This place is such a find! Our waitress was the daughter's owner and she took care of our every need. We were not sure what to order and she was very helpful and suggested the oxtail, curry shrimp and we also opted for the conch ceviche! The food was definitely the best Caribbean food I've had in Florida and even better than most I've had in the Caribbean. The food is both delicious and inventive. The outside sitting area is cozy and romantic. The food was made fresh as soon as we ordered, so it took a bit longer than a normal restaurant. However, the wait was worth having completely freshly prepared meal. No reheating frozen food here. Everything is made after you order it. I really recommend the curried chicken. I was already full from wonderful appetizers (jerk chicken quesadillas and fried eggplant), but the curried chicken was so good that I ate every last bit. This is a quaint little restaurant. We have walked by it many times and it's always busy. Tried to go once but there was a very long wait. There's only about 15 tables of seating. So we made a reservation the next time and got the table by the bar inside. It's run by a family and they are very friendly with each patron. The service is slower, but I'm used to that from visiting islands. Island life is slow and relaxed. We had the ceviche to start and it was amazing. If you can't handle too spicy, I don't suggest trying it. It is spicier than most ceviches, but very good! We also had meatball appetizer and they were juicy and succulent. The pulled pork entree is also great. The owner came around after dinner offering complimentary shots and talking to us about where they are from and where we were from. Great Caribbean atmosphere with easy access from Atlantic Avenue. My husband and I ordered the conch fritters, jerk chicken and oxtail. The conch fritters had a light crispy texture, and came with an AMAZING dipping sauce. The tempura-like coating was well seasoned, but left me wondering, "Where's the conch?"! The pea-size conch was over powered by the tempura. The jerk chicken was less than noteworthy since the meat was dry and the seasoning failed to penetrate the meat thoroughly. The OXTAILS stole the show. They came in a plentiful entree size. The rue was finger-licking good. The meat fell off the bone, and melted in my mouth. My husband had never had oxtail before, and after tasting mine, has vowed to use these for future comparison. Needless to say, he will be hard pressed to find a place that does it better. An amazingly friendly, delicious experience. We made reservations for Friday night - I couldn't find parking and the owner moved his car so I could park right out front. We were greeted and treated like family. Throughout the meal we were present with THREE complimentary little dishes. Everything, and I mean everything, was absolutely amazing. The basa fish in the banana leaf was rich and flavorful yet light with fresh veggies - it tastes like a warm hug :) the goat curry was super tender and tasted great, not gamey at all. We got the conch fritters and double-fried plantains. Both were fried yet light and served with incredibly tasty sauces. I had the calypso lemonade which was quite refreshing and not overly sweet. There was also a "secret" ingredient which tasted like vanilla - maybe I'll guess it one of these days :) We had a leisurely meal and spent a lot of time chatting with the owners. Like the others say, family owned small business, nice people. We asked what the most popular item was and what our waitress recommended and it was the oxtails. Unfortunately neither one of us eats meat so we didn't get to enjoy the favorite which I usually like to do. Instead we split the eggplant appetizer which was good and super garlicky, it could have been improved with a touch of salt and some acid, maybe lime. Then we split the coconut tofu which was crunchy but bland and with a sauce that did not taste homemade but was ok.(trader joes fans would know it). Then we got the market priced Monkfish which was sliced thin and was not clear to be monkfish (I saw the same dish come out to 4 tables and all the fish looked to be the same?) the sauce was coconut milk and spices and it was cooked in a banana leaf with Caribbean spices. Amazing food and the friendliest owners I have ever met. They sent out a garlic bread and eggplant appetizer because they knew we were vegetarians who wouldn't eat the meatballs. They also sent over delicious mango salads. We had the Basa in banana leaf and the jerk tofu. The food was amazing. The owners both came out to talk to us and get to know us. We felt like we were with old friends enjoying a delicious meal. The owners also brought us a shot of rum, which was actually quite yummy. The rum cake was also delicious. I feel like i've known the owners for the longest time. Donald and Beverley are really great and running a restaurant like this part time is remarkable! Bamboo Fire Cafe is another local gem. It's situated in the quaint Pineapple Grove District right off of Atlantic. A