Decent option for dinner. I stopped by earlier this week on my first night in town, and sat at the end of the bar. The bartender served me a Guinness (on tap, of course!) and then recommended the Monday Steak Night special ($60) - a prix fixe option which included a salad plus one of four types of steak, sides, and dessert. I opted for the house salad (with sherry vinaigrette dressing), the hangar steak (he was selling it hard!), sautéed green beans, and lemon meringue pie. The house salad was superb, with delicious chunks of goat cheese! I also enjoyed the sautéed green beans, loaded with sliced almonds and fresh garlic. The hangar steak was probably the most disappointing, and solely responsible for this review not earning 5 stars. I took half of it to go along with half of the green beans. The lemon meringue pie looked delicious but I could not eat another bite, so that also went into a to-go container. Back in my hotel room that night, working late as I was jet lagged, I ate that pie. OMG! PURE HEAVEN!! And the main reason this review earned 4 stars! Will be back for the salad and green beans and pie! And some Guinness on tap, of course!! read more

Overpriced chicken, a stellar mushroom side, and an aggressive exit strategy. After some custom cocktails nearby, our famished group headed to Rye for some dinner and dessert. The space was nice and clean, but unfortunately, the service and the "famous" main course didn't quite deliver a stellar performance. Our table was split--some wanted dinner, some wanted dessert. This apparently threw our waiter into a state of deep existential confusion. The Food: I ordered their "famous" fried chicken, customizing it to three thighs (which came with homemade pickles and a fantastic ham gravy). For $24, it wasn't bad, but it's definitely not "famous" for flavor--maybe just famous for the price tag. Honestly, I could have filled up at Popeyes for a fraction of the cost. Surprisingly, the absolute star of my meal was the side of sautéed mushrooms. It came with little pearl onions, shallots, and green peas. I topped it with some of my friend's arugula to make it fancy, and it was delicious. The Service (or lack thereof): Here's where it went downhill. The dessert order became a saga. Those who ordered sweets expected them to arrive with the mains, but we had to ask several times just to get them toward the end of the meal. By the end, our waiter seemed completely frustrated with our existence. He aggressively boxed up the remaining desserts and semi-forcefully shoved the credit card machine into our faces to shuffle us out the door. Great mushrooms, aggressive math at the end. Fantastic steak! We have been here a few times before and it was fine. We have always liked the deviled eggs and old square but a lot times we wouldn't stay for dinner. Just drinks on the patio when it's nice out. Last night we decided to try it for dinner. I got the strip steak medium rare with the cauliflower poldnaise. The steak was cooked perfectly and had a great earthy flavor. It had a nice butter on top and was the star of the evening. My wife and I ended up sharing it. I don't like cauliflower but my wife wanted it so I ordered it and it was ok. I could have eaten it, but it was a touch salty. My wife's salmon on the other hand was very mediocre. It was lifeless and not inspired or elevated. Drinks here are always good and they have a fun after dinner drink called coffee and cigarettes. It's better than it sounds and carries some nostalgia for me. The deviled eggs were good as always. Some of the best around, don't tell my mom. The place is loud inside. Our server was good and we have always had good service here. Overall we liked it and will come back, but we are sticking to the steak. Went for lunch on a Friday and there were plenty of tables available. Even though not full, the service was a bit slow and it took over 15 minutes to get drinks ordered. The food is down home comforting food with not a ton of options. There are any specials, only the menu which hasn't changed much since it opened. Not many lighter options, so go big or go home. Nice dining room with different table layouts for small to larger parties, and there is a very nice outdoor seating area. read more

