I am so glad I tried this place out today. I was craving for a premium sushi rice bowl today, and saw that this restaurant had a Hokkaido don bowl, which had premium scallops from Hokkaido Japan, sea urchin (uni), and red fish eggs (ikura). Soup was included too. It was a decent size bowl with generous portions of each mentioned fish. It tasted mostly fresh, with the uni having the premium silky flavor, the ikura having the briny pop, and the scallops having the buttery texture with a hint of lemon since they sliced it. The rice was flavorful with the added seasonings. It was definitely a luxury splurge. And best of all, it was a great deal for only 30 dollars. The soup was nothing special, but still refreshing and enjoyable. The service was pretty casual, but quick and friendly. The atmosphere is very casual with a limited amount of tables, and the sushi bar is pretty small. When you enter, you would think it was just a counter service or takeout restaurant. At least there was nice Japanese music in the background. This restaurant is a great example of why you shouldn't judge it by it's atmosphere. While it looks so casual and a little boring, their Hokkaido bowl makes it feel luxurious. It was well worth the splurge and such a great deal for 30 dollars. I tried the Sashimi Lunch today. I wasn't too impressed by the texture, color, scent, and flavor of the sashimi here. I think I would have been more satisfied if I had ordered one of their hibachi meals. From looking at other reviews, that seems to be the move! They had daily lunch specials, and I definitely took advantage. I got two normal rolls and I got 1 specialty roll. My total was around 24 for all of it! The employees are kind, but extra clarification was needed. A friend of mine had a food allergy. They asked for a specific item to be taken out and things seemed to be going well. Once his food came out he ate one piece. After that the server came back and said that they didn't take out that food item that he was allergic too. Came in because of the great reviews but it didn't live up to the expectations. Salmon carpaccio was nothing I've ever had. Look at the color of the salmon... it was thick and rubbery. The sashimi cuts I believe should be thinner and easier to consume. It wasn't fresh either. The waiter got upset because I asked to be sat in the back where we wouldn't be infront of the long line of people waiting to be seated. I've been spending a lot of time in Bradford and Alachua counties lately and with that a lot of new-to-me restaurants to explore in new-to-me areas that's a quick jaunt from Jax. One of those new places is Mahzu Sushi and Grill in Gainesville. Sushi spots are a dime a dozen, but Mahzu's offering options I haven't seen on too many sushi menus. First we went full cephalopod for the apps. We got some baby octopus served chilled and tossed in a ponzu-sesame sauce and served on thin strips of cucumber. The other tasty tentacled app was teriyaki marinated grilled squid. The sauces absolutely made the mollusks. Both the octopus and squid were perfectly tender and toothsome, but without those smooth and delicious sauces, it's nothing. The squid in particular was just so good. I couldn't stop eating it. A bite of squid, a few pieces of cucumber to cleanse the palate, and a baby octopus chaser; it was a perfect set of bites. Mah Wife got the salmon skin salad which is a basic side salad topped with crispy salmon skin. And I always get a spider roll every time I get sushi. I just love soft shell crab sushi rolls. We also shared a seaweed salad appetizer which had slivered cucumber in it and it was yummy. The food was brought out quickly and it was nice and hot. We had to ask for dipping sauce for the tempura but received it quickly. The ladies' bathroom is for only 1 person at a time, so there was a wait for each of us to use it. Legitimately my favorite sushi restaurant in Gainesville. The hostess is always kind and friendly but most importantly their sushi is delicious and CONSISTENT. That's what's hard to find at times. Where can you go eat on Christmas Day? We were traveling and found this spot in a shopping strip with 3 other Asian restaurants among other businesses. It's very convenient to the interstate. The staff are friendly and the place was half full with many to go orders being placed and picked up. We were not the only ones wanting their food on Christmas Day! We started with an order of gyoza ($5.50) that were delicious and a California roll ($6) with crunch added. Followed with a spicy tuna California roll and one of their roll specials which had shrimp tempura, tuna and scallop. We also had the scallop hibachi dinner ($19) which we added steak ($5) steak to. Our waitress was incredibly sweet and patient with our indecisiveness. I tried a tangerine pulp sake and wow its dangerous how it tasted like juice and so easy to drink and sip. The shopping center where the restaurant itself is located isn't much but it is well located. Less than 5 minutes from I75. As we were traveling south to Miami decided to make a quick stop for a late lunch and found this sushi place thanks to Yelp. I can see why all the good reviews. The restaurant is not expensive and it has really good sushi and sashimi. Very fresh fish and delicate flavors. Miso soup was very good and the ginger salad a little on the sweet side for the dressing. Sashimi platter, dragon roll, riceless roll and another one that I forget the name were all delicious. My wife and I stopped here based on other reviews. When we walked in I was immediately concerned because it felt like the heat was on or the a/c was broken...and heat with raw fish seems sketchy. So, we tried the lunch special two roll