By far the worst meal I've had in years. My family ordered 1 simple rice and 3 meat meal and 1 garlic beef meal. The first meal was soaked in salt and you could not taste anything beyond that. Bangkok Square was one of my favorites when I was a student at UF. It's a bit of a pricey dinner on a college budget, but their lunch special is actually really decent. For about $10, you get one entree, soup, and a spring roll. Their soup is super simple, but I love it. It's pretty light and garlicky. I could drink 10+ bowls of it. The pad thai, pad see ew, pad ke maw, and the abundance of curry options are all spectacular. The only negative thing I have to say is that their spice levels are very inconsistent. I normally like ordering medium, but I've had it vary so much at Bangkok Square that I just order mild to be safe and am able to enjoy my entree. Be sure to ask for their spice tray, I love the spicy sauce that has chilies in it. It'll add a nice kick if you order it mild. Also, I am not a super big fan of their crispy duck. It's a little more expensive to get and the payoff was not worth it. The duck is pretty dry so you're better off ordering chicken. They end the meal with a little cup of their coconut ice cream so I always leave super happy. read more

Don't be fooled by the fact that they look small from the outside. The inside of the restaurant was very pretty and even with a full house on a Saturday night it wasn't too loud. We started off with the sampler for 2 which was good. The potstickers were my husband and I's favorite. The crab ragoon was very crabby tasting. Not my favorite. I got the drunken noodles and hubby got shrimp in awesome sauce. Both were very good. I ordered mine hot and the spice was perfect. I ordered the crab rangoon, drunken noodle seafood, Tom kha seafood, pad Thai tofu, coconut ice cream, and mango sticky rice. The curry in the crab rangoons stood out to me the most. It was very flavorful. So I suspect their yellow curry dishes are very good. I was also pleasantly surprised with how creamy the coconut ice cream was. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the ingredients in the food. It made it very easy to order there with a pescetarian diet. The menu also indicates what meals are vegetarian/vegan. read more

Bangkok Square is kinda out of the way, past I-75 by a good ten minutes. My fiance and I arrived a little before 7 pm to no wait and were promptly seated. Our timing was perfect because over the next 15 minutes the restaurant filled and became extremely busy. I ordered massaman curry with tofu while my fiance ordered chicken pad thai. These are our favorite thai dishes and often our measure if we'll frequent a place or not. It's true the service isn't quite right. Everyone who waited on us was very nice and never kept us waiting for too long, but the service was hectic and there seemed to be confusion about who was doing what. We got our food after about 25 min and it was delicious! The curry sauce was thick and flavorful and the veggies and tofu were well cooked. The guy also thoroughly enjoyed his pad thai and ate it all in five minutes! When we left there were two groups of people outside waiting for a table. One guy asked as we passed, "How was it?" To start this off, I spent a good chunk of my life in Thailand. My mom is Thai, so I have a good idea of what authenticity tastes like with Thai dishes. That said, I have been to many Thai restaurants and understood that the flavors and concepts have been toned down and/or tweaked to please a Western tongue. Reading the reviews off of here, my mom and I decided to give this place a try...and were both severely disappointed. What she thought was that it was way overpriced for a place that was overhyped and just threw food down on a plate. As for my dish, I ordered the Pad Ba Mee (egg noodle) with crispy duck-- which was so disappointing that I opened a Yelp account just to let the public know that this dish drove a person who sets the bar quite low for Thai restaurants to vent about it. I was served literally packaged ramen. Not even separated in some parts, you could see some small squares where it didn't cook all the way. Come on y'all, at least get the execution right if you can't get the correct ingredients. As for the duck, it was rubbery and not in the least bit crispy. The rest of the dish was sad as well: thevegetables were barely cooked. If I could give this a half a star I would. Through slightly out of the way, you really can't beat their lunch special- one entree served with a spring roll, soup, and a nice little cup of coconut ice cream to cleanse the palate at the end of the meal. I'll start by saying, my wife's meal was worth about 4 stars, when mine was closer to 3. Unfortunately nothing really blew me away here, the Wontons were good, not great, my wife's Pad Thai was actually very good, but I have had better, and my dish really left something to be desired. I cannot seem to remember what my dish was called, but it certainly lacked on the flavor side, although there was a good cook on the Pork, and the noodles came out perfect. The decor here is the first thing that invites you, says, "Hey you've got something special here." Nicely set tables and booths, with a beautiful Thai statue on the bar. Spouse and I have loved Thai food for years, so we tested Bangkok by ordering two of our favorite dishes - green curry (me) and drunken noodles (Spouse), both with squid. Both dishes were well seasoned at a "medium" heat and left our taste buds hungry for more Thai food. Unfortunately neither of us enjoyed the starters -- the chicken rice soup tasted heavily of garlic, and the fresh summer rolls, while beautifully wrapped, contained larger chunks of ingredients than we are accustomed to. (A small point, but we also didn't find the romaine lettuce a good choice for the summer rolls.) We'll definitely be back, but may well just go straight to the main event. read more

