Growing up, I used to be given Banana up till my teens. However recently I have found myself coming back due to its timeless style and high-quality fabric. After purchasing a couple items on Monday 6/9 at around 4:30PM, I wanted to return one original-priced item that was purchased and gifted to me just a couple days prior. I brought the original receipt and clearly told the woman working here at the counter that I would like store credit for the item. She ignored me and processed the return back to the original card. Not only did she refuse to reverse the transaction, she also repeatedly blamed me for not asking for a gift receipt when the item was purchased, claiming that "only a gift receipt will allow her to provide store credit." I have never heard of such a policy - the original receipt should work even better than a gift receipt. She kept blaming me for not having a gift receipt, and when I asked for a manager, I waited 20 minutes only for the manager to come and say, "The transaction already went through, we can't do anything about it - no reversal, no store credit, nothing." I then asked to just cancel the return so I can keep the item, and they refused that as well and had the nerve to suggest re-purchasing it with my own card. Any other store easily provides store credit for an item, and if the worker makes such a careless, costly mistake, they should take the blame and reverse the transaction instead of making up a ridiculous rule to constantly blame the customer. Just got back from this Banana Republic in Rockefeller Center and felt compelled to share my experience. Because of the holidays, the store was pretty crowded. When we found someone to help us, he was extremely unhelpful. He appeared "stoned" as he could barely open his eyes, and it took him a few minutes to comprehend our questions. We inquired about additional sizes in the back and he stared at his hand-held device, looking as if he didn't know how to check on inventory. At one point, he forgot he was helping us and drifted over to another set of clothes and stared at the folded pants. Offerings, sales and customer service at this Banana Republic have been consistent for many years, despite prices inching higher and the quality of clothing diminishing. There are three levels (below ground is Men's and the other two floors have women's clothing). I shop here, even though it's hit or miss in the sales section. Before we go into the details, I do want to say that this review is not for the Weddington Way part of the store. Weddington Way was amazing--the customer service rep was super helpful in helping me pick out some dresses. Even though she had two appointments coming in, she still took time to help me. This review is for the rest of the store--in particular, the first and second floor (women's and women's petite). I think I had this experience because I came in the middle of an afternoon. There were some staff members who were having staff meetings on the floor. Some staff members were scattered about, but I was generally ignored. I looked someone straight in the eye, about to ask a question, and she walked away from me. At one point, I did not see any staff members around. When I got to the men's section of the store (basement), I was able to find someone to help me. I don't understand why I would need to go all the way to the basement of a store to get some help. Fantastic shopping experience! I tried on some clothes and thought about a few pieces and then went back to make my purchases. The sales associate was incredibly helpful, she gave me ideas on how to style and accessorize, and what clothing items are true to size and what needs to be sized up or down depending on fit and stretch. I love that kind of personal service. I am not the most trendy or put together person but I do my best, so any store that has quality clothing and friendly, attentive service without being rude or condescending is a win-win in my book. read more

I can't believe I haven't done this review. I've been shopping in BR since the 1970's. At that time it was actual Safari Style Clothing. A lot of vests, jackets, khakis with all kinds of pockets. Jungle gear at reasonable prices. I have stayed loyal to the brand. I slipped away in the 1980's. Since I've been coming to this Flagship location I am a fan again. They are gradually returning to a more notable style. The quality is returning. The sale this week at 40% off is very tempting. If you text a number on your phone you get an additional $10 off. This store is always neat and clean. The displays draw you in. They recently placed a lady manakin in the men's department. Nice touch to show off ladies outfit!! The sales people are wonderful. I have spoken to many of them on various occasions. They know their product and they know the store layout. Always helpful. I love the quality, style , store, sales personnel, and sales prices/promotions. Nothing more to say but highly recommend this location!! read more

I always find a great selection of sizes and great deals at this Banana Republic, and despite having been here the year before, I managed to find even more goodies this year. In fact, I'm wearing one of such said goodies as we speak! However, I had this misconception .... for some reason I thought this store was so large last year it was hard for me to get through everything. However, this year, I was made aware that this store is nothing but a slice between some other stores in Rockefeller center and the sale area, where actual sale items are not just random in-store mark downs, are very small. I don't know how it is I managed to find so much clothes last year but they also have a poor men's selection of coats since most of the ones there were XL or larger. It can sometimes get messy but when I went it was relatively tamed. They have really awesome wool coats and when they're on sale in even XS which also carry great price tags. I visited this location for the first time after using the companies online reservation process. After receiving an email that my items were being held I arrived to purchase the items very close to their closing time. When I entered, the staff was very busy straightening products and merchandise on the floor. I must say I am not used to having to seek out help in a retail store because most sales people are on you from the time you enter. However, the staff here were quite the opposite because they seemed to be trying to avoid all eye contact or any interaction. Maybe because it was near closing time? But once I was able to corner a person on the floor she was very helpful and retrieved my items being held on hold for me. there was no line because the store was pretty empty so checking out was a breeze. read more

