Not sure where to start because I'm very excited about the whole thing. First, I was a huge fan of the previous place in this location Cheng Hing and was devastated when they closed. As far as quality and location Hing couldn't be beat, and I hadn't really found a suitable alternative....until now. I did a Yelp search for Chinese and Bamboo Bistro came up. When I saw the address I audibly cheered. The next thing I noticed was the Eat 24 option. I checked it out and before I knew it, I had ordered my food from my iPod. What a time to be alive! So there I was, 15 minutes later, standing in the former Cheng Hing, now Bamboo Bistro, picking up my food. Not having spoken to another soul. It was pretty cool. The verdict: Bamboo is a beautiful spot, in a great area of Swarthmore. The staff was helpful and the guy at takeout even gave me some tips for using Eat 24. Another thing I was excited about was that they had a menu item very similar to Dan Dan Noodles (Hot and Spicy Szechuan Noodle) and while it's the best I can do out here in the burbs, Han Dynasty and Dan Dan have nothing to worry about. My next criteria is dumplings and Bamboo gets a 7 out of 10. Not quite the doughy balls I like but more than passable. I didn't really get a main meal this time but I like all of the options, from Chinese to Japanese to Thai, I should have plenty of time to make a decision. First time stopping in. Did my usual "just order simple things" for my first try. Hot and sour soup, fried pork dumplings, and pork fried rice. The soup was pretty much perfect, for my tastes. I haven't been to this restaurant since it has changed ownership and name. And I was overly pleased! My parents, niece and sister ate a "Early Bird" kind of dinner Sunday afternoon. The waitress was hilarious and ever so accommodating. She kept referring to my parents as the young man and woman and each time brought us laughter all around the table. We snacked on some edamame and spring rolls why my niece slurped up some comforting Won Ton Soup. I had the Chicken Drunken Noodles(extra spicy). Chicken & Noodles were cooked to perfection. Ok, so! When I first came into this place I was kind of excited because how crowded it was and how long the wait was and people were still trying to wait just to eat there. I went on cinco de mayo day but I doubt that had anything to do with how crowded it was. Anyway as a designer I cannot stand the way they had this restaurant setup they did have a big party but it looked like chairs and tables were anywhere the servers couldn't move around as much and I know it's a family own business which is great but all there kids were working and you can tell they needed some help!! It was literally a mess they didn't look organize they just looked like they were doing the damn thing! Ok enough ranting now onto to the food: I had order shrimp tempura it looked really pretty took forever to come to the table but then come to find out it was garnish with fish eggs I cannot stand fish eggs and for cooked sushi it shouldn't be in there so I had to returned that, I saw the sushi chef get mad so I told the server to take it off my check and I order the chicken lo me in noodles (by the way it was amazing!!!!!) I order the normal chicken with broccoli all I can say the broccoli was good the sauce was great but chicken!!! tasted like I was eating another animal if you know what I mean I couldn't trust it I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt but that texture of the chicken was just not good. So insisted that they take that off my check me I ordered the shrimp and broccoli it was good but wasn't great it wasn't something that made me want to come back! This place is pretty good. The sushi is alright, way better than any other place nearby (although perpetually half off), although not the best in the world. The Chinese food is pretty good - the fried rice is definitely their best dish. The peking duck is really good - I recommend it. The mochi is also really good. Also, the service is great. Prices are great for the serving size. This is a definite favorite of ours. It's great to have a good option for cheap Chinese. We ordered takout from here and were pleasantly surprised. The dumplings were very good although they tasted more like gyoza. The spicy Szechuan noodles were spicy enough but could have used a bit more seasoning. The standard Kung Pao chicken and General Tso's were more than acceptable. The sesame chicken tasted very similar to the General Tso's with sesame seeds and not as spicy. The Yu Shang chicken was good and chock full of wood ear and ginger. Love this new addition to Swarthmore. We have ordered take out from here many times and were so happy to have such a great Asian restaurant so close by. My husband prefers traditional Chinese fried rice and chicken dishes and I love the sushi. It's a nice variety of countries and cuisines. It's easy to order for a group since there's something for everyone. My vegetarian friends love the food. I've had lunch inside the restaurant a couple of times and it has a nice calm atmosphere. The dumplings are simply delightful and the pork buns are filled to the brim with juicy meaty goodness. The sweet-and-sour chicken is super good and the wonton soup is made to perfection. Sadly, there isn't much for dessert. Bamboo bistro isn't a tourist destination but it is a great place for the locals to come and get a bite to eat. This restaurant also has a great vibe to it. I've been getting more and more food from here lately. My go to is the spicy tuna and spicy crab roll. I get the hot and sour soup which is a true hot and sour soup. It's not too sour and not sweet, unlike other places. I got the general tso's chicken and omg, it was really good. I hate getting chicken that is questionable but not at this place. I think the Tri-Asian menu (Chinese, Japanese, Thai) leans more towards those looking to get a tasting of mainstream dishes from Chinese cuisine and it does very well at that. Japanese - The sushi bar offers some common varieties of rolls/sashimi while the kitchen can serve udon. All ok/as good as you would find from similar sushi venues in Delco. Lastly, there is a very small offering of Thai dishes. Didn't try so cannot speak to them. I feel that for a dine-in experience, the choice and quality of appetizers is very good and entrees reviewed as above (your tastes/opinions may vary). The tea they serve is excellent! This spot is our new go to Chinese restaurant! I heard it can get crowded with college kids but I've always managed to avoid the crazy crowds. They have great food, and I love the miso soup as well as their pad Thai. Some Chinese restaurant food gives me a massive headache afterwards but this place does not. We have loved everything we have tried so far and will continue to go back. Only bummer is metered parking can be inconvenient at times but it doesn't bother me much. read more
