    Spring rolls

The service here was great and very quick, with the spring rolls coming out super hot and the sushi super fresh. The ambiance was nice, a very quiet little place for lunch. The food was good but I've definitely had better sushi elsewhere.

I loveeeeee this place. My favorite sushi spot in Gainesville. Service is always amazing, staff is so sweet and attentive. It's a cute little quiet spot. Highly highly highly recommend! Food is always so fresh and comes out fast

    Sashimi Lunch

I tried the Sashimi Lunch today. I wasn't too impressed by the texture, color, scent, and flavor of the sashimi here. I think I would have been more satisfied if I had ordered one of their hibachi meals. From looking at other reviews, that seems to be the move! The service was quick in terms of placing the order, and receiving the food. The quality was one of the biggest let downs since it fell short compared to other sushi restaurants I've been to in Gainesville. I consider myself to be a sushi fanatic - I've tried almost all of the restaurants locally. The lunch combos are priced fairly, but there seems to be a spectrum of quality.

Decided to check out this place. First of all, they have a decent lunch special and you can get sushi for an affordable price from Mon- sat between 11-3pm. For example, basic 3 sushi rolls for ~$15 or sushi/sashimi plate for $18. The quality of sushi is mediocre at best though, which is understandable given affordable price.. Servers were nice and attentive. Good place to consider for affordable lunch sushi deals!

Ordered the *Sushi & Sashimi for Two it is delicious. Salad not so much. Miso was good too. Atmosphere is quiet.

Such friendly service I would highly recommend my server but unfortunately forgot her name - sorry! Food came promptly and was high quality and delicious. Got the Williston Roll and green salad while my daughter got steak fried rice and miso soup. Would highly recommend and definitely plan to come back! Prices were affordable too. Our bill was $30 before tip

They had daily lunch specials, and I definitely took advantage. I got two normal rolls and I got 1 specialty roll. My total was around 24 for all of it! The employees are kind, but extra clarification was needed. A friend of mine had a food allergy. They asked for a specific item to be taken out and things seemed to be going well. Once his food came out he ate one piece. After that the server came back and said that they didn't take out that food item that he was allergic too. Luckily he didn't eat too much of it and they remade his order, but they definitely should have been more careful especially when he mentioned it the first time. Overall the experience was good. I'd go back again, but just be careful if you have an allergy or a dietary restriction.

Food: 3/5 Dragon & Rainbow Rolls - it was "ok" for Florida Minimal ginger given although it was fresh Svc: 4/5 Promptly seated/brought drinks/took order (in and out in less than 30 mins) Ambiance: 3/5 clean but too bright for dinner, quiet enough for easy conversation. Music: top 40 (2) Miso Soup (2) Rolls $40 after tip

Came here on a whim and were so happy with our decision! From the outside, it doesn't look like much but the inside is gorgeous! It was packed too, which is always a great sign! The server was so friendly and helpful with our selections! The food came out fast and was delicious! Everything was really so flavorful and tasted fresh. The yum yum sauce is really good too! Would definitely come back here again!

This is a great Sushi place in Gainesville. Always fresh and delicious. This is our favorite spot in town!

    Sashimi

Came in because of the great reviews but it didn't live up to the expectations. Salmon carpaccio was nothing I've ever had. Look at the color of the salmon... it was thick and rubbery. The sashimi cuts I believe should be thinner and easier to consume. It wasn't fresh either. The waiter got upset because I asked to be sat in the back where we wouldn't be infront of the long line of people waiting to be seated. The couple who came after us got their order taken before us because of this. It was overall not a good experience.

I've been spending a lot of time in Bradford and Alachua counties lately and with that a lot of new-to-me restaurants to explore in new-to-me areas that's a quick jaunt from Jax. One of those new places is Mahzu Sushi and Grill in Gainesville. Sushi spots are a dime a dozen, but Mahzu's offering options I haven't seen on too many sushi menus. First we went full cephalopod for the apps. We got some baby octopus served chilled and tossed in a ponzu-sesame sauce and served on thin strips of cucumber. The other tasty tentacled app was teriyaki marinated grilled squid. The sauces absolutely made the mollusks. Both the octopus and squid were perfectly tender and toothsome, but without those smooth and delicious sauces, it's nothing. The squid in particular was just so good. I couldn't stop eating it. A bite of squid, a few pieces of cucumber to cleanse the palate, and a baby octopus chaser; it was a perfect set of bites. Mah Wife got the salmon skin salad which is a basic side salad topped with crispy salmon skin. And I always get a spider roll every time I get sushi. I just love soft shell crab sushi rolls. Go try out Mahzu's. Definitely get the cephalopods

