I've worked in this area for close to 20 years and I've reviewed Bangkok Palace quite a few times, just a a bit frustrated that my reviews for this place seem to disappear since this place deserves more visibility and business, especially with all xenophobia and the vandalism they had to endure during the pandemic and during all of the protests in 2020 and 2021. I am so grateful that Bangkok Palace is in the area. They are always so quick to answer my call and prepare my food in minutes that when I arrive at their door my food is usually ready to go. They consistently get my order right 100% of the time despite any language barriers and accents which is rare even if that wasn't an issue. The staff is always so friendly and accommodating and treat you like a valued customer. Food is always made to order and fresh, corners are never cut, and portion sizes have remained consistent over the years. I feel so bad for downtown businesses such as this one, as it is such a difficult environment to own a restaurant in, and with high crime rates and low foot traffic, Bangkok Palace and their wonderful staff deserve all of the love. read more

Recommended by a hotel staff and very close. I walked there. When you enter, you have to order and pay and then sit down and wait for the food to be delivered. Food takes some time but it was busy. I was meeting someone there and would have preferred something a little more upscale. Place was bustling but started to open up after 1pm in a weekday. They were great about cleaning tables right away. They were out of the first appetizer we chose. We went with the rolls and each got a pad Thai. Rolls were not great. Fourth night of the work trip and we were craving Thai. And it just so happened that this place was right across the street from our hotel. So A+ for convenience. I got the fried tofu appetizer and chicken tom yum soup. I also ordered an appetizer sampler from the table, of which I tried the pot sticker, chicken satay, and Bangkok roll. I also got to sample an eggplant from my coworker's stir fry, and my other coworker's tofu yellow curry. It was a mixed bag. The curry was watery compared to my preferred curry back home. It was also the lowest spice-level and still very spicy. Further, the Bangkok roll, pot sticker, fried tofu, and corresponding dipping sauces weren't anything memorable. The eggplant was good. Additionally, the satay and dipping sauce were delicious. The winner was my soup. Probably better than the tom yum I get at home. Convenient location for Thai food. This was right next to our hotel. Simple decor, nothing overly exciting. Casual vibe. We were greeted as soon as we walked in, and we were able to ask about accommodating and shellfish allergy with no issues. Very helpful. Went here for lunch recently. The food is pretty good in general. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and a side of egg rolls. I'd give them 4+ stars if it weren't for the fact they charged me a meal's fee for egg rolls you'd normally get for free in a to-go order. Stopped in at the Palace after a day of walking the streets of Portland. It was about 430 and I dodged in because there's one thing I always eat, and it's Thai food. Ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken, and said "as spicy as you can make it". It was a quick 15 minute cook, got it to go, and walked back up to my hotel. When I got to the room, I opened up the container and saw a TON of spice on it, here we go! Then I realized they didn't actually cook it with spice, they just added it to the top and called it good. That was disappointing. The spice was all right, but not really that hot, but the flavor was good. Price was a little high for what it was, but then again, all take out is expensive lately. I probably wouldn't go back if I come back to the area, but mainly because there's so many other options nearby. This place has promise though. Best of luck to them. read more

Really delicious! I had the spring rolls with peanut sauce as well as the mango stir-fry. Both were fantastic. Extremely harmonious and well balanced - I loved the balance of the sweet mango with the umami sauce fragrant with basil. The star shaped rice was so cute too. We weren't sure what to eat for lunch, we just wandered in but left so happy due to the delicious food as well as the stellar service. read more

Pretty good Thai food! Came here during lunch time, and it was packed. I would recommend coming early, around 11 am when they open. I got there around 11:30 am, and by noon, it was fully packed with no open tables. I ordered the mango red curry with chicken. It was very tasty. I was also surprised that it had a good amount of mango in this dish. The only thing I did not like was that I felt rushed. I think they try to get people in and out as fast as possible to open up tables. Soon after being seated, we were asked if we were ready to order. The food and check are also brought out at the same time. And halfway through eating (we did not pause, we were still taking bites), we were asked if we needed boxes. read more

