Bangkok House in Newark is one of those places that reminds you why small, family-run restaurants are irreplaceable. From the outside, it's humble and easy to miss. But once you're inside, you realize this mother-and-daughter team is serving some of the most authentic Thai food you'll find anywhere in Delaware. We ordered a little bit of everything--starting with the satay and soup, both of which were warm, flavorful, and clearly homemade. The satay came perfectly grilled with a peanut sauce that could have been a meal on its own. The soup was the kind of comfort you don't expect to find unless someone's cooking for you at home. The Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mao were both outstanding, each with its own distinct balance of sweetness, spice, and texture. You could tell nothing came out of a jar--the flavors were bright, clean, and layered. The red curry, rich and aromatic, had that perfect slow-building heat that keeps you reaching for more jasmine rice. And speaking of rice--it was cooked just right, fragrant and fluffy, the quiet star that pulled everything together. What makes Bangkok House truly special isn't just the food, though. It's the feeling you get while you're there. The care that goes into each dish, the relaxed, no-frills setting, and the pride this family takes in their craft all come through in every bite. My daughter, who goes to college nearby, swears it's the most authentic Thai food in Delaware--and after this meal, I believe her. If you're anywhere near Newark, skip the big-name places and come here instead. I walk in, its completely empty. I ask to dine in so I'm told to sit anywhere. Looking over the menu, 2 people come in and they're already being served water and wine. No one has come to ask me for anything, let alone water brought to table. Not sure if I should just walk out or continue waiting? Okay finally someone realized I'm sitting here staring at them. I ordered vegetarian spring rolls and pad kee mow with chicken. Luckily I had a water bottle in my bag so byow? They didnt ask spice level, so I'm just hoping it's not bland. Fingers crossed! Interior is dated, but who cares if the food is good, right? There are pictures strung up along the wall, has a very homely feeling. People have started to come in, looks like like people definitely order take out from here. They have a very very small wine list, but nice to know they do serve! Ok, so food was flavorful! Spring rolls were PIPING HOT. Too hot to eat immediately, heck even too hot by the time I was done with my noodles! They were large in size, crispy and filled with veggies. Second time ordering takeout and both times received great food! Ordered yesterday and they did not have any duck, which is my favorite. I find out that they order fresh roasted duck and were freshly out. I did not mind, since it tells me that they do not use frozen duck, which is good! The food is probably the best I've had outside of New York and Bangkok, but in the four times I've been here, it's gone really down hill. The food is the same. Pretty good, but three times over three weeks no Diet Coke. Then three of the four times you sit waiting for service as they are in the kitchen. Even the ladies sitting at the bar, wanting to leave had to yell out for someone to come out, even that didn't work. This is my favorite thai restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware. I must admit to being a one hit wonder when it comes to thai food. It's chicken with basil or nothing. There's is one of the tastiest and best values. If you can't handle spicy hot food be careful, this one is hotter than other hot dishes My addendum. I came here for lunch on a super hot summer day. Whose idea was it to go get spicy Thai food when it's 90 degrees out? But I digress ... firstly, I liked the casual but authentic feel of the décor. It wasn't necessarily fancy or well-done, but it felt homey in a good way. I've also been to Thailand and eating here felt like an authentic cultural experience. (But maybe I'm just projecting my bias and expectations onto reality?...) When our group arrived, there weren't any others in the restaurant so we expected it to be fast. We ordered two appetizers--dumplings and lettuce wraps (with the lettuce chopped up; also unexpectedly super spicy)--and that took around 30 minutes to come out. We waited another 20 minutes for our main entrees (and we had a group of 4). The quality of the food was very good. I ordered the Pad Kee Mouw (sp?) which was essentially drunken noodles, with the long and flat wide noodles with green beans, peppers, and basil. It was way spicier than I expected but the flavor was really good and the vegetables were cooked to a nice texture. It took awhile for our waitress to come back with the bill so we felt that the service wasn't great--especially considering there weren't any other people eating when we had arrived, and were only 3 other groups by the time we left. I've driven pass this restaurant for years "wilmingtonian" and never took the time to stop. A friend suggested I go knowing how I love spicy food. Upon entering I thought to myself "why the plaid table clothes and where is everybody". ordered the Pad see euw with shrimp (large