Such a great restaurant! I stopped in for lunch while I was traveling for work and was immediately impressed by the interior. At first I thought I was in the wrong place because it had an expensive feel to it but the menu prices reassured me. I got the tofu red curry which came with a spring rolls and soup, both of which were fantastic. I was hoping the curry would be a little spicier but still had a great flavor. I was very pleased with the texture of the tofu (I like it crispier) and didn't have that pasty feel that can come with it. Lunch finished with some coconut ice cream which was a perfect texture to finish out yhe meal! I'm glad I stopped in a little early because there was a huge lunch rush with people waiting outside for a table. After a very tiring day of getting my laundry done and trying to get my van window fixed, I wanted a nice dinner. My patient husband loves Thai food so I looked for suggestions on Yelp and it was very close, since we were traveling and didn't know the area. When we arrived the staff greeted us and found warm protected table for us. I had the cashew-crispy tofu with variety of vegetables in chili sauce-delicious!! My rice arrived in a heart shape while my husband got rice in a star shape with his pork green curry in a creamy spicy sauce. For dessert we had homemade coconut ice cream. Superb!! Finding a good Thai place in Gainesville? Not so easy. This place is the best out of other highly rated Thai restaurants in the area (Bahn Thai and Chopstix). The staff is great--they are friendly and helpful with offering suggestions for vegetarian meals. While they don't have very many vegetarian appetizers (egg rolls and fried tofu), they do have at least one salad, and then a number of dishes that can be prepared veggie. I've had nearly all of the sauteed meals, and the basil and chili sauces (think, sweet chili orange sauce with red pepper) are the best, followed by the sweet and sour. We have also ordered the red curry (rave reviews), pad khee mao, and pad see euw dishes, all of which were spot on, except for the spice level. They do have the typical mild to Thai hot range, but their "Thai hot" just means adding more pepper flakes on top of your food, which = cheating, but at least it's heat, whereas other Thai places in the area don't seem to understand that we like our tongues burnt out of our mouths. The place is absolutely gorgeous. Booths are comfortable, but too close to the table, so if you want some leg room, ask for a table instead. I must mention that the music here drives me bonkers. I think when they opened someone might have given them a sampler CD of five Thai-style songs that all have the same instrumentalist plucking the same instrument to the same tune. I'm all for authentic, but please add some variety. Might I suggest Nichkhun? Overall, they definitely hit the Thai flavor, but they could do more to add spice during cooking instead of after, and someone needs to tell them about Thai pop. read more

My experience wasn't the best, sadly. The food is decent, but if you've ever been to Thailand or had the best Thai food in NY, LA or SF, you will be disappointed. What was even more unforgivable was their lack of service. This place has probably been busy on the weekends for a few months now...so I expected them to have their act together. But no, it wasn't the case. It was severely understaffed so everyone had to wait much longer than you would expect. The only time you got service was when your food was brought out (after 30 mins or so) and if you finally got their attention by standing up (several customers resorted to this) Get your act together. read more

If you order one of their specialties it comes with a nice side salad, too. They are covid safe and have a side entrance for take out pick-up. Recommend the green curry (request mild) and the fried rice is good (similar to Japanese hibachi) (you can order a side of this and it's a good amount). Do NOT get the crab rangoon...trust me. Living in Haile, I always get really excited when a new place opens up west of I-75 and south of Newberry Rd. I was especially excited to see a new thai spot, in a town with very little decent options for thai food! We have been twice and so far we have been impressed. The massaman curry and pad thai were very good. Pad thai is one of those things that is a little different at every restaurant but I like Bangkok Square's iteration. My wife loves the drunken noodles. Someone else used the phrase "good for Gainesville," and I would agree -- this restaurant wouldn't make a top 10 list of thai restaurants in Florida, but it is arguably the best thai place in Gainesville (though the competition isn't fierce). The decor is nice and clean, as you would expect a new restaurant to be. The service was friendly and decently responsive, though we went early (6:00) and there were only 3 other parties dining at the time. I can't speak to the quality of the sushi as I haven't tried it yet. We will be coming back and I hope this place succeeds... need more good restaurants on our side of town! read more