It was two generally ok chicken strips, which could have used more flavor or seasoning and a big pile of spinach lightly dressed. It was definitely a lot louder than the one that was, but it was a Saturday night so I guess just something to deal with The whipped goat cheese and bread was amazing. The bread had a certain crunchiness that you would expect, and the goat cheese whipped with very unique flavor. The burger was outstanding, and although the order medium, it was almost like a medium rare I was a little bit, disappointed the duck, because although the flavor was good, it could've been a little bit more sumptuous. We ate at Rye tonight, a Tuesday night. This was my second time and again I chose the patio because of the noise level inside the restaurant. I was excited to learn that they are going to open up a small coffee/bake shop next to the restaurant soon. This time our party shared a couple order of cheese curds for an appetizer and then I had the cheesy grits. For dessert, I had them warm up a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie, and the others in the party tried fried chicken and the lemon meringue pie. Sides we added to the table were brussels sprouts and pommes anna. In hindsight, we should've got the mashed potatoes to use the ham gravy . The cheesy grits were a big hit. Besides the shrimp, the serving of pork was substantial and delicious. The fried chicken was well prepared and moist. I've been eating a lot of spicy chicken and would've preferred a little more seasoning, but it was solid. Feedback on the brussels sprouts was mixed. The pommes anna was a classic presentation. Those who had not had it before wished it had more of a cheesy sauce, but it was many layered and good. Everyone loved the desserts. And this is just a comment because I'm sure they would've accommodated if I asked, but Rye did not have salt and pepper shakers on the table. Service was fine. read more

I've tried Rye a few times and I just find it underwhelming. The latest trip was for brunch on Easter. I was hoping for somewhat of a special experience considering it was a holiday, but it was just a regular Sunday brunch at Rye with the regular brunch menu. While the breakfast I ordered was uniquely plated it was fairly average overall. The biscuits and gravy were fine, and the hash brown was really good and crispy but fairly greasy. I asked for crispy bacon which seemed to throw our server for a loop. The question clearly annoyed him and he replied with "I guess they can do that." When the food came, the bacon was limp and not at all crisp. This was also the experience with another person who ordered the same entree. As for the other people at our table, one said the spicy chicken sandwich was just "okay" and the other said the chicken salad was delicious. This was not the Easter experience we were hoping it would be. I doubt we will be back. It's a lovely restaurant and maybe we just ordered the wrong thing. I met a friend for happy hour. The Wedge Salad was excellent! Steve, the Bartender, was fantastic and could make an awesome Vesper. As for the other bartenders and servers on 1/21/26, I didn't feel welcomed. I asked for a water refill, and the server with the red hair returned, slammed down a "jar" of water, and left my glass unfilled. This was after I asked a couple of other servers for a refill, but they ignored me. I WILL return; however, all patrons should be treated the same, no matter how crowded or busy the restaurant is. read more

I've been to Rye many times and their food is good, but the service and ambiance was subpar during my recent visit. The Leawood location had always made me feel out of place unless I have a reservation, but I went during happy hour/a slow time of day, so I don't understand why they push so hard for a reservation or make me feel uncomfortable if I don't have one. There were a ton of empty tables and I was seated quickly...the food was good but our server hardly greeted us or checked on us. The happy hour menu had a lot of good drink and food options so that was nice. I guess I'd suggest Rye for breakfast or dinner, as long as you have a reservation. read more

Rye Leawood is fantastic! I got here a little before my party and got a table on the massive patio. The weather and the view were perfect for an evening outside. We put our order in and quickly had some drinks on the table. I started with an order of fried cheese curds. They were fantastic! The seasoning was spot on, the batter was nice and light, and the cheese tasted fresh. I followed that up with a Daily Grind Burger. It was meatier than I was expecting, but was cooked beautifully. The bun was light and fresh and the toppings were all delicious. I was so happily full afterwards! The only thing I would say wasn't perfect was the service. Our server was pretty inattentive. The Caesar salad literally had 4 croutons on the whole plate. I ordered a Benedict with hollandaise on the side. I never got the hollandaise, which is disappointing because that's why I ordered the dish; otherwise I can make poached eggs at home. Thinly sliced apples with caramel sauce and homemade whipped cream. It was served warm. The crust was so buttery and flaky. So good. Disappointed in lack of vegetarian and gf options. Ordered the wedge salad no bacon it was delicious and the crab ravioli with sweet potatoe puree. It was meh. Couldn't really taste or even see the crab. The sweet potatoe puree over powered all the other flavors. My friend had the chicken livers and she loves them. Stephan was our server. He was great. The clientele resembles the area and we went on a Friday night and it was extremely loud. We had no issues getting a table and got great service. Our waitress was great. The drinks were a little slow coming out though. I got an order of the sashito peppers, fried chicken, and bacon Mac and cheese. I dropped in at the Rye Leawood location, after a poor meal/service at another "popular" restaurant in Shawnee, Kansas. Check my profile for that 1 star review. This should have been my first pick of the night. Justin, the manager, sat me at a quiet table on a busy(ish) evening. It took longer than expected, but Michael the bartender/waiter came to the table with menus and water. Both were warm and friendly. I ordered the Blackened Koji chop and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The meat was moist, probably from a salt/sugar brine, tasty and not overly salty. It was delicious. I wanted dessert and ate only half the chop and asked Michael to box it up. Then I ordered the Blueberry streusel pie. He brought back my leftovers in a nice container and said the pie was on the way. I had to visit the bathroom and came back to an empty table. What? Justin the manager was nearby and I pulled him aside and said my leftovers were missing, I was still waiting for dessert, and I didn't even have anything to drink. He didn't skip a beat, apologized and said he would take care of me. Justin talked to Michael, and here's what happened next. Michael apologized and brought me new drinks, said the kitchen was making a whole new Koji chop for me to take home, brought my pie out, and all was good. When I went to pay, Justin said they were comping my dessert and apologized again. WOW. These two guys treated me like I was a CEO, made things right, and in the end earned my respect. I can't say enough good things about Rye Leawood, Michael, and Justin. Those guys deserve raises for their excellent service. Thank you. read more

