everyone is super helpful. Was looking for 1/4" thick plexiglass and sure enough. Honestly I think you can build a house with everything they have in here. I got a nice grill here last year and a solid ladder the year before that. I've this horrible and unfortunately more than an occasional bad practice of shutting my apartment door behind me while in automatic mode. That is, I shut the door locked behind me without intending to do so and most certainly without having grabbed the keys. So after a miserable night wrangling with my landlord, who I discovered much to my dismay did not have a spare set to my apartment and minus half a Benjamin, I resolved to get made extra sets of house keys. However, there was the matter of my abhorrence for the never pleasant drive from Sunset Junction to Home Depot, and the idea of making that trip multiple times in case the keys weren't cut properly was enough to keep me dragging my feet. That is until I noticed completely by chance that there was a nifty little hardware store tucked away on the corner of Tracy and Hyperion in Silver Lake. Hoorah! A classic neighborhood hardware store: cramped/cozy, dusty/charming, and - as a customary corollary to such places - welcoming, laid back, and knowledgeable (if not always the most prompt since always short-staffed) staff. They even have a modest parking lot for those of us who loathe to pay for metered parking. Anyhow, long story short, they only had blanks for 2 of the three keys I needed cut. I've gone back weekly since to get the remaining key cut there rather than at Home Depot, where I'm sure there'd be blanks but also annoying cars aplenty. That I've stuck to waiting for Baller to get the final blank in stock is a testament to how much I prefer patronizing my little neighborhood establishment to braving the headache that is the trek to Home Depot in Hollywood. OK, I'll fess up, a part of the reason is that I like to go into hardware stores and look at the wares, fancying myself the very excited new owner of a promising Silver Lake fixer-upper scored at a fantastic bargain. Neighborhood hardware store. Friendly helpful staff that make you feel like you can DIY! Easy returns. Affordable prices! I was building a set for a short film in my living room and i needed a couple of tools and not only did they let me borrow a power tool and a saw for a couple of days but they also helped me figure out the easiest way to build it! Home Depots may appear to be more convenient but nothing beats good customer service and local neighborhood charm. I have nothing but raving reviews and feedback about Baller hardware and its employees. Plenty of parking spaces out front and even when crowded the line is never too long. They don't give you a hard time for returns and exchanges. read more

I've been here 2x in less then a month and both times I didn't find what I was looking for or had any customer service. I'm sure I might come back again in the future but I can't figure out a reason to any time soon. On the last visit here last week. My wife and I were in need to get some keys made. My wife wanted to get a set of the custom prints on them, and they guy said she couldn't get them made with out giving her a reason just saying "no, you can't do those", until after we found out later on our own that's it's the type key that didn't match. I also, needed to get a spare of my car key, and they didn't have a match to my Nissan. When I asked if they would expect any soon, or recommend what I could do he just said he didn't know and walked away. I like to support mom and pop shops, and I just hope that the next time I come over my experience will be better. read more

Every time I come here I have instant regrets and question why I continue to do so. I live in the area, so its mostly convenience but the employees here are SO RUDE that I vow to go to Home Depot the next time I need something. Every male employee I've ever encountered or asked a question acts like my presence in their store is the all time worst annoyance. One time I was asking about purchasing additional drill bits (for the drill I admittedly don't know how to use that well) and the sales guy said that he knows how to use a drill because he "went to college". (He looks like a haggard Ben Franklin, in case you don't want to run into him yourself) Another time I was asking an employee if they did custom wood work (not making a custom cabinet or anything - I needed something very simple built for set construction) and he simply shook his head. Didn't even give me the energy to say "no" or enthusiasm to suggest anyone in the area he remotely knew of. These guys act like they're god's gift to the hardware world, and I love to shop local but in this case at least the employees at Home Depot (while not knowledgeable) are friendly! If you dare to come here know exactly what you need, keep your head down and god forbid don't ask anyone anything! read more

