I am a HUGE Banh Mi fan. And...I am really picky. Most places get the bread wrong... lack flavor...and generally just don't understand what it is that Maes this such a great sandwich. Banh Mi Boy gets it all right. The bread is great and so are all the fillings. What they do different is offer some non-traditional Banh Mi that are spectacular. the Pho Beef Bahn me is like taking a bite of Pho. It tastes exactly like Pho if it were a sandwich. The curry Chicken is also great...not traditional, but just delicious. The Vietnamese Sausage is spicy and delicious as well. They also have Pho on certain days as well as a lemongrass soup that is very delicious. The place is clean and the staff friendly. The ONLY quibble is they don't put enough cilantro on...but as long as you ask, they'll load it up with as much of the toppings as you like! When I moved to this area from the West Coast, one of my first goals was to find the best Asian food in the area. After trying a few different banh mi sandwiches, it became clear that Banh Mi Boy was definitely the best in town. The bread is what really sets them apart from the other places I've tried. It's got a good crunchy exterior but still soft enough where I don't feel like I'm going to hurt my jaw eating it. Wow! I was pretty impressed by the flavors in my chicken sandwich I got for lunch today! I was a bit skeptical at first, but I thought I'd give it a try. It's pretty much your typical vietnamese sandwich shop and have the usual stuff. One thing I was bummed that wasn't on the menu was the lemon grass pork chops that I LOVE, so I settled with the chicken sandwich. The chicken is breast meat and very flavorful! Super nostalgic and tasted just like the one I got all the time in my younger years in Hawaii. Bread was delicious and they toast it before all the ingredients go into the sandwich, a very important step a lot of places skip. Now that's what I call quality in this sandwich! Vegetables included the sweet and tangy pickled carrots and daikon (raddish) and cucumbers and cilantro. They also add sirracha and mayo. IMO, I'd found a great place in Delaware to get my Bahn Mi fix! Kind of excited! The one downside in my meal was the iced coffee I had ordered. For some reason, the dairy in it started to clump up making it displeasing to finish. Other than that, I'd still return and try the other sandwiches. I've been meaning to try this place for the last few months and we finally got around to heading into Newark to try it. There are a few parking spots in the lot behind the building that are reserved for the restaurant and a few street spots just before it on that block. We didn't have any trouble finding a spot early on a Saturday, but I can imagine it being harder during "prime time". The owner is incredibly nice. He gave our daughter a little treat which was completely unnecessary and very nice. I had the original and my wife had the pork belly. The bread was great. Nice crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The original was great. Good amount of meat and nice pickled veg on top. My wife enjoyed the pork belly as well. I'd definitely say go for the whole. Banh Mi is a Vietnamese staple sandwich. Being half Viet, I've tried all kinds of these baguettes across the world. (Thanks to my parents). I decided to order the Pork Belly. My bread was overly toasted with little meat that contained no flavor. Even the carrots and radishes overflow the sandwich itself and it wasn't even pickled enough to what I'm used too. I thought it was quite bland. My boyfriend had the summer rolls and he too was disappointed. He rather prefers my aunts rolls over this and she can't even cook well! Don't get me wrong, it wasn't that awfully bad. I still managed to finish just half of it. This business, in my opinion is more altered to be "Americanized" than it is authentic. I love Banh Mi Boy! It's difficult to find good Vietnamese food that's walking distance from campus. This place is clean, the owners and staff are super friendly, and I really enjoy their banh mi. It's a little "expensive" for those who are used to $2 banh mi, but hey, this isn't Cali where there's a banh mi shop on every corner competing with prices. But all in all, they are still well priced compared to other eateries. Delaware is lucky to have such an establishment along with Ramen Kumamoto and Duck's Donuts. The sandwiches are not completely authentic (no headcheese) and I've never seen pork belly or pho banh mi before, but the sandwiches are delicious and hits the spot every time :) Some people find the fillings a bit on the lighter side. I personally think that most sandwich places overstuff their sandwiches, which ruins it for me. If you prefer more meat, I'm sure you can ask for double meat, which will cost a little extra. My favorites are the pork belly and the original with extra jalepenos. I also enjoy their vietnamese coffee and coconut milk dessert drink. I'm a big fan of banh mi and have been for well over a decade. And as much as I support mom and pop establishments, I can't say I'm a big fan of the business model here. Note, I use the words "business model" and not simply "business". The food quality is fine, the sandwiches aren't really authentic (curry? meatballs?) but still retain the spirit of a banh mi. What I can't stand are the extreme prices relative to the amount of food they give you. I absolutely loath this type of business model. My friend and I ordered two whole sandwiches - curry and roast pork. We also ordered the summer rolls. The typical prices you see for these items at Vietnamese restaurants in a typical Vietnamese enclave in large cities like LA, Houston, or New Orleans are usually $2.95 for a whole sandwich and $1.00 for a single summer roll. A typical Vietnamese restaurant else where would go $3.95 for a whole sandwich and $3.99 for an order of two egg rolls. Sandwiches usually have a meat-veggie ratio of 6:4. For summer rolls, you can easily spot the half slices of shrimp laying on top of slices of roasted pork. At this place, they charge you a range of $5-7 for a whole sandwich and almost $6 for TWO summer rolls with no visible pork!!! Those are the highest prices I've ever seen for a banh mi and summer roll ANYWHERE. On top of that, the meat-veggie ratio in the sandwiches are 2:8. I ordered the roast pork sandwich and had to dig through the piles of veggies just to see the meat underneath it. Come on guys! This is not how you run a business! If you're charging this outrageous price, at least give a little more meat to make this into a legitimate banh mi! If you're charging almost $3 for one summer roll, at least put some pork in it, as advertised. Don't con the customers! read more

