Delicious Thai place with a charming atmosphere. We had a nice chat with Jimmy, presumably the owner, who was very nice. He makes a lot of jokes and I could see some people not quite appreciating this, but we found him charming. We had a panang curry and the spicy papa, both of which were excellent and had just the right amount of heat. Appetizers of Thao egg rolls and potstickers were also delicious. Jimmy was fantastic and friendly and the food was great. The crab rangoons were great but the dipping sauce was phenomenal. Also had a wonderful Thai Ice Tea. The main course was chicken Lard Nar which was great on flavor, but needed more heat for my pallet. Jimmy brought me some Thai hot sauce and that hit the spot. Great little find! read more

Arrived in town and wanted a restaurant in walking distance. We were greeted warmly even though it was almost closing time. Great spicy shrimp curry. The spicy mama could have been hotter but very tasty. Highly recommend this place, if I am ever in St. Joseph I will definitely be back. read more

I have eaten in-house twice and found the dining room overcrowded, the food so/so, with the scant portion sizes overpriced. With a sigh of exasperation, the waiter made it sound like it was a huge deal to prepare vegetarian food, even though the menu clearly states that that is an option. This is a problem (for them and several of us) since there is a large population of vegetarians in this county. Is it really that hard to leave something out? I think they're loosing money by doing this. I understand that they do allow carry out now, (they didn't at first) but just dinners, not lunches, and only if they aren't busy. Maybe it was a temporary glitch, but I had to go get cash as they couldn't accept my credit card at the time. As a vegetarian, I have come to expect some flexibility in food preparation, particularly in Asian restaurants, but have been told twice now to come back when the restaurant is "slow," that they don't have time to prepare a dish without fish sauce. I would like to know how to guess when this might be? The quality of service and food options seems to depend upon the whim of the waiter. I prefer a sure thing. Tim's Too (Asian Fusion) even goes to the trouble of preparing my food in a clean wok. I guess I'll have to continue to darken their door instead of dining at Ban Thai. read more

I love this place! Thank you Jimmy for moving here so that our little town can have great Thai food! The portions will not last you 3 days like typical take out, but ingredients are high quality and the food is really well made. I will take quality over quantity any day! My favorites: Beef Garlic, Pad Thai and the occasional Panang Curry, a coconut milk based spicy dish, but the mildest of curries. I only hope they can some day expand so that the dining room is bigger (though the little space they have is quite charming-including the restroom!) and that they acquire a liquor license in order to enjoy the occasional glass of wine. We've had Thai food in big cities like Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit and South Bend. This place keeps up with the rest! read more

My wife and I have spent time in CT - near Yale- where there was very good Thai. The same when we lived nearer Chicago. I have to say that Jimmy's food at Ban Thai is every bit as good and the ambiance is also very nice. We strongly recommend this wonderful, small restaurant! read more

FRESH and fabulous! I swear last week when we were in, the team of husband/wife took our order and within six minutes our chop sticks were poking into the pad thai / rama / curry! My mother/father , daughter and I frequent (2x a year) this yummy spot and have not been disappointed. I love when I can stop by Ban Thai for a good meal! Jimmy is a wonderful host, and remembers everyone that comes in! I only give this place 4/5 stars because the prices are a little higher than some other places I've been to for the amount of food you're given. However, it's more than worth trying and I highly recommend the Masaman Curry or Lard Nar! Definitely the best things I've tried there! read more

Phenomenal service, delicious,ultra fresh Thai food at reasonable prices sum up this restaurant. We had several orders of Pad Thai, Red Curry with chicken and Sweet and sour Tofu; all were so tasty and after ordering, made it to our table super quickly. It was an extreme disappointment. I had heard a lot of good reviews about the food but was skeptical about the owners rude and cranky behavior. I experienced it. The place could not be found in the gps. On calling, the owner was extremely rude and slammed down the phone instead of directing us properly. He seem to be in a hurry to close way before closing time mentioned on the website. When my husband entered the restaurant to talk about his rude behavior, the owner was extremely rude and asked him to get out of his restaurant saying 'it is his business' whichever way he can conduct his business. Great food, great service, and from what I saw, really fast take out. Lard Nar was awesome, as were the chive dumplings and soft shell crab fried rice! I want to try one of everything! Really charming. It's itty bitty, colorful, and the ceiling is covered in lanterns and birdcages. The owner is so attentive, he treats you like family. His accent is a little tricky to understand, but he'll repeat "whie oh broh rie" until you figure out whether you'd like white or brown rice. Hadn't been here in awhile. The decor is very nice, Jimmy (the owner ?) is helpful & friendly. Ordered from the lunch menu, fried rice & added shrimp, was told a salad & appetizer of the day came with it. Got about a quarter of a cup of salad & the appetizer consisted of one fried pot sticker, the serving of fried rice was very small & the shrimp were rubbery. I was there with two friends who also ordered from the lunch menu, so I ordered a regular order of the pot stickers for us to share, that only consisted of 5 (which seemed like an odd number). Had water to drink & my bill was almost $18. One of my friends wanted brown rice instead of white rice & was charged an extra $3. This place is way overpriced, seems like New York prices. Ban Thai is my favorite lunch destination in Saint Joe. I get the Pad See Ew with crab rangoons about twice a week and it is phenomenal. It's also the fastest dine-in restaurant around - you can typically get in and out in 8-15 minutes. Sometimes Jimmy may tell you he is "very busy today, at least 25-30 minute wait," but he exaggerates and this typically means it'll be an extra 5-10 minutes. We stopped here randomly for lunch (visiting in town for a wedding). Thai cuisine is one of my favorites, as I grew up in a heavily Asian-influenced city. This place brought me back to the authentic cuisine I grew up on. The owner was so friendly, even giving us tips on our future trip to Thailand. He told us that his noodles are always fresh, never packaged, and damn you can taste the difference. I'm so glad we ended up here- the quality and service are fantastic- I highly recommend it to any visitor or local!!! read more

Amazing food! Our personal favorites are the thai peppered beef and the lemongrass chicken... The owners are wonderful as well... Always remember my husband and I... It's the only Thai in the area. It's very good and authentic. We've had spicy mama, basil beef dish, pad thai and a few other things like pot stickers and chicken satay and all have been good. The only issue is that the portions are small. We all leave hungry, especially the men. However, the food is very good and I've heard that the tofu curry dishes are amazing read more

The service is horrid. We attempted to order take out the day before and we were told to that they were not taking orders. Fine they got a pass for yesterday...today we got there right when they opened and they had one customer in the restaurant and we were told 35 minutes....fine we'll let that slide. So we waited....35 minutes...nothing...60 minutes....still nothing... 90 minutes later we got concerned and inquired as to the status of the order...they look around and see a bag just sitting out on the counter (and not even under a heat lamp). We got home and found the chicken and the rest of the food to be room temperature at best. The Ban Thai shrimp (a $12.95 entree we paid for was nowhere to be found (there were cold egg rolls in the box instead). When we called to inquire the 3rd time (because they were not answering their phone the first 2 times) they didn't resolve the issue of the missing food or even show concern that the food the gave us was room temperature. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. read more