Wow, the portion sizes are so much smaller now. This was my go-to for a reliable dish. Ordered a curry dish that was way more rice than curry and sauce. My companions suggested it might be due to it being from the lunch menu. I don't know, pretty disappointed. Giving 3 stars (and not less) because the flavor is good, and the white rice is cooked pretty perfectly for me. No complaints about the service or "ambience" such as that is here. read more

Large, casual Thai restaurant near pioneer place mall. Came in on the weekend and got a table along the window. We both ordered their specials I got a lemon grass chicken over vegetables with peanut sauce. My mom got the shrimp and mango veggie dish. We stumbled on this place as we were walking by and went in because we could smell the food. We are so glad we did! The food is excellent, prices are fair, and the service is great too. The inside doesn't look like much; it's an older building that has a musty smell and look, but we didn't care because the food is so good. We ordered the showering rama and it was divine: perfect creamy peanut sauce, with a little spice, and a generous amount of vegetables. The Bangkok roll appetizer was also awesome: balanced crunchiness with the right amount of veggies and sweet sauce. We used to have a Thai restaurant like this in Boise, but it's gone way downhill (food quality greatly declined and increasing prices), so this place made us nostalgic for the excellent Thai food we once had in Boise. This place had been off my radar for years. I used to come here somewhat regularly when I worked downtown back in the 1990's. Then I got transferred to Tanasbourne and I promptly forgot about it even though I live downtown. That's because I'm lazy. It's 1 block from where I work and 1 mile from where I live. Now that I'm working downtown again I'm happy to call myself a regular again. I am still partial to the Pad Thai. It's always a solid choice, and I always leave with leftovers. I was so excited to try Bangkok Palace in downtown Portland, Oregon. I walked in and made my way to wash my hands before sitting down and ordering, but the server immediately put their body between me and the path to the bathroom and vigorously pointed to the dining area incessantly repeating go sit. I responded I would do so after using the facilities, but they refused to remove themselves from my path and they just stood there blocking me until my husband, who was standing in the dining area brought to their attention that I was with him. That's when they finally removed themselves from blocking my path to the bathroom. I must add, my husband is white. I am not. After having some time to reflect on what I had just experienced by this establishment, I decided I didn't want to support a business that denies a customer to attend to a basic human need for hygienic hands. My husband and I both walked out and don't plan on returning. I can only imagine their cuisine being exquisite but I was not given the opportunity to find out due to this abhorrent experience. I trusted the 400+ reviews and 4.5 stars. I should have known better. We were in Portland during the election count weekend, which also happened to be my birthday weekend. Much of the city was closed, and boarded up due to COVID or fears of riots, so I try not to fault the restaurant for that, but even inside, aesthetically, it was awful. Dark from boarded windows and abuzz...with insects, not people. (We were the only silly tourists in the place.) Most of what we ordered was served family-style, and came without rice (odd). I ordered Showering Rama which came with a side of rice. The rice, the least expensive item on just about any menu, came in a very small portion, enough for one person, certainly not enough to share, so I asked the woman, probably one of the owners, for another serving. "You want to order a side of rice?" she asked, passively relaying this comes at additional cost. "Yes, if that's what it takes," I responded. She went away and returned with the rice, set it down of the table, and began calculating. She spouted the cost, looked at me, and waited for payment, as my fork was mid-way between my plate and my mouth. I told her I'd get that for her on my way out, but she insisted on being paid then and there. (A few things to note here: first, we had ordered and paid for the meal at the register prior to taking our seats. Second, we're black. Third, she's asian.) I responded that I wasnt going to deal with money while eating, but she again insisted on being paid the $2 (?) while standing there at our table. Best kept secret...except also incredibly hard to get a seat during the week for lunch hours. Never the less they work incredibly hard to keep a good flow and accommodate everyone. If you're in a hurry take out may be the way to go during the week but otherwise simply phenomenal food. The Pad Thai cannot be made gf however the curry is allergy friendly. ALL Curry's are fantastic! You can't go wrong with any of them, the only difference being spice. The green is pretty spicy naturally but you can add more if you wish, where as the massaman is not spicy but can have some added. The soups are wonderful, they aren't considered a Pho but they are similar and incredibly large portioned. The chicken satay is simply delicious and the dipping sauces are great!! They come with 4 chicken servings per appetizer as do the spring rolls, which are also wonderful!! Seriously no complaints, no short cuts, and even the rice comes served as a star shape to add a little extra touch. It was only 27$ for an app and two meals during lunch. read more

