We discovered this restaurant on Yelp and loved the vibe, Asian menu and cocktail program, so on our visit to Saugatuck I popped by ahead of dinner in an attempt of securing a reservation for our large party. No one was there but the owner picked up the phone and was able to arrange a great table for us right in the bar area! Walking in I was immersed in the moody and dark space, brightened by pops of red and other Asian accents. The bar is beautiful and the bartender was hard at work cranking out cocktails. Lindsay was our server, and she was an absolute breath of fresh air, clearly passionate about her role in providing the guest experience, and frankly, she made all the difference in our experience. It all started when she saw our boys sitting at the low two top and offered them a private dining experience right next to us! They downed so much sushi, I nearly had to take out a second mortgage, but I'd happily pay it over and over to see the looks on their faces at 5 and 8 again! To say that a core memory was made that night is a massive understatement, as we have not stopped hearing about this since we returned and my son even made my mother walk him back to the restaurant the next day just to see if he could say hi! She took incredible care of the grown ups too. Helped with menu selections, addressed all requests swiftly and handled any issues with actual regard for the feedback being provided, which is becoming more and more rare in today's industry. On the food, we ordered most the apps including wings, green beans, cucumbers, shrimp, and spring rolls, and then we added the crab noodles, yellow curry and a few sushi rolls. The cucumbers and green beans stole the show, with the shrimp and crab noodles not too far behind. The sushi was decent, but I found the rice a bit gummy and didn't really get a sense of each element within them. The wings and curry were a bit bland for my liking but the wings benefitted by the additional sauce with them. The curry needed a bit more heat, fish sauce, and maybe a hit of vinegar. As someone who LOVES Asian food, this satisfied the itch after mainly eating American food for so many days, but I'd realistically rate it a 3.5 stars, especially considering the price and value. I have been here twice now and both times everything was exceptional! The ambiance and vibe of the restaurant is unlike any other place in the West Michigan area! The menu is very big and there's a lot of variety and something for everyone! I can't recommend this place enough, it is truly one of my favorite restaurants in Michigan. The service is very attentive and kind and even when we went on a busy night and they were missing a chef, they were still super accommodating and apologetic. I will say this is definitely on the pricier side but you are paying for amazing quality food, service and ambiance! Expect to pay around $80+ per person for drink, apps, entree and dessert depending on what you get. There is plenty of street parking in Saugatuck but during the busier summer months you might have to circle around a few times to find a spot. Super cool ambience. I loved the red lantern and the red mood lighting. They went all the way with that color and ambience and as the kids say, I am here for it and would give it a 10/10. We got the crab noodles and Mongolian beef. Both were really great and delicious. The beef especially was very tasty. The crab was good too but I felt like the noodles were just a little over done but what do I know?? But it was still quite good and unique! Oh, and we got the green beans - they were SOOOOO good! After their chef left, the food has gone steadily downhill. My $32 crab noodles were incredibly disappointing--there was barely any crab, which was honestly shocking for the price. The $14 fried rice and crab rangoon were bland and completely forgettable. The pork buns were dry and actually flavorless. Tucked away in an alley the Singapore room has an inviting nature with great decor and atmosphere. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated immediately. Poor experience all around. A coworker recommended this place because she was good friends with their chef, and we were initially very excited to try it. Front of house was condescending when I mentioned we came because of said fact. Totally good with that, she probably had a lot on her mind. Our server was very sweet and they give healthy pours of wine. Food is the challenge here. Sichuan green beans came out cold. They were barely cooked. The garlic was still raw. I had to ask the server to send back to reheat this. Curry was way too sweet and was not balanced at all. Too much coconut milk was used, not enough spice or seasoning was used to counteract this. Fried prawns did not have the crispy texture you'd expect on the first bite. They were cooked through, but ate soggy. Atmosphere is fine - the whole restaurant has that "red light" vibe which I think can be interpreted in a variety of ways - but if you're close to the door when the sun is still out, it's confusing. I chose the Singapore Room to celebrate my birthday on Saturday with my husband and four friends. The atmosphere and decor are beautiful, but unfortunately, everything else about our evening was deeply disappointing. Our server, Charise, set a poor tone from the moment we sat down. We were immediately rushed to order drinks and appetizers before we even had time to review the menu. Four of us asked for water right away; the alcoholic beverages arrived first, and our appetizers were served before water ever reached the table--I eventually had to ask a second time just to get water. When our entrees arrived, we requested salt and pepper, which was never brought, and no one ever checked back on our table. When we asked about splitting the bill, Charise flatly told us no, despite the menu explicitly stating that checks can be split up to two ways. Knowing a party of six incurs an automatic gratuity, we accepted paying together. The situation went from poor service to completely unacceptable at the end of the night. While my husband was taking care of the bill, Charise grabbed his plate off the table. He tried to tell her he wasn't finished, but she walked away. When she returned, he brought it up, and she offered to comp the dish. Our initial bill of $298 was adjusted to $262 (which already included the mandatory gratuity). My husband signed for the $262 total and drew a clear line through the additional tip section. However, when we checked our card statement, we were charged $322-- an extra $60 added without our consent. Had a great first Singapore Room dining experience. As locals, we LOVE having a few solid/go to downtown restaurants; Ladybird is officially in the rotation. Further, it's refreshing to walk into a restaurant where the décor mirrors the feel and food. We arrived at the Singapore Room JUST before the rush so we could take our time, enjoy some drinks, then stage our apps and meals. Stefanie (server) took special care of us, made solid recommendations, and worked with us to pace our meal. Solid drink menu. Specifically, we enjoyed the negroni and beer selection. Was immediately impressed with the dim lit and red interior and brought to our table since we had a reservation. I ordered sake to drink besides water and it was so smooth! Loved it We ordered crab rangoons, dumplings, and cucumber salad to share which were all very delicious! The dumplings especially with the very flavorful sauce. I had high hopes for this spot since I was really craving vegetable dumplings and it was the only place nearby that had them. Unfortunately, my experience was pretty disappointing. When I arrived, it took a while for anyone to greet me -- the main bartender seemed more focused on talking to friends. I was eventually seated at the bar, and even though they weren't taking to-go orders, my waitress was kind enough to say she'd give me containers if I wanted to pack my food. I ordered the vegetable dumplings, the chef's special vegetables, and jasmine rice. The rice and dumplings came out first -- the rice was unevenly cooked with some crunchy spots, and the dumplings were extremely salty. The vegetables came later, and they were also overwhelmingly salty. By the end, my tongue felt like I'd just eaten a jumbo movie theater popcorn. As I was boxing my food to leave, the bartender finally acknowledged me, making a strange comment about "finding a workaround" so the chef wouldn't find out -- which left me feeling uncomfortable. On top of that, the slogan printed on the back of their shirts ("Too dark. Too spicy. Too loud.") threw me off as a Black customer -- if the owner isn't a person of color, I'd seriously reconsider that branding. The pork dumpling are a must. Pro tip, keep the dipping sauce and put it on everything. The DanDan noodle are also a must. For the main course I suggest the garlic prawns and the pork belly.
