The Dr. said when I was born that I had the smallest feet he ever saw. They were also the widest. Old boyfriends called them paddles. They are hard to fit but of course I love shoes. I'm also a big (non-pro) dancer. Never sit down. Made the tryouts for the Pennsylvania Ballet School but wanted to be a cheerleader. Fast forward 30 years --- a few months ago I was on the hunt for really comfortable, stylish shoes for my daughter's wedding. There are non for wide short feet. Then I thought ballroom dance! The staff at Ballroom Connection was very accommodating and informative about the correct sizing for my foot type. The specific practice shoe I wanted was not available at the time of the fitting, but they kindly offered to add me to their call-back list to notify me when the size was in stock. A few weeks later then updated me when the shoe was available, was able to immediately order over the phone and received the pair in a timely manner. Trying out the pair I initially had doubts about the slightly loose fit at my heels, but another phone call with Stephanie clarified the best way to make the shoe fit better with narrow heels. Second time I come to buy dance shoes here. Never again. First time I bought two pairs for my mom spending $500. Had a completely different experience. Today the employees were Rude and impatient. I was about to buy a pair or crown shoes, but that particular pair was very poorly made with glue coming out all around the soles. The lady who was bringing me shoes to try was clearly annoyed with me trying on a number of pairs (I have narrow feet). I asked her whether she had another pair of the same crown shoes in my size and she said NO these shoes are made by hand so they won't be perfect like a machine. I said well the ones you have on display are made very well. She said it's not our fault and they were made by another employee at the crown company. How I wish Stephanie and her store were located close to me instead of on the opposite coast. It's so very difficult to know what shoes to buy when you can't try them on in person. In search of replacement practice, rhythm, and smooth shoes that will allow me to comfortably dance with recovering plantar fasciitis in one foot and a developing big toe bunion and arthritis in the other, Stephanie couldn't have been more helpful. She responded to my message with a phone call and we spent more than half an hour figuring out what shoes might work best for me. It was an education in how shoes should fit. And she even gave me advice on orthotics for my practice shoes, ones she has used herself for years. A woman barged by us and opened the door and went inside, closing the door behind her and not saying one word to us. A bit confused, we let ourselves in. Then I went back for standard shoes since our studio required that we take both Latin and standard. The staff here were so helpful and always tried to help me find the perfect size. The dance studio where we went to start learning how to ballroom dance suggested that I buy dancing shoes. I came here since it was near by. Overall experience was that they did were snooty to non-competitors. Reasons: 1. I asked to have strapped heels and the S.A says "oh yeah I would never give a non-competitor strapless heels" 2. I said that the shoes he GAVE ME to try on did not fit and S.A says "oh well these are for competitors so they would have been able to wear these". However they were loose! 3. Kept mentioning that because we were non-competitors in almost every conversation when we were looking or trying on shoes. SIZE SHAMERS! This store has an employee that told me that there are alot of big girls like me coming in lately. As I tried on shoes, he called my feet "BEEFY", Yes...like a cow! My fiance and I are preparing a first dance for our wedding and Arthur Murray recommended that we visit Ballroom Connection for shoes. I had an amazing experience thanks to Chris. He was super helpful in helping me choose the style that would be most appropriate for the dance we are performing. When I mentioned this was for my wedding and that I was looking for the highest heel possible, he pulled a shoe from the back room that ended up being perfect! He even took the time to explain how the shoe should fit and feel and had recommendations for sizing. They didn't have my size, but were able to special order it. Delivery was quick (about one week) and they didn't charge for shipping. Upon delivery, they called me to pick up the shoes and had me try them on to make sure the fit was perfect. I am a professional ballroom dance instructor and former United States Rhythm Champion. This location is where I have bought my shoes and other teaching supplies since the very first day of my career and is where I have sent dozens of happy students during those years. One of the best things Ballroom Connection has going for it is Stephanie herself. She is very knowledgeable and connected to the ballroom community in the greater Bay Area. She provides good information as far as how the shoe should fit, what kind of shoe you should have, the difference between brands, and much more. When coming in, I would recommend letting her know who your instructor is and where you are taking lessons. This already will give her an idea of what your needs are better than you may realize and as a result, she will give you your best options. As someone who is also very connected to much of the ballroom community, I can tell that those who did not have the most optimal of experiences