The tables were almost all full , which is not surprising since its downtown and there are a lot of offices around the area. We did not have a wait time however it took a while to get our order in . This was my first visit to this Thai restaurant and I'll be back. The place was packed with a lunchtime crowd. When you check in at the front door you are placed on a waitlist and moved to the other side of the room. Our wait was very short which surprised me due to the packed restaurant. From the moment we entered everyone had a smile. The noise level was low enough to talk to your friends. The food was fantastic. It reminded me of my Asia travels. Since the food carts with Thai options were closed and figured Pok Pok would have a long wait, we decided to come here since it was just a few blocks from our hotel. The nicely decorated restaurant was empty except for one other table on the Sunday afternoon that I visited on. We weren't super hungry so we just had some calamari, egg rolls and Tom Yum soup with vegetables. The calamari was in a weird mozzarella stick type of shape and was encrusted in a ton of crumbs, so the squid was indistinguishable. I wouldn't recommend it. The egg rolls were a little soggy inside from the vegetables but didn't taste bad. I liked the Tom Yum the most. The flavors of citrus, spice, and lemongrass warmed me up on this rainy day and there were nice pieces of tofu, broccoli, carrots and mushrooms. read more

I'm no expert on Thai food, but this restaurant make food that I enjoy and they are quick and efficient. It's one of my go to lunch spots. I like that they place the receipt (upside down) when they serve your food - no long wait when you are done with your meal :) I frequently get their Pad Kee Mao. All of their noodle dishes are very good. Their iced coffee and iced tea are delicious. Nice atmosphere too. It was lunch with my colleagues, and if you're like me, you're a bit suspicious when it comes to 'spicy' food in Portland. They have a selection of dishes that range from mild to very spicy, so I decided to go to level 4. I'm happy to say that yes, it was spicy and I didn't burn my face off. In addition, the staff was super attentive and friendly, even though it was packed. I highly recommend getting reservations or coming super early because it gets busy quickly. It was an absolute disappointed lunch experience for us. My main review today is not about the food quality but it is about the service we were given. The hostess is incredibly rude .I was shocked and speechless. I arrived a little early and while I was waiting for my friend, I was taken to a table with 4 chairs and there were a few tables just like mine, currently occupied with 2 people and also a few empty ones . A little later this hostess came by and asked if I wanted to move to a smaller table right by the door which I politely declined and said I am okay where I am . Unpleasantly, she walked away. A little later after my friend arrived and food was already brought out to us, this same lady came by and interrupted our meal and asked us to move. We looked around and there are still 3 other tables with 2 guests. At this point , we were wondering why she kept asking us to move and interrupting and bothering us while we were trying to enjoy our meals and not asking other people with the same type of tables like the one we have? But we let it go and we moved per her request, anyway . What really took the cake was when we were ready to pay, not knowing she had already left the bill on my table, I flagged her down to ask for the bill, she casted us a sideways glance as if we were bothering her, pointed and said in a very rude manner " OVER THERE" FYI, lady, we were not coming here to beg for a seat or food at the restaurant, we were your customers who supported your 'paycheck'. Please do not treat us as if we were begging for food. Treat customers with respect! I'm really sad to post a meh review when it would have been a 5/5 a year ago. Bangkok Palace used to be my favorite Thai restaurant in PDX specifically because they had the best version of Pad See Ewe. Fresh noodles, wok seared chicken and noodles, great semisweet sauce, etc. Now it seems like they do not cook the dish correctly (no sear, just bland) and the noodles are chewy, undercooked, too thick, store bought garbage...or at least taste that way. I hoped it was just a fluke when I ate there last month, but tried again tonight only to find out that it is the new, worse normal. I can't mark them too much lower...their peanut sauce and salad rolls are excellent. My SO loves the pumpkin panang curry still. But the Pad See Ewe is just not good now...oh and the fried tofu was overcooked and just not good anymore. read more

Great for eat and run even on busiest days. Most people come here for the downtown lunch rush hour and they're very quick to bring food out. The food is pretty good, but I wouldn't say the spot would be a destination unless you are working nearby and need a quick bite. read more