combo and got an eel and avocado roll and a tuna roll to test the quality. The rolls were average but still tasty and the fish wasn't fishy smelling or tasting, so we tried the Dreamy specialty roll. It was average also. The two rolls took about 10 maybe 15 minutes to get and the one specialty roll took about 5, we were very surprised at how fast the specialty roll came out. My wife enjoyed the clear soup we got with the roll combo. Server kept coming by our table checking on us. Had a wonderful dinner here last night to celebrate back to school, and my daughter's and my nephew's birthdays. Six of us ordered 1 appetizer (gyoza), 8 rolls, and 1 shrimp fried rice. We were stuffed but had to get dessert to celebrate the birthdays. We ordered a vanilla tempura ice cream and a green tea tempura ice cream. However, we got 2 free lava cakes with candles for the birthday people, complete with dimmed lights, happy birthday on the sound system and singing by the entire restaurant! It was so much fun!! For the rolls, we ordered: Yummy x 2 Black dragon Volcano Jasmine Wildcat Pacific fried roll I can't remember the name of the last roll but they were all really good. I would definitely order the Black dragon, the Jasmine and the Pacific fried rolls again but my daughter said the Volcano was her favorite! First thing I just wanna say that I'm blown away by how fast they served our food. Ot took about 5 minutes to get our appetizer and as soon as we finished that we got our main course. So well done The food was good, I've had better tasting sushi's. The tempura was really good I especially loved the crust it was so light and fluffy. Our gioza was a little burned and if I could complain on something was the burnt smell in the restaurant. After we mentioned that to the waitress she notified the chef and they turned the ventilation on and the problem was solved. I'm so glad that even after all of these years and the ongoing Pandemic, this place is still moving right along and turning out great food. This place is just as I remembered, with great service and some of my favorite sushi rolls in Gainesville. My go to dish, and what I consider the best bang for your buck, has to be the Spicy Maki Combination. For around $14, you get 3 rolls and soup and salad. Awesome! The Spicy Tuna and Spicy Salmon rolls are always well seasoned, but not overly so. You can still taste the freshness of the fish. Sri will take you a long U turn while you actually can make it shorter. I started grilled mussels. This mussels was prepare with some mayonnaise and cheese sauce on top and grilled. It was prepared with slightly blackened then add the masago on top. It is the best app. My entree is a lunch special. It is sashimi lunch. It has four different fish. Total is 11 pieces. However all pieces is thin. It serve over the radish. The assort fish is average quality. The service is good. The waitress pay a good attention to customer. Since my last review, Mahzu has continued to make delicious, fresh sushi. Their restaurant has been freshly renovated and I love the clean and modern feel of the restaurant which maintained its charm while having a comfortable and cozy dining experience. Dining in at Mahzu is always a great experience as they have friendly service and I do recommend their lunch specials. With that said, I order takeout often from them and they absolutely do a great job with both cold and hot food and it is always the same consistency as when we dine in. I'm really a fan of their salmon and tuna don, Fuji Mountain Roll, and the Green Phoenix. My teenager likes to get the teriyaki chicken bento box which is always so fresh and definitely filling. I definitely recommend checking this Gainesville treasure out. Do not let the strip mall shopping center steer you away. I have come here a couple times over the years when we would come up for games. It's always been a place that I enjoyed and was less known so easy to get into despite game weekend crowds. Unfortunately, this visit was not as good for both the food and service. We stopped in after a game and were excited to gets some food and warm up. We ordered the chicken teriyaki and 2 bowls of the Nani Yaki Udon. The udon came with an option of soup or salad & the teriyaki came with both. The miso soup was good and the ginger salad was ok, the dressing lacked a little zip that I remember from previous visits. The chicken teriyaki was good, it had a lot of sauce and came out nice and hot. The udon was large with a decent amount of noodles and vegetables. Other than that it was very bland & did not come with a tray of a variety of spices/flavors to add to it, we didn't eat much other than enough to warm us up. The tempura shrimp on the side were actually the best part of the dish. We should have stuck with the sushi which was what we ate on other trips. As for service, it was initially very good and the staff was friendly and service was quick. However our server decided to help put our leftover soup (didn't really want it) in the to-go containers and proceeded to the drop the whole container on my mother. Luckily it wasn't hot and a honest mistake but then there was no attempt at recovery by him or the restaurant. He got napkins to clean the table but didn't offer them to clean up the person he spilled on, tried to laugh off the event, no one else came over to help or a manager to apologize and then there was no offer to adjust or compensation us for someone with soaked (4 cups worth) with soup. We asked and the waiter came back and said his manager could only offer 10% off (not even the cost of the soup). We just payed our bill and left as we were still in shock by the lack of an attempt to provide any service recovery.