What a lovely place! My dining companion, and I had a wonderful lunch here on a Thursday in the spring and it was delightful. Our server never gave us her name, but she was lovely. The ambience here is very fine and the food was just delicious! I would recommend Rye anyone. We both had the fried chicken salad to which they had recently added strawberries, in addition to the goat cheese, rhubarb, and spinach. it was lovely as worthy free range deviled eggs. This whipped goat cheese is incredible. Covered in honey and spread on a delicious piece of toast. Perfection. They serve it with some dressed greens with fennel and shallot and it's so so so good. The French Blonde, Gimme Shelter, Rhubarb Gin Spritz and Coffee & Cigarettes were the cocktails enjoyed by our table that we all tasted. Hadn't been here in over a year due to their egregiously inflated steak prices, even as of 3/3/2024. For brunch (ryekc.com) best value is the Rye Breakfast but this time I got the Steak and Eggs. Super flank steak, cooked to your liking, sliced into 10 pieces. Comes with a killer Pesto Sauce, and two eggs made how you want. Their coffee is tasty however you like your coffee, with or w/o sugar and cream. Their pie is better than Tippens/Pippens for those of you who recall that historical KC brand. My only beef with them, IMHO, is their 80$ steak prices, as of this writing, both J.Gilberts AND Capitol Grill are less expensive/ better value for the price. read more

Some time ago we visited Rye and enjoyed our meal so last night we went to Rye to celebrate my wife's birthday. We had considered going to Silo but they did not have a time available for our reservation that suited us so we elected Rye. The ambiance is very nice inside and our server was very pleasant. My wife ordered the shrimp with grits, my mother ordered the trout and I ordered the Kobi chop. We also ordered 3 sides, brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience and here's why. The mushroom dish was mushrooms that were breaded and then covered with a marinara sauce. They were soggy from all the sauce and the mushrooms must have either been tiny or over cooked because they seemed to be shrunken inside to the point where you could barely make out that they were mushrooms. Even the shape of each mushroom was strange not resembling mushrooms at all to the point where I wondered if we were served the correct dish. The brussel sprouts were like "mashed" brussel sprouts, loose leafs of brussel sprouts filled the dish rather than nice cut pieces. Only 1 of the 3 sides included a serving spoon. My Kobi chop was served as recommended, cooked medium and not very tender. The sauce was watery and lacked much flavor and the worst part was the corn tasted like a salt shaker was dumped on it. It was also served without a steak knife, I had to ask for it. It was also a fairly small piece. I know it sounds picky but given the cost of eating at Rye my expectations are high. I asked for some rolls and butter at the start of the meal and was told you have to pay for that. Are times that tough? We've been eating out for the last 2 months since my mother has been visiting with us from LA and EVERY place we've eaten at provides bread and butter no charge. 3 main dishes, 3 sides and a glass of wine, 170.00 including tax and nothing spectacular about it. We've eaten recently at Cascone's, Bonefish Grill, Cheesecake Factory, Red Lobster, McCormick and Schmicks, ALL of which were far better quality of food, cooking and value (yes really).
