It all started when she saw our boys sitting at the low two top and offered them a private dining experience right next to us! They downed so much sushi, I nearly had to take out a second mortgage, but I'd happily pay it over and over to see the looks on their faces at 5 and 8 again! To say that a core memory was made that night is a massive understatement, as we have not stopped hearing about this since we returned and my son even made my mother walk him back to the restaurant the next day just to see if he could say hi! She took incredible care of the grown ups too. Helped with menu selections, addressed all requests swiftly and handled any issues with actual regard for the feedback being provided, which is becoming more and more rare in today's industry. The cucumbers and green beans stole the show, with the shrimp and crab noodles not too far behind. The wings and curry were a bit bland for my liking but the wings benefitted by the additional sauce with them. The curry needed a bit more heat, fish sauce, and maybe a hit of vinegar. While on a recent brief vacation stop in SW Michigan, my companion and I visited Jimmy and his gifted chef (wife) to learn if the glowing reviews that we had read were "legit". Boy, did we ever! We're both seasoned travelers and have dined at a wide range of restaurants in the U.S.A. and abroad. Ban Thai is a gem. The freshest produce I've ever had in any restaurant and of premium quality. We had meals there on successive nights and found the food to be consistently tops. The seafood lemongrass soup was outstanding - seasoning and ingredients superlative. I found the spring roll unusual in its presentation and virtually addictive with a tamarind sauce that "wouldn't quit". An eggplant dish demonstrated how that veggie can be a star if prepared right. Service was personable and attentive, primarily because we arrived at 5:00 PM - the start of the dinner schedule. The restaurant is closed for a few hours after lunch for the staff to re-group. It is advised that diners arrive early to avoid a wait. One also must expect to pay a bit more for some specialty items because of the very high level of ingredients used at Ban Thai. This is virtually gourmet eating if one orders smartly. We recommend Ban Thai for any lover of Asian food or for anyone seeking a special eating experience. An out-of-the-way jaunt here would be well worth it. read more

Ban Thai is the best Thai restaurant I've experienced in the Michiana and Chicago. That's right---better than any place in Chicago (I've been to about 5), Ann Arbor, Lansing, Indy, or South Bend. Having grown up in Thailand (from ages 8-18), I'm obsessed with Thai food, and when I couldn't find any place close to me, I started to cook myself. Ban Thai is the one Thai place that I've been very satisfied with. I've gone with my family (wife and 2 young kids) 3 times on the way back from the beach in St. Joseph. Like all these reviews state, Jimmy is an exceptional host---he has the perfect blend of industry, comedy, and good-naturedness that Thais possess. He has a huge love for his native country and cuisine and takes special care to prepare his dishes completely authentically. Though we've gotten a variety of dishes there, our favorites because of authenticity is the Pad See Ewe and, when it's in season, the mangos and sticky rice. Michiana is lucky to have such a devoted Thai restaurateur. If I lived in St. Joseph, I'd likely stop cooking at home. Go to Ban Thai---you will get the real Thai deal! read more

Terrific food and friendly quick service. I'm almost glad I don't live closer, because I would be here all the time. Jimmy is great and the whole family is wonderful. The food is fresh and fast, a difficult combination when I usually have to settle for one or the other. How many restaurants have you been to that when you run into the proprietor in another store he greets you with a big hug? My wife and I love this place, and we bring out of town guests here sometimes, to show off the restaurant, even though it is 20+ miles away. We always get the Thai iced tea; it is cool and refreshing. Everything has been good, so I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite. We like the appetizer combo with a bit of several different items. Even our son who is a picky eater likes it here. I look forward to getting take-home at least once every December. ;-) read more

We have enjoyed Bahn Thai for several years, ever since it opened. They cook the best, most authentic Asian food in Berrien County. It is a small restaurant, and Jimmy, the owner/host, gives personal friendly attention. Check the hours open because they are limited to week-day lunch time and some evening dinner times. Service is great, and orders come quickly, steaming from the kitchen. If you eat vegetarian, the menu has several choices. Otherwise, there is beef, chicken, shrimp, etc . Having grown up in California and lived for one year in Bangkok, I am immensely grateful to have this caliber of Thai cuisine available to me in Southwest Michigan. Jimmy, the owner, moved here from Thailand with his wife, and together they serve up meals that make me miss Thailand! As a vegetarian, I can substitute tofu or vegetables for meat in just about any of the dishes. They also will accommodate whatever level of spiciness you prefer. Their Thai iced tea is perfect. My family just enjoyed a phenomenal meal at Ban Thai. If we didn't live a couple states away, we would be regulars. The combo fried rice tasted really good and had a fair amount of meat and shrimp in it. The orange tofu size is very good and they give you the option to either have it fried or grilled, which is an option most other restaurants don't give you. The downsides were that it did take quite a while as they do heat up the grill per customer as to not waste resources, and I did find a very long hair in my food. This is a carryout only restaurant you cannot dine in and they do not take any type of card so be advised! Their pricing is very fair though.

I prefer the other one, but I will try some other things here. They do not make their own hot mustard or almond cookies also, which China Garden does. The fried rice is better here though. I have no idea what they are doing with all of those boxes, but it does not seem to interfere with what they do in the kitchen.

We did come back about a week ago, my husband and I both got an order of orange chicken. He got fried rice with it while I got plain white rice. Food was average in my opinion. Neither my husband nor I finished our food, which is abnormal for us when eating Chinese cuisine. He also got me some veggie rolls, though I didn't care for them. Overall, not a bad place but I don't see my husband and myself making this restaurant a regular spot.

I liked the black pepper chicken, teriyaki chicken, beef and chicken with broccoli, and honey chicken. I prefer the noodles over the very bland fried rice. The hibachi option looks interesting but I did not try it. I do not eat unlabeled sushi because I do not eat fish, so that was disappointing. I do like other seafood. I wish that they would leave out soy sauce packets. The desserts and fruit were ok. Staff is friendly.