shrimp) and chicken fried rice ...WOW-O-WOW the food was great. I came back the very next day for dinner and there were people sitting at the tables drinking and laughing. I ordered take-out same 2 dishes. Several people came in picking up their orders. Our first minutes in the restaurant was a little strange - when we stepped inside the dim, run down looking restaurant, there was no one to be seen (no customers nor workers). After walking around the restaurant in search of a living soul and saying "hello?" a couple of times, someone eventually came out and briefly acknowledged us. Although we felt like we were intruding on someone's house, we decided to seat ourselves and wait until they were ready to serve us. What they lacked in customer service was made up in the quality of their food. Their lunch specials were reasonably priced; most dishes were $10, while the shrimp dishes were $11. Each meal came with a little side of salad and thai peanut sauce. Since we were the only people in the restaurant, our food came out in a very short amount of time. We ordered the beef pad kee mao (drunken noodle) and beef pad see yew, and both were amazing in flavor. The pad kee mao was more savory, with explosions of flavor in my mouth. I spent some time in Thailand last summer, and frequently eat at Thai places in the US, and I have to conclude that this meal was one of the best Thai meals that I have eaten! The portions were rather generous as well; I could have brought half of my food home, but it was so delicious that I decided to eat the whole thing all at once. I wish that I could give them five stars based off food alone, but a lot of people do enjoy eating out to experience a fun atmosphere and good customer service. This is prolly one of the best Thai food restaurant I have ever been to. Like most Thai restaurant there are some similarity between the food that is serve, however, to be able to incorporate a special item that enhances the dish greatly, I believe this is the first restaurant to be able to do that. Take one item from their menu, for example, the Pad Thai, usually it is a stir fried noodle infuse with some kind of protein, however, at this restaurant, the addition of eggs makes the dish 10x better than the original. I was very pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. I ordered online then went to pick it up. I'm not from Wilmington but the area isn't as nice as the Riverfront area. The restaurant looks like it used to be a bar that the owners just added tables to. It doesn't matter because the food was good!! Chicken satay: nicely seasoned but it didn't come on a stick. I'm used to it on the stick. I didn't use the dipping sauce so I can not speak on it. The chicken is also a lot thinner than when I get satay from other places. Spring rolls: this was average. Nothing special but I still liked them. Chicken pad thai: I asked for it to be spicy and they didn't disappoint. Everything was fresh. This was solid. Shrimp Drunken Noodle: yes..yes..yes. shrimp was plentiful and huge. Cooked to perfection. The veggies were all fresh and crispy. I would definitely return when I'm DE. Was in Delaware for a business trip and was craving some Asian food so decided to do a quick yelp search around the hotel and found this place with decent reviews although many recent reviews had not been written. I placed a call for a take out order and made my way over to pick up the food. I ended up placing an order for a Pad See Ew and fresh spring rolls to try out a few different things to give this a fair chance. The restaurant itself is definitely in an interesting/unique area and definitely may not be for everyone. The area seems to have seen better days but parking was completely open in front of the restaurant. I made my way in to the joint and literally was the only person to walk in and no other guests were around. The restaurant itself has also seen better days and is very run down which did not bother me as I have had THE BEST food from some run down places in my past. There was only one person in the kitchen and one person working the registers and she immediately told me that my food was being worked on which led me to believe I was the only patron for the day thus far. I waited 5-10 minutes and the food came out. The person at the register was friendly enough but she seemed not very interested in chatting much more. I quickly paid and brought my food out to eat. The Pad See ew was OK and the Spring rolls were just OK as well. I think there is a lack of options in DE so this place is probably on the better side but everything was just so so for me. Not real Thai food. Might be Americanized Cantonese Chinese food. I ordered pad Kee Mao and a soup, they are too sweeeeeeet. The soup was supposed to be sour with a hint of sweetness but it tasted like half lb of sugar was used. The Pad Kee Mao is not cooked Thai way, it's like Cantonese a flat noodle stir fry. As a person who loves Thai & the fact that this spot is 5 mins from my house I'm not sure why I don't go more!!! The pad Thai with shrimp is my absolute favorite! Even when you get take out the food is always piping hot & just as yummy as if you stayed In the restaurant to eat. I also like the shrimp shu mi! Eh, I