It is very mellow and more on the well lit side, so if you want a dim lit restaurant, this ain't for you. Service? Impeccable, I forgot the girl who served us, but sis was always on point. Consider your drinks refilled! When it comes to food, understand that the sushi chef takes his time to craft art on your plate. Like seriously, look at the images I share, it's a masterpiece isn't it? So do expect a bit of a wait time but don't you worry, the fish are fresh! So order an appetizer why don't you, to keep ya tummy occupied whilst you wait. My partner and I started off with the seaweed salad and edamame. The edmame is heavy with the garlic, so do keep in mind that your breath will smell like jarlic ok? You have been warned. You could also make the edmame spicy, but that's an extra charge! The seaweed salad? It has a bit of twang to it, so it's lightly sour. No overpowering though like the ones you'd have at a grocery store. Now the star of the dinner my bae and I had... The spicy yellowtail was not that spicy for me, by partner though? He had to take his break hahaha. He got baby taste buds. It is fresh, and for you texture girlies, it is mushy. So, yeah, you may want to opt out on that if you are not a fan of cold mushy food. The big Mac roll? It was so good. All the flavors combined and dances on your tongue. In a good way though loves. In a good way. This one is not so mushy as the spicy yellowtail, you can tast the blend of different textures of the sushi. And they complete one another. The king lobster roll! Boy was this one good. So for you lobster lovers, this is a must have. There's good chunk of the lobster meet in each bite, so do expect a blend of flavors mt seafood lovers. Expect that.

We arrived later on a Saturday night craving hibachi and sushi, and it definitely hit the spot. I ordered the steak hibachi with fried rice, and my husband went with the lobster roll. My meal started with a cup of miso soup and if you follow our adventures you know I love miso. They did not disappoint. It was hot, flavorful, and tasted freshly made with good ingredients. For a drink I ordered a Long Drink. We first tried these at a local festival and fell in love, so when we saw a citrus flavor we had never tried before we were excited to order it. My hibachi came out hot and smelled amazing. The steak was cooked perfectly and the sauce mixed into the rice was really good. I do wish they gave just a little extra sauce for the rice. The rice itself was a bit stiff, but the sauce helped a lot. We also came about an hour before closing, so we were not too bothered by that. Our waitress was good, and her coworker stepped in to help when she was busy, which we appreciated. I also liked that you can see the sushi chefs working right there, and my husband really enjoyed his roll. The restaurant was very clean, including the bathrooms, which always matters. I also have to mention the water because it actually tasted good. If you know, you know how rare that can be. They also have plenty of parking, which makes things easy. Overall we had a great experience and it was the perfect spot for a much needed date night.

The service was great, our chef was funny and entertaining (though I was sad that he didn't do the onion volcano!) and our waiters were nice. I got the chicken hibachi and my total came out to be a little over $20 after tip which for the amount of food we got, was definitely worth it in my opinion. The food itself was good, my only complaint would be it was a little too salty for my taste. Everything was still really good! Just a little too salty in my opinion. From the time we sat down to the time we got our food, we were not waiting that long at all and the servers were very nice. To be fair, we went on an extremely busy Friday night with graduations and events happening all over town. When we arrived, we were quoted a 20-25 minute wait, which ended up being closer to 45 minutes. Things happen, especially on nights like that, so we rolled with it. After we were seated, though, it was pretty quiet for another 15-20 minutes before anyone came over. Finally, a young waitress came up and jokingly said, "Well, I guess I'm your waitress now," and apologized several times. Honestly, I appreciated the honesty because it genuinely felt like they may have been short staffed or had someone quit unexpectedly. Having worked in restaurants myself when I was younger, I know how chaotic nights like that can become, so I really tried to give them grace. Once things got going, the experience definitely improved. The chef was incredibly nice, and I was honestly disappointed that I missed recording his sweet egg flip on camera! Little by little, our meal came together and everything was cooked really well. The filet was absolutely delicious, and my favorite part of the meal was honestly the noodles. The chicken was also really good, and I happily took the leftovers home for lunch the next day. The miso soup had plenty of fresh vegetables and ingredients, which I appreciated. My only real suggestion for next time would be to at least bring waters to the table while people are waiting because I was incredibly thirsty by the time everything started moving. Also, I am sorry to the chef because I completely forgot to bring cash for a tip! Just as an FYI for anyone visiting, you can tip the hibachi chef separately too. And listen, it would have been a full five stars if we got the classic saki squirted into our mouths, but maybe that was just a "north" thing from back home in Massachusetts. Totally joking... kind of. Overall, we will definitely be back. Just know that if you visit on a super busy night, you should absolutely expect a wait. Also, it can get a little smoky inside during peak hours, so if that bothers you, it may not be the best fit.

He was so entertaining creating huge fires and doing all types of tricks with the egg and all. He really put on a good show. Way better than last year's chef who had no personality. We received huge portions of food - which I can't complain about since it's great leftovers for the next day. I usually order the Imperial with filet mignon but went with chicken and shrimp. The chicken is cooked in some type of teriyaki sauce I believe. It was really flavorful and good and not sweet. The shrimp was plump and fresh. One downside I will say it when the chefs are cooking, they need to immediately turn on the fans because it can get very smoky in the area. Honestly it was a good turnaround from last year's experience.