The sudden explosion of Thai restaurants in Gainesville...can't argue with that and about time! However, the dishes I ordered here were flawed. I got the fried tofu appetizer. Boring, but well fried tofu triangles with some plum sauce for $7? Totally uninspired dish. If it was $4 and came with peanut sauce then it would make some sense in my mouth. I saw a picture on Yelp for the crispy fried eggplant in panang curry sauce and had to try it. It came with very thick, round slices of eggplant, tempura style, with fresh veggies and a really creamy, delicious panang sauce. However the execution was way off as the eggplant was tough and undercooked (probably because of the thickness). Maybe some people like their eggplant al dente, but I like when it almost melts in your mouth. I almost didn't want to eat it but noticed that towards the end the eggplant continued to cook and got a little bit softer. Definitely a potential winner if they can get the eggplant right. Oh also this dish somehow goes for $14. Pretty dang steep for a basic eggplant dish. However, I was very happy that they accommodated my request to order a thai iced tea with coconut milk instead of cream. So many places look at me like Im an alien when I ask for this. My parents ordered steam dumplings, which were decent and looked homemade. A seared tuna dish that she thought was good, but not as good as another place in town. And they ordered a ginger chicken stir fry that was decent but nothing remarkable. A word on the service. The restaurant is small and was near capacity. There was only one waiter and he had to be very quick with us and not give us too much attention. But who gives a crap? I go out to eat food not be pampered. And despite his curtness he got everything right and another food runner was very cheerful and our food was brought out in a decent time (20-30 minutes). Also who wants to go to a Thai restaurant and watch CNN? This placed was a mixed bag and I would have given it 2.5 stars, but they get rounded up for being a very pleasant people and atmosphere overall. read more

I've been here quite a lot of times and after today, it has definitely become one of my favorites. I thought their curry and pad thai were mediocre and I'm really not a fan of the Sweet and Sour tofu. It was wayyy too oniony. I recooked it at home and tasted a lot better so I guess it was undercooked? But by far they have the Pad Kee Mao as the most amazing dish. The use of the basil and the sauce was perfect and amazing. The service is quick and fast. I will definitely be visiting this place more often Ok the debate on how to appreciate cultures can be tricky but my general view of seeing how backpackers going to other countries to discover themselves to be pretty disgusting. The fact they think they are going to my country thinking its exotic and they will find enlightenment in that is just so messed up to me. Its like people coming to the US to my yard and saying im here to find enlightenment. Yes it can be difficult to draw the line but I think some people can understand the times when its inappropriate. I think that the people who do decide when appropriation/exploitation are the people who do identify with the culture due to their backgrounds. And I think the thing about the lunch thing is how there is a general cultural shift. That there was a view of finding disgust 5 years ago but now finding it as exotic and amazing. Kinda like how people used to hate the gay culture and now they just take a lot of things from gay culture and make it their own. A good lunch option for SW Gainesville. Bangkok Sq is a mile or two beyond the Archer Rd chain restaurant strip. It is a local spot with unpretentious decor, reasonably efficient service, and an inexpensive lunch menu, Dishes are very nicely prepared and delicately flavored. Lunch special includes soup and spring roll. Well actually I could go without the spring roll, which is a little disappointing, and tastes like they got it at Sams Club. And the service could be slightly faster. But those are small complaints. The main dishes are quite good. Some reviewers have complained about delicate flavors and small portions. That's probably true -- If your idea of Thai Food is a steaming pile of oversalted glop on a styrofoam plate, you should probably head over the Mall instead. Cannot emphasize enough how good the service is here, no waiting forever for a server with an attitude. The staff here is attentive, fast and consistently pleasant. So happy we found this place. This is my second visit here. This restaurant is relatively new to this area. Management and staff is still ironing out some issues such as service. They have been open for a month or so and they have yet to offer speedy service. It is slow. The waiting staff needs to be more attentive otherwise, it will drive patrons away even with the good food that they have to offer here. The food though is actually pretty good. Their curry is top notch. Their beef satay appetizer is both tender and flavorful. The peanut sauce and the side salad that come with the appetizer are mouthwatering additions. Portions of the entrees are pretty large. The duck entrees, albeit, on the expensive side are worth trying out if you are a duck fan. Both the Bangkok Duck and Crispy Duck are both delicious. I also noticed that there were quite a few dishes for the vegetarians out there. I love eating meat, don't get me wrong but if this restaurant only served vegetarian dishes, I would still go back knowing that both their sauces and dry seasoning is what makes their dishes so good. The decor feels very welcoming. The carpeted floors make it more comfy. There are booths along the windows and tables in the center. Parking is easy to find. There are a few businesses in this plaza that are closed around dinner time (after 5pm) so finding parking should never be too much of a hassle. I am going back... To try out their sushi. Thai sushi? Agree with everyone else. Totally. Service was sweet and kind, but sub-par on the basics (silverware, refills). Food was in great portions and of very high quality. Tasted super fresh. Crispy eggplant, as recommended, was awesome, but I'd recommend sharing as it's huge and doesn't reheat very well. But everyone else finished their dishes so no word on that. Oh! Cheap sake, too. Gluten was hiding where it wasn't expected, but we didn't ask, either, with too much assumption. Not their fault, no negativity reflected in this review, but make sure to be super explicit. And they'll be accommodating, as our vegan was taken care of wonderfully. Overall, amazing place for weird eaters. We had a SAD-er, a vegan, a strict vegetarian and a Paleo and we were all perfectly happy and well fed at a totally fair rate.
