It was something I never had but for sure I will be having AGAIN. Also, had the pad Kee Mow (drunken noodles) these are typical Thai dishes that you should not f-up but several places here DO! Stopped by AltThai in Arlington Heights and this is one of those places where it's very easy to over-order -- but you probably won't regret it. We tried a mix across the menu, and what stood out right away was how many dishes can be made vegan, which makes it a great option for vegetarians or mixed groups. A few must-tries for me: * The Thai wrap -- DIY style and easily one of the more fun dishes on the menu * Red curry * Curry fried rice * Basil dish The papaya salad was also really well done and worth ordering. My family decided to spend our Easter Sunday at Alt Thai in Arlington Heights. We were not disappointed. Just as you enter the establishment you are greeted warmly by the hostess and wait staff, as you see this beautiful floral arrangement of various-hued Orchids crowned with Bird of Paradise, right below this inverted pyramid of Gold Leaves! Exquisite! "Pooh" who was to be our server was gracious, polite, prompt and always accommodating. Then there came our food. We started out with my wife's favorite-Crispy Tofu. I ordered Fresh Spring Rolls and one of our sons ordered some fresh Papaya Salad. We were so hungry that I never got to take pics of our main course: Chicken Pad Thai, Pineapple Curry with Chicken, Green Curry with Beef, Crispy Basil Salmon, Hawaiian Chicken, and of course, as soon as I saw it, I had to order their Blue Crab Fried Rice! Everything was delicious. It had an overall superior quality about them that you could just taste, maybe because of the freshness and the quality of their ingredients? I definitely attribute it to the restos decor that definitely added to the overall complete satisfaction of the whole dining experience. I recently tried AltThai in Arlington Heights and had a great experience. The food was really flavorful and everything tasted fresh. We ordered quite a few vegetarian dishes and honestly enjoyed all of them. The fresh tofu rolls, spring rolls, tofu satay, veggie pot stickers, and veggie egg rolls were all really good starters. For drinks, the Thai iced tea and mango nectar were both delicious. For entrees, we tried the mixed vegetables rice dish, basil fried rice, Pad Kee Mao, and Panang curry. Everything was well seasoned and full of flavor. They also have live jazz on Sundays from 6 to 7:30, which is such a nice touch and makes the atmosphere even better. Disrespectful service ruined a regular meal ... I used to love this place, but I will not be returning after my last luncheon experience. The male server was incredibly rude and cocky. My soup arrived 30 minutes late, and instead of apologizing when asked, he disrespectfully blamed my appetizer for the delay. I completely lost my appetite, packed my food to go, and left hungry. It was date night and my wife and I decided to get Thai food. We landed on altThai in Arlington Heights. I made reservations for 5:30 PM through Yelp and it was very easy. When we arrived it was not very busy in the restaurant. We were greeted and seated immediately. Wile looking through all the menu options our server took or drink orders (Coca Cola for me and a Green Iced Tea) and appetizer order. I wanted to try their new Shrimp Sticks appetizer. We also ordered the Steamed Vegetable Potstickers. Our drinks came immediately and shortly after the appetizers arrived. The shrimp sticks were pretty unique looking, they were served in a glass. The pot stickers looked good and were cooked to the right temperature. After digging into appetizers, our server took our main dishes. We ordered the Pad See Ew (veggies) and Pad Woon Sen (tofu). The Shrimp Stickers were crispy and hot and came with a sweet and sour sauce. The shrimp was seasoned perfectly and was tender and cooked right. The pot stickers were yummy and had a sweet ginger sauce. As we were finishing up the appetizers, our main dishes arrived. The Pad See Ew wide noodles was covered with a sweet soy sauce and the broccoli, carrots, and peapods were crunchy. It started to get really busy and diners started to come in. I think 5:30 was a good time to arrive. . The Pad Woon Sen glass noodles were married with broccoli, carrots, peapod, onions, bean sprouts, mushrooms, egg and crisp tofu. Both dishes were good and had large portions. I really enjoyed the service and the food was great. I wanted to try more dishes so we will be back for sure. I first went to altThai probably more than a decade ago. Since I don't live in the area, it's been awhile since I've been back but was able to revisit again recently for a friend's going away party. Since there were a good number of people, I had a chance to try out a few different appetizers including the crab rangoons, papaya salad, thai sausage, and chicken satay. For my entree, I ordered the beef Pad See Ew. My wife and I also shared a Thai Iced Tea and Thai Iced Coffee. For the appetizers, the one thing that stood out was how spicy the papaya salad was. Our entire table was chugging their water and thai iced tea after having it to deal with the spice. As a spicy food lover, the spice level was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed it...so much so that I had high expectations for my Pad See Ew because I had ordered it extra spicy (more on that later). The rest of the appetizers were okay. I wasn't a fan of the thai sausage but recognize it might just not fit my preferred taste profile. Chicken satay was not bad, perhaps just a tad dry. Given my high expectations for the spice in the Pad See Ew after having the papaya salad, I did end up setting myself up for disappointment. My entree was nothing close and in fact, didn't feel spicy at all to me (my wife, who generally can't do much spicy, did confirm that it was made spicy, but just not to the degree that I wanted). The noodle flavors were good but the beef was on the drier side. I have another Thai place close to my house that somehow does their beef super tender every time. Unfortunately, both due to that, the cost, and the serving size, this was a miss for me. The Thai Iced Coffee and Thai Iced Tea were fine. It was in line with most other Thai places I've been to. Came here as I've been wanting to try this place out. The ambience is welcoming and colorful, and service was prompt and efficient. This isn't my first time having Thai food, so a little curious as to how it would be. The crispy appetizer plate was excellent, and I absolutely loved the shrimp sticks. I got pad see ew and my husband the salmon. The pad see ew had that classic smoky taste, just wish there were some more veggies with it. My husband said his salmon was good, but did not seem as spicy as he ordered it. Overall I enjoyed this place. If I am in the area again, I would list this up as a place to go to again. read more