I like this location. I was here for their "re-opening" party after they remodeled. Selection: I like that they have a casual corner, sales section, petites and a seasonal section where they have been displaying jewelry but sometimes have specialty designs. They also have a men's floor that can be accessed from underground. Great for bad weather day shopping. Service: I read some reviewing saying service wasn't great but I never had a problem. The sales staff is super nice and isn't pushy when they see that I am trying to avoid them. Back in the day, I used to be really into those Banana Republic t-shirts with Indiana Jones-ish designs on them. Whatever happened to those shirts? Does anyone remember them? I guess they don't fit in Banana's image anymore. Not that I was looking for them here, but I was on a hunt for work-appropriate pants at this BR location. I was already pretty shopped out after hitting a few other more hectic retailers on Fifth Avenue but decided to give Banana a shot. This neatly-organized flagship boasts three floors, with women's clothing on the main and second floors, and men's clothing down in the basement. Women's stuff on sale is also on the second floor. Banana Republic in general is a little overpriced to me, but there was a juicy sale going on, 50% off dresses and 40% off other garments. I actually found a me-esque dress for fall/winter, suitable for work, so I was thrilled which made up for the fact that I couldn't quite find any pants that were exactly what I needed. When there was a long wait to use the changing room upstairs, the staffers told us that there was no wait downstairs which was thoughtful of them. I had no idea where the changing room was on the main floor but by a stroke of luck, I was following another defector, and she was able to locate it easily. P.S. Ok I have to start out by saying I'm biased towards Banana Republic and maybe 90% of my wardrobe comes from them. If anything, that makes me a Banana expert (and maybe a little sad) and you can trust me when I say that this is the best Banana store in New York City. (I've been to them all) This location is their flagship store, it's the biggest one in NY which obviously means the largest selection. Two floors of women's clothing and a huge area for sale items. What happened? Used to be a great place to shop but a couple of recent experiences really show this place dropping off the map. Bought a suit recently, had it tailored, picked it up and got home. Found the security wire still connected. After trying with all kinds of devices to cut it, had to get bolt cutters from hardware store down the street. Ridiculous. But actually, not as bad as the way I was treated by the woman in the changing area. Totally indifferent, rude, non-communicative. And then waiting forever (no line, mind you) to try to get someone's attention to check me out. Same suit, the complete horrible experience. This is an okay Banana Republic. It is very large and well laid out. They have a large selection of clothing and sizes. The only negative is the staff gives the appearance of being very busy, busy doing what, no one knows. I needed a pair of pants altered and it took forever for them to bring a pair of shoes for me to try on with the pants. Then they brought the wrong heel height. When I asked for another pair of pants in the same size, I was greeted with a moment of silence before the sales person would get the pants which were located right outside of the fitting room (BTW she asked me if I needed anything). The sales girl was very reluctant to pin the pants and hemmed and hawed for a while before she agreed to do it. By then I was late and told them to forget the whole purchase. read more

I went to this Banana Republic when visiting New York a few months back. I had never experienced such rude customer service people. I was looking for size 10 pants, and the woman on the floor told me they "weren't sure they carried sizes that large" and said it might be hard to find clothes there at my "large size." I am a size 30/US 10 and 5'8. I was totally flabbergasted. My boyfriend was able to find some sweaters he liked, so I gave them an extra star. Banana Republic posted an ad on Instagram with an long-haired, androgynous person in a smiling pose, a blue puffer jacket. Photo was cropped at the waist and the model was turned to the side so that the jacket covered the chest. I ordered it because I thought the woman looked friendly and I liked the color. I chose a large. I received a man's puffer jacket for a huge man, should have been XXL, and when I tried to return it, I was told it was non-exchangeable, no flexibility. This is pathetic. All stores that sell online tell you what gender you are ordering so you can determine size accurately. I think Banana Republic is dishonest and untrustworthy. They got the androgyny right but took no responsibility for sending a product that would fit a Yeti. read more

I am a fan of the Banana Republic (BR) brand, but due to the poorly-stocked stores in the Baltimore area, the only option I have to buy BR products is basically online. Very impressed with this store - I visited the store during the Black Friday weekend and even with the volume of shoppers, the store was well-kept and the associates were busily re-folding the clothes with great speed and care. Everyone was pretty friendly and eager to help. Unlike the Banana Republic (BR) stores in the Baltimore area, this store is probably 5-6x bigger in square footage and all the items are well stocked. Most items have all the sizes still available (many do not have size small anymore, however), whereas it's quite common to only have items sized L and up at other BR locations. At this store, I found super hip looks for men and women. It seems like everything was being marketed towards men and women between the ages of 25 and 35. Whereas, in the Bay Area, everything is marketed towards men and women between the ages of 45 and 55. Customer service was great. Helped me find a great pair of opaque tights for La Novia. You are just the Gap with an additional $5-$10 placed on each article of clothing. While I do enjoy some of BR's quality apparel, this location was just full of overpriced shirts and pants. I prefer to check out the Banana Republic sales online or visit the outlet stores when I am in the area. By the way, just because you make your arm rails look like an escalator, it doesn't let you get away with no escalators in this three floor store. You know I never really shopped here because I thought the prices were way too high and the clothes boring, but I stopped in because my friend needed to see if she left something there, and I swear, I've checked out BANANA 3 times since then in the following week. But this is only because their SALE is amazing. I got a ton of work clothes where each item was less than $30. And a cashmere cardigan for only $33!!! I had no idea that their sales were soo great, but my friend informed me that they do indeed have the best sales. Now I'll be checking their website regularly to check out their sales items. Four dollar signs (the highest range on Yelp), in my opinion, equals truly high-end labels like Marc Jacobs, Chanel, etc. Always trying to avoid Midtown, I rarely went shopping near Rockefeller Center during my years in NYC. However, I must give massive props for this prime location (being that it is neighboring my two favorite stores J Crew and Anthropology). The few times I actually went to this BR location, I always found it well stocked, neatly organized, and fairly affluent in the sales section.