Wondering around in Newark for something to eat! Being as though Newark is mainly a college town I knew I could find some good cheap eats on Main Street. I had been reading the review of the posters in regards to this place here on Yelp and just had to try it. I ordered the pork belly banh mi and a mango bubble drink. The banh mi was delicious! The roll was nice and toasted, and it had a sweet/sour pickled carrot mixture over the tender meat. Oh my gosh! The bubble drink was yummy as well. For both items I paid $9 (not bad). Friendly people, fast service, and tasty sandwiches with a reasonable price tag have made Banh Mi Boy one of my usual lunch spots. Place your order at the counter and then have a seat. Most food seems to come out within 5 minutes of ordering. While the vegetarian banh mi is not the best I've ever had, it's pretty darn good. It's a warm baguette pilled high with pickled radish and carrots and has fried tofu, a little cilantro, a couple of thin slices of jalapeno, and finished with a tasty vegan mayo. It's satisfying, but not too heavy. The larger size (whole roll) is only $5.75. I love to pair it with the pearl milk tea chilled with light ice. It is creamy and slightly sweet. The bubbles have been pretty consistent as well. I tried the lemongrass tofu banh mi, but I enjoyed the original vegetarian one far more. This is because the tofu used in the lemongrass one is different, and I prefer the crispier texture. I'd like to try some of their salads in the future. They also have some stir-fry that sounds interesting as well. The staff here is really nice and brings the food out to your table quickly. The older gentleman who I assume might be the owner, is especially kind. He's brought napkins to my table before when he saw there wasn't a napkin container at my table, and has also taken my trash for me, even though this is the kind of place where you take your own. They have a lot of Japanese sweets and snacks here for sell like Pocky and wasabi peas. I like the clean white and orange decor and the cheery vibe. I ordered a full size roast pork bahn mi and it exceeded expectations. The roast pork was delicious, and the mix of spices and veggies all balanced eachother in an unusual but delicious way. For dinner, a full size banh mi was definitely filling (without being too much or too heavy) and well worth the $4.99. Compare it to a $5 foot long sub at subway and the quality and flavor are just so much better and fresher for the same price, plus you get something unique that you couldn't make at home. I definitely did not have a problem with the price or the amount of filling in my sandwich. The filling was falling out there was so much!! It seems like the kind of place you could bring a friend or a laptop or a book and chill with a drink or your meal for awhile. My new favorite place to stop by in Newark, DE, while visiting my boyfriend's family for the holidays! There are not many Vietnamese places where I live, so I'm thrilled to have found this little gem. Their menu is concise and isn't overwhelming. Employees are friendly and hospitable. I asked for carrots to add to my 'Pho Sandwich' order, and they were happy to accommodate. Milk and bubble tea, different assorted Asian pickled salad, vegetables (e.g. kim chi), drinks, and desserts (e.g. Pocky, Vienna French cookie, Yan Yan) are also available to purchase. I didn't have a chance to drink bubble tea here, but plan to next time I visit. Last but not least, coffee lovers must try/have Vietnamese coffee!! Both iced and hot (drip) are delicious. If you fall in love - you can buy the coffee, filter, and condensed milk to have at home!! All in all, I hope business picks up once more people realize how delicious Vietnamese sandwiches are! I've been here twice. Both times I was satisfied. The first time I got the standard banh mi slampiece with roasted pork. It was good, had fresh ingredients, and the bread was solid. It didn't quite fill me up though. However, it was def worth the price of like 5 bucks. Second visit was better. I got the rice platter with a different meat -- the Vietnamese sausage. It looked weird but that doesn't bother me. It was good and it filled me up and it was only $6.50. The siracha sauce helped and the carrots, cucumbers, and jalopenos were fresh. Overall, solid lunch place -- it's just a little too far for me. Heads up though, Nickelback came on when I was there, which threw me off a little bit. The bread is lightly crispy/toasted on the outside, still soft on the inside (other places have ruined my initial opinion of a banh mi sandwich bc the bread was wayyyyy too tough to rip/bite off). I just wish they filled the sandwiches more to offset the thickness of bread. They give a generous amount of rice in the rice platters. Again, wish they gave more meat/veggies. The pickled carrots and daikon is good (I always order some on the side for snacking). I have had the pork, meatball, and roast prok bánh mì's, which are all good. The lemongrass soup is to die for and not for sharing (get you own!). The shrimp and pork summer rolls are good and filling, but you'll be hungry later. I love a good banh mi so I knew I had to try this place before leaving the area. It has a nice bright interior and offers quick service. While the menu is not very extensive, they serve a tasty banh mi on a good baguette, with crisp veggies and a nice amount of pate. I enjoyed my taro bubble tea as well; it was not too sweet and had just the right number of tapioca pearls.