Big time meh. I've gone to Baller for supplies on two household projects: repairing a hole in the drywall, and sanding/painting/resurfacing some old tables. The guys on the floor recommended what wound up to be the wrong materials for both projects. That alone is enough to warrant a less-than-happy review, but also ... -There's an employee who's continuously engaged in a heated conversation with himself. Creepy. -I'm almost sure another one of the guys who helped me had crapped his pants earlier in the day judging by the smell. read more

A hardware store with customer service?! It still exists, I say! Perhaps all the 'discount' warehouse style stores have blinded us with their constant ads in order to distract us from the fact that they provide little to no customer service! As a woman it's annoying enough going into a "man's store" that assumes you don't know how to do anything. HD and the like say they are there to help, but they just like to tell you what number aisle and let you trudge down a 1/4-mile long corridor looking for that one small PVC fitting. Meanwhile, in the time it takes me to get the attention of a big hardware store's customer service, I can just go to Baller and speak to the owner or one of the super helpful staff that KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT and will help you regardless of whether you are short a Y chromosome. Recently I came in half out of my mind because the rains had caused a mini-flood in my apartment. A guy at Baller steered me to the right caulking for the job and showed me how to get it to work with the caulk gun. Add some lighthearted 'hardware banter' and I was out of there for about $11 and the confidence in being able to go home and handle the problem. I can't say that with the giant hardware chain. I'm no hardware expert, and don't enter such a store frequently enough to comment on pricing, but the customer service is great, and it's nice to know I'm supporting a local business that actually does something to earn it. read more

If you're able to wrangle one of the guys hanging around in the back of the store, you usually can get some kind of service. They really put the "curt" in courtesy though. Since, I'm a forgiving type and do want to support local businesses, I return again and again with no questions asked. However, last week, I happened to visit The Home Depot in Hollywood and was treated with a real type of courtesy (no curt here) and an overall pleasant experience. Today, I stopped by Baller, was ignored by the floor staff and was basically rebuffed by the young woman at the register. I'm not going to head back there too quickly. Although, I live in Silver Lake, I think I might just be taking the extra trek to Hollywood to avoid the attitude. They have a sign on the side of their building that says "Keep the Silver in Silver Lake. Shop Locally", or some such words. I'd be happy to shop locally if I felt that my presence was acknowledged and that I was treated with a little bit of respect. Just a little is all I ask! read more

Baller has everything I need in a hardware store. With a name like Baller, how could they not? Helpful staff, shower heads, three to two prong plug converters (damn old outlets!), faucet aerators, key cutting, reasonable prices...When I walk into a hardware store I want to get in and get out as quickly as possible - believe it or not, hardware shopping is not my favorite pass time! Crazy, I know. You were looking at my pictures and thinking "This girl loves to get handy!" Anyway, the staff here made my visit to one of my least favorite types of stores rather pleasant. This place is small enough to be easy to digest and still has everything you need. I will definitely be back for all of my hardware needs. read more

I love this place! It has everything I need so I don't have to go to home depot which is great since the one closest too\ me is kind of trashy. Everyone here is super friendly and they have their art supply store right across the street. I've gone here a few times to get some wood cut for closest and shelves. Good selection of paint/spray paints/stains. The only thing I couldn't find was individual nails - they have screws but not nails from what I could tell. But honestly maybe that's not even a thing - nails never sold separately. read more

I have come here over the last year to buy an array of things: garden tools, decorative duct-tape, garbage bin, screws, plant spray and food, spray paint, cleaning products etc - even a wooden pallet once. Baller Hardware: 1) is extremely well stocked 2) has competent and helpful staff who have time for you 3) has very good prices 4) saves me SO MUCH TIME because almost all the time I have to spend searching for things and waiting for staff attendance at, say Home Depot is eliminated Other than that the atmo is cool and friendly and, like many people, I prefer a small neighborhood shop to the big chains.