may not have enough initial information before coming in, leaving them unable to appreciate and understand what the store has to offer. Shoes come in all shapes, sizes, widths, heel heights (especially for women), and even colors. Besides fashion purposes, these details change what the shoe is made for (Latin versus Ballroom, Social versus competitive, beginner versus experienced). Want to try out social dancing? Great. Stephanie will bring out comfortable and flexible brands with low-heels in the color of your choice. Need a pair of competitive dance shoes? Out come the skin-toned, higher-heeled, form-fitting shoes. Yes, your first pair of shoes will be uncomfortable no matter what. You get used to it, I promise. Yes, you will probably need a shoe brush. Overall, this good base of knowledge has made it easy to put my trust in Stephanie to take care of all of my students. As far as brands go, you will especially find a large selection of Go Go Dance, which are not really my favorite, but make a good choice for beginners, and Stephanie's which I usually encourage students with long-term goals to invest in. Ballroom dancing tends to be pricy in general and being thrifty with the shoes get you nowhere as you need to see this as an investment (would you give your racehorse crappy horseshoes?) Stephanie's are my go-to choice for beginners as they're more well-made compared to their Go Go counterparts and in the more recent years, have started to be more creative with their designs, bringing them closer to par with the European brands you may find. For serious competitive dancers, you are in luck. Ballroom Connection carries some of my recommended brands, including Ray Rose, and more recently, Aida's, which used to be very difficult to obtain. These two brands are particularly unique for being more accommodating towards those with different needs (e.g. wide feet, different heels, a darker finish, etc). Other European brands such as Supadance and Internationals can also be found here, but the aforementioned two are my personal recommendations. The small practice floor is definitely a nice bonus as it lets you try out the shoe on actual floor. Remember, you need these shoes to do more than just look pretty on your feet. You can also find other supplies, such as dance manuals (which teachers use for their certification exams), DVDs (these tend to pricey anywhere you look. I also would recommend using the DVDs to supplement private lessons versus replacing them. I promise you, that never works. You need someone to give you feedback if you don't know what you're doing and a DVD can't do that), practice skirts and pants, and more. For people who plan on coming in for the first time, have your instructor give you information on the shoe you need. Assuming that they are knowledgeable enough, they should tell you exactly what to look for in detail, thus making your trip and experience and optimal one. Can't remember it? Write it down. They do have a wide selection of professional ballroom dance DVDs for any dance you can think of - some are around $25 and the more advanced detailed ones are around $50 so don't expect to find anything cheap here. They definitely did not know anything about Ballroom Connection. Ballroom Connection, although small, has a great selection of high quality shoes. I've been to other stores that have a huge selection, with very poor quality shoes and service. The owner of the store is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Ask her about fit, style and comfort. She will tell you exactly like it is. I would only purchase shoes at this location. She also sells cd's and dvd's, but personally I think it's a rip-off...so don't even bother. It's way over priced. Otherwise, the experience and selection alone for shoe shopping is exceptional. Just had the best experience buying west coast swing shoes here. I called ahead to see if they had the models and colors in stock. They even remembered me when I showed up hours later. They gave me 4 pairs to try on to find the perfect fit, and when the straps were too loose, they cut extra holes in it to help them fit better. Very friendly, attentive salesperson. Even though there were several other people there trying shoes on, he was still on point with all of us, remembering exactly which size each of us was trying on. I had a little different experience than the reviews above. The lady was pretty aloof. Helpful, but aloof. There was not a lot of selections for shoes. On top of that, if you take a closer look, some look a little defective. The Go Go i was going to purchase had really bad stitching that came off easily. On 3 of the shoes I was considering, the holes on the straps were very crooked -- to the point that it was so close to the edge as if going to break when you dance in it. Also, on one of the shoe, there was a run-off stitch that went across the side of the shoe! I asked for another pair, but the lady said they only carried one shoe of each kind in the backroom. (That is kind of hard to believe) If you go to Amazon, Dance4Less.com, etc. there is A LOT more variety and better quality. I got cuter Go Go's for $15 less plus $5 shipping. It shipped fast too! Ordered it on Monday, and I recieved it that Friday. The Go Go's didn't have the bad stitchings or the crooked strap holes. No run-away stiches either! Very comfy. This makes me kind of wonder if the store was selling defects... Anyone else noticed these defects? Or maybe it was the luck of the draw. *shrugs* read more
