My family stopped at this restaurant on the way back to Chicago the day after Thanksgiving. After a not so great turkey meal the night before, the Ban Thai food made up for it by leaps and bounds. We ordered the chicken satay, pad see ew, pad woonsen and spicy mama and barely had any leftovers to take home-- it was that good! Not only was the food excellent (I would even argue the best Thai food I've ever had), but the owner, Jimmy, made our night and entire experience. Terrible. Expensive. Owner doesn't have a clue. Thai food for those who may never have had a good comparison. The Panang curry was runny, like soup, absent the correct ingredients, and the chicken Pad Thai had very little chicken in it, the noodles were stuck together, and it had an odd, über sweet taste we've never experienced before. Really terrible. The kicker was this: Upon ordering, the owner asked us if he could add $1 to the listed price of each entree because "chicken is so expensive". Shocked, we agreed expecting decent food. This, for entrees already near-double in cost to other Thai restaurants. The hubris of being the only game in town will lead us elsewhere in the future. We understand inflation and the Covid nightmare, but this was beyond and truly disappointing. read more

Ban Thai is my favorite place for lunch in or near St. Joseph, Michigan (2936 Niles Ave)! I usually have one of their lunch specials, for $8.95, which I order "hot," since I like spicy ("mild" or "medium" are also available). Jimmy and his wife own the business, with the nicely engaging Jimmy greeting his customers and taking orders. His wife does the cooking. The lunch comes with a small salad with an extremely tasty dressing. Closed Sunday and Monday. No lunch on Saturday. read more

Quality food and service make a great restaurant. Ban Thai offers both in heaps. We're in town for our family vacation, and decided to carry out from here. We ordered tom yum soup, pad see ew, basil fried rice, and chicken satay and veggie pot stickers. Everything was 5 star-worthy. And not only was the food great, the portions were huge! What I also appreciated is that the portions weren't due to excessive amounts of veggies - which happens often with Asian restaurants. And the service was tip tip too. The owner greeted me as I walked in. Anyone could tell this man puts great care and effort into his restaurant. He was very courteous. The terrible thing is that I'll be craving Ban Thai when I'm back home in Chicago. I hope the residents of BH and St. Joe's continue to support this business. It's a gem. read more

Have gone several times, and every time I've left with SUCH a happy stomach! The food is outstanding*. Whether you're looking for a cozy, flavor-filled soup to bring you warmth on a rainy day, or looking for a healthier but still-filling meal, Ban Thai's menu has it all- and it's been worth every cent (the serving sizes are also usually pretty big so that's been a plus). I'll start off by saying I'm really happy I found this place. I honestly just wish they were open for lunch and offered delivery through a delivery service. (Although my wallet might be in trouble if they did.) They're currently only open for take out in the evenings (starting at 5pm). When I called my order in I was told that my order would be ready in 45 minutes to an hour. I was a little thrown off by that wait time but I figured they must be good to have that long of a wait time. My order was ready sooner and the restaurant called me to let me know it was ready. The dishes were a lot bigger then I thought. Don't let those take out containers fool you. It's A LOT of food. We got the pad Thai, egg plant stir fry, and the pad see ew. All three were delicious. My favorite was definitely the pad see ew. You can tell they use fresh rice noodles and it's amazing! Price wise, it's pretty standard for this area. I highly recommend this restaurant. My 13-year-old daughter and I were in the area for a short vacation and tried Ban Thai since Thai food is our favorite. We decided to splurge and try the sticky rice with mango. The owner assured us it would be worth it and wow, was he right! The (very large) mango was so sweet and tender; we were easily able to slice through it with our plastic forks. My daughter refers to it as the "magical mango" and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. Honestly, we both agreed that this dessert was the best we'd ever had. It was amazing! For the next couple days, we would each space off with dreamy looks on our faces when we would think of it. The only downside: regular mangoes will never be the same. We also had beef with garlic sauce and seafood with basil leaves. Both were wonderful! If we're ever in the area again, we'll definitely be back! read more

The perfect blend of great food and even better customer service! The owner seemed SUPER involved and made me feel extremely welcomed. I got curbside pick up and he seemed genuinely interested in my safety, made conversation at a distance and even threw in a free drink. As far as food, I was worried that I wouldn't find a good Thai place moving to St. Jo but WOW was I wrong. The food is great and tastes so authentic. I had a taste for Thai so we stopped here during a recent trip to the area. Ban Thai is easy to find in a small strip center on Niles. The decor is eclectic and colorful...the owner, Jimmy is super friendly and struck up conversation with us and made a few good suggestions about the menu. We started with crispy egg rolls and fried rice which were very good. My hubby ordered Tom Yum soup with seafood, also very good. I had the Shrimp and Broccoli which was ok..I thought the sauce was a bit watery and the shrimp were very small and still had the tails on (which I don't care for). With tip our bill for two (with no drinks) was $60 - way too expensive in my opinion, especially if you're not walking out with a doggie bag, like we usually do at other Asian restaurants. Everything considered the food was tasty and you could tell the owner is very hard working so I would stop by again if we're in the area but I couldn't afford to make Ban Thai a regular habit. read more

This place was absolutely delicious. The service was amazing, and food came fast and hot. Jimmy. The owner, was our server, and he was so kind and friendly. I went with my picky eater husband and granddaughter. I got the Lard nar Noodle dish, and it was absolutely amazing! As an appetizer, we got Shumai, which were these shrimp dumplings packed with loads of flavor. My husband ordered cashew chicken and tomkha soup, which had a coconutty tomato taste. My granddaughter, who is helping me write this review, got the pad se ewe, which was a rice Noodle dish with brocolli, carrots, and chicken with a sweet soy sauce. She said it was amazing and the noodles were crispy and flavorful. The carrots in all our dishes were cut beautifully. But by far, our favorite part about the place was the sticky mango rice! You are served a mango, and in the center is a sticky rice with a sweet sauce draped over it. This is a must try when you go here. The establishment was very clean and well decorated. Will definitely be coming back soon! The price was great for the servings and the flavor we got. I highly recommend going here. read more

My one year old LOVES Thai curry (weird, I know ) so we decided to try out this place when we were visiting my family. We got a couple curries, a couple noodle dishes and some appetizers! The curries (panang and duck) were much more authentic than others that we've tried. My husband and I had traveled to Thailand a couple years ago and the panang especially tasted much more like panang curry you'd get there than most Thai restaurants here. Yum! The Pad See Ew was AMAZING and one of the best I've had. The owner mentioned that he gets fresh noodles from Chicago and it's clear that those make the difference. The owner is a very nice man who really cares about his restaurant, driving from Chicago when it is open to help run it. Because it's more limited hours it can get very busy (rightfully so) so call early! We always get the chicken pad Thai and pad see ew with beef. First time coming here. Loved every minute! From the great customer service to the delicious dishes to the decor. Every minute I was there just got better and better. The owner pulled out my chair when he seated us, he hung my coat, he gave insightful menu advice. My Hubby and I ordered an appetizer that was fantastic. Then we ordered three entrees to share, all we incredibly delicious. Then for desert we got the sticky rice with fresh coconut ice cream and it was to die for. We are vegetarians, which can make it tough finding good food sometimes but there were plenty of options for us. I would go there again and again.