don't know. Bangkok House is in Wilmington and it's been there since at least 1990. I wouldn't have expected to get serviceable fish cakes and mostly acceptable seafood anywhere in the city. So, sure, if you have the misfortune to live in Delaware, and if your cupboard is bare, Bangkok House is a step up from almost anything else you're likely to find in-state. You know the type: fish cakes had flavor...and a lot of oil. Dipping sauce was OK...but not great. Seafood wasn't particularly exciting (though a pretty high quantity of seafood that probably needed to be disposed of within the next 36 hours), and I can make a soggy bed of bell peppers myself. I just can't reasonably see myself visiting this place again with any particular excitement. Nor can I see myself recommending it to anyone with any particular fervor. Which is why I'm not recommending it to you. I will say, however, that service is not notably "slow," as some reviewers aver, unless you're comparing it to Delaware's consumer retailer and outfitter of choice, Burger King. I mean, I wish the waitress had attended to me with more eagerness, but who's to blame her? She was being treated to the Saga of Trying to Find the Appropriate Electrical Cord at K-Mart by a man at the bar who looked like he hadn't been out of the house since 1977. read more

Yes, for most of us that have eaten anywhere else in the U.S. On my two visits, both times, I spent four times the amount waiting for my food than eating it. I've lived in Wilmington for 6 years and I just found out about this place recently. It's not in the best neighborhood, unoticable exterior and subpar interior. WITH THAT SAID, the food is great!! It's soooooooooooooooo hard to find decent asian food in Wilmington and this is the best Thai food in the city in my opinion. The BEST Thai food in Delaware. We had dinner here for my birthday; hubby was afraid that I was going to be disappointed. Completely thrilled with the food - neighborhood is just ok. Lots of people ordered take-out - many stayed and ate in the cozy dining room. Our server was nice and very attentive. Pad thai was to die for! I went with a co-worker not expecting much as I am very particular about Thai food. I started with Thai Tea with Milk (Cha Yen), I made sure it was Thai tea and not Lipton, the waitress confirmed it was, so I went ahead and ordered it. Very impressed, as it is just as good as if I was in Thailand, good start. We then ordered the Tom Kha Gai (Chicken soup with coconut milk), Larb Gai (Ground Chicken Salad), excellent appetizers. For the main course, we ordered Kra Pao Gai (Chicken with Basil and Chilies) and Pad Kee Mao (Broad rice noodle fried with Basil and Chicken). As we waited for the main course, I am a bit concerned because thus far the food has been too good to be true. I was expecting something to go wrong or one of the dishes to be a bit disappointing. Our anxiety was unwarranted as the main courses were delicious. Ambience was warm, simple with an essence of Thailand. The food here is great and reasonably priced! I ordered chicken with spicy basil sauce and it was full of flavor and lots of delicious basil leaves. The menu is organized by spicy, mild, and house specialties, which I thought was an informative lay-out. I recommend going spicy and balancing it out with a refreshing Singha. I also suggest ordering appetizers and consider sharing amongst your table, as food is brought out as it is ready. If I had just gotten take-out from BH, this would probably be a 5 star review. Although our server was friendly, service was very slow. Upon receiving our entrees, we asked for water refills, which took about 5 minutes to get. (That is not what you want when you have spicy dishes.) Also, we were given a rather small serving of rice to be split between four of us. I've lived down the street from Bangkok house for a year now and just finally tried it and boy have I been missing out. My husband and I both had curry. I had the Panang and the name of his slips my mind but it had shrimp and chicken and it was delicious. Couldn't wait to eat the leftovers for lunch today. I had driven by for years and finally stopped in on the recommendation of a friend who had spent time in Thailand. The food was simple, tasty and in the case of my seafood dish, quite spicy. Our starter of chicken dumplings was good as well, with a more subtle flavor than most other places. The Thai beer on the menu was new to me and also very good. Prices are very reasonable. On the saturday evening I was there it was not crowded at all, which was good since there was only one server who also seemed to be doing some work back in the kitchen. It is a family owned and run restaurant so I went in expecting that. Things like water refills did take some time. My only big complaints were the fact that the bathrooms had napkins instead of paper towels and we were charged when was asked for more rice for the table (only $2 but it was still annoying since I am sure every table gets the same size bowl regardless of group size). Regardless, I will be going back to try more of the menu. As a final note, our server mentioned they will be opening for lunch in November as well as adding sticky rice to the menu. read more