We came by for an early dinner on a Friday night, we didn't have a reservation but should really make one for next time as they were getting super busy as we sat there eating. We started our evening with the dimsum set, it had a variety of dimsum rice rolls and they were great. There were two of each and made it super easy to share with my husband so we could share everything. The sauce that came with it did have a surprising kick as well. For my entree I got a beef pad Thai, and I ordered it mild, so glad I did because it certainly did come with a kick. A good one though, not overpowering but with great flavor. I also got a Thai iced tea that helped calm the spice. For dessert we got an order of the fried ice cream. It was huge we couldn't finish it but it was a nice sweet treat to wrap up the dinner. The staff was super attentive and refilled our water cups multiple times and were incredibly friendly when making menu suggestions. We enjoyed it. We've been here a few times over the years. We were in the area from out of town and decided to have lunch here today. I had the Won Ton Soup (lunch) with Pot Sticker side. The Pot Stickers (2) were fried and were served with a thick dark sauce. I was surprised they were fried but I did enjoy them. The Won Ton Soup was pretty big. There were about 4 Won Tons, quite a bit of meat (I had duck), a lot of noodles, green onions and a lot of broth. I ate all the Won Tons and Duck, some of the noodles and some of the broth. I also added some seasoning that was on the table in a shaker. I enjoyed the soup. My wife had the Pad Thai. She said it was better than average. She's a Pad Thai snob so her rating is very good. This restaurant is versatile. It makes for a lovely little family outing, weeknight takeout, or even date night! They have ample seating and the decor makes for a warm and inviting atmosphere. The service was okay; I think they were understaffed when I went. They ended up serving one dish at a time which may not sit well with everyone, but we enjoyed it. I loved the sampler plate as an appetizer because each item came with its own unique dipping sauce. If you don't live nearby it's a great way to try as many dishes as possible without spending a fortune or overeating. The spring rolls and chicken satay were especially delicious. Went on a Sunday night to have Thai and listen to jazz. Didn't have a reservation (would recommend one though) and didn't have to wait too long. The jazz band was fantastic and added to the overall vibe. Food was excellent. We had Fried Tofu, Pot Stickers and Spring Rolls for apps and all were good. Alt Thai has fresh flavors and light sauces that enhance but don't overwhelm the food. A go to dish for me is Cashew Tofu: the tofu is thin sliced and lightly grilled, with excess moisture removed unlike other restaurants where the tofu is more mushy. Sauce is light and tangy. I order this non-spicy but not as vegetarian so it does have fish sauce: I don't taste the fish snd trust me, I am picky so go with this sauce. Also served with pea pods, bell peppers, pineapple, and cashews. You won't miss the meat if you normally get Cashew chicken or beef. I also order Massaman curry (mild) with tofu: sauce is creamy, potatoes firm and just the right size, and peanuts. I will sometimes add broccoli to this. This curry rates high: as good as curry in Chicago restaurants. My daughters love chicken fried rice too: nice combo of vegetables, plenty of white meat chicken. read more

Craving for something Thai, so we decided to revisit Alt Thai. It is still a nice place with elegant Thai decoration, and the staffs are always friendly and welcoming. The menu is extensive, and they have an indication of gluten-free option. We ordered a Thai lettuce wrap appetizer, which was quite unique - it came with peanuts, coconuts, chilies, dried shrimps, limes. You can then assemble with the lettuce provided. It's a good portion of starter, and not filling you up before the main course. The foods were good - creamy coconut curry to pour over rice, came with a side of veggies. My family went here for the first time on a Friday night at 5:45. We had made reservations, which I recommend doing since the place was packed by the time we left! I was immediately impressed by the unique decor (pictures don't do it justice). The service we had from beginning to end was outstanding. The pacing of everything was perfect. I ordered fried tofu with sweet & sour sauce and crushed peanuts. The sauce was flavorful and had a spicy bite, which I hadn't expected. The tofu was crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. For my meal, I ordered their Mixed Vegetable dish with jasmine rice. The veggies were cooked in a soy sauce so I ordered a side of peanut sauce. It made a delicious vegan meal! I was also impressed that when my daughter ordered Pad Kee Mao, our server asked if she wanted the dish to be vegetarian or vegan. The restaurants decor is very nice w/authentic Thai decor. We were greeted & seated and perused the lunch menu. We decided to order a couple of dishes & share family style so we could try a few items. We ordered 2 dishes 1 noodle dish Pad Woon Sen - This came w/the stir fried glass noodles. This dish came w/an option of beef, pork, chicken, or shrimp. We choose the beef w/stir fried vegetables mixed in The second dish had a combination of beef, stir fired vegetables & a ball of white rice. Both of these dishes came w/a small bowl of Panang Curry Soup that was excellent & for me the highlight of the meal. We were also offered a choice of a small cucumber salad in a sweet vinegar that was delicious & 2 small fried dim sum which was very good. I've been a loyal customer of the seafood noodles. lately, the quality has been super inconsistent. The first 10 times I ordered, they were amazing. The last few times, they've been VERY dry, bland, and disappointing, especially for the price. I always request no calamari or mussels just a personal preference and unlike most places, they don't offer any kind of substitution or price adjustment. When I ask for extra noodles to make up for it, they just charge more instead of working with the changes. I really wanted to keep supporting this spot, but at this point, it's hard to justify paying full price for a dish that's hit or miss every time. read more
