Peter and his son were 50 mins late to my event. The event started at 4:30pm and he didn't arrive until approximately 5:10pm. I texted him at 4:30 asking if he was on the way and he said yes. I then asked for an ETA and he said 30 mins away. If you're scheduled for a 4:30pm event and show up almost an hour late, the least you can do as a catering service is to communicate. I had the expectation that he'd arrive at least 15 mins earlier to set up. He didn't offer any apology upon arrival either. He also added a 20% tip on top of the original cost for 50 banh xeos without me realizing it until after the fact, so I ended up paying him more than expected. I'll start by saying I can wholly appreciate a small independently owned Asian American business. Further, I absolutely love the flavors and textures of the tritip and banh xeo (some at my party said it's the best they have ever had) -- hence the two stars. That being said, I have to give some honest and hopefully constructive feedback. My family's event was our grandfather's death anniversary featuring 35 guests. My uncle scheduled this far in advance, specifying a time and quantity. But how does someone justify arriving at 7 pm when we booked a 5 oclock event? Well when asked why, he simply replied, "Do you want me to leave?" How does someone justify this kind of attitude? Obviously, we're hungry and confused, but how about a little empathy or an earnest apology? I think that could have gone a long way. And then an hour and a half later, capping out at 28 banh xeos when we preordered 50 is definitely not a good look. He was quick to pack up at 8:30 to get to his next gig. I do not like to give a bad review for a catering person as they all seem to work very hard but I'm almost shocked at what I received from Hung at my