husband and wife team run the place. The wife cooks everything herself so you essentially are getting home-cooked food. Start with the jerk meatballs and conch appetizers. You won't be sorry. For the main meal there are lots of great choices. The curry chicken is fantastic as is the ox-tail. Sometimes they have special items that are not on the menu. I had shark (can't remember the type) there once. For a drink, you have to try their lemonade. There is some vanilla-like flavor in it that is hard to pin down but it's delicious. Finally, DO NOT leave Bamboo Fire Cafe without ordering the rum cake for dessert. You will get served a giant piece of delicious cake soaked in rum. It is the best I've ever had. Don't overlook this quaint little restaurant tucked away in a dark residential neighborhood! Or confuse it with the super bright, canopied restaurant next to it. They serve home-cooked style Caribbean food. We tried to order the wings but it wasn't available yesterday night so we settled for the curried chicken entree with braised veggies+sweet potato fries and a jerk chicken roti wrap. Both of us preferred the jerk chicken (loved the mixed spice rub and thought the chicken was very juicy and tender for breast meat). The curried chicken tasted like, well, chicken rubbed with dry curry. Neither of us could figure out what they braised the cabbage with (some sort of beef stock??) but it was delicious. So were the sweet potato fries + sauce. The roti wrap interestingly had ground up beans sandwiched between the layers. To be honest, the food was a 4, but the owners are so personable and friendly that I had to give them a 5. Both have day jobs (9-5!) so they open only at night from 6:30. You can tell both of them love what they do and eating their food gave me the same warm, fuzzy feeling that I get when eating my mom's cooking. :) read more

Really amazing food. If you go early, the food comes out very quickly. I went here for my birthday dinner and the experience was delightful. My meat eating companions ordered the oxtail and curry goat. I (a vegetarian) ordered jerk tofu. The oxtail and the curry goat are incredibly tasty. The consensus was that the oxtail was the favorite of the two meat dishes that were ordered. I LOVED the jerk tofu. It's very spicy but the dish was filled with vegetables and it tasted great! Each dish comes with a salad, rice, and plantains. The salad is a delicious balance between sweet and acidic. It's topped with cucumbers, mangoes, tomatoes, and a vinegary sweet dressing. The rice was one of my favorite parts of the meal. It's a Caribbean inspired fried rice that's flavored with spices and green onions. It's DELICIOUS. The plantains are caramelized just right- crunchy and a little burnt on the outside and soft and steaming on the inside. They provide a nice balance to offset some of the spice from your main dish. I used a $15 coupon from birthday comp which made the entire meal very affordable. As it was my birthday the owner gave our table a slice of rum cake heaped with whipped cream. If you love rum, you will love this cake. It's essentially a dense vanilla sponge with rum poured on top, served with a little vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on top. This is my favorite restaurant in South Florida. Period. We have been coming to this family-owned gem for the past five years and I can't get enough! The food is incredible, the owners and their daughter are lovely; I really can't say enough good things about this place. The goat curry and the cracked conch are out of this world. The food here is just done right. We had the eggplant dip, grilled conch, and curry chicken. Everything was AMAZING - I could eat the conch once a day for the rest of my life. What sets this place apart, however, is the service. As soon as we sat down, they served us some complimentary curry meatballs, and helped us with some suggestions on the menu. Beverly headed to the back to get to work on the food, (joking that if we "heard some banging, it was just her working on the conch" and we shouldn't worry) and Don stayed out to trade stories with us. A short time later, Beverly brought out our food, along with six different bottles of hot sauce (from her collection) she thought would go best with our meals. After dinner, we spent over twenty minutes just chatting with Don and Beverly. It felt like a restaurant should feel, but so rarely does anymore, especially in this area. Bamboo Fire is run by a family so my suggestion is to ask the owner what to get and know that it will be the right thing. I had half / half of the Oxtail special and pork ribs so I could try two dishes. The Oxtail is a five star homestyle dish that is tender, rich and complex. Pork ribs were so-so and should have been more crusty and tender. The free jerked meatballs for appetizer were savory and moist. Lots of hot sauces available to try and the beers in the fridge looked inviting. A friendly, little place that is open several days / week and worth your time for a Caribbean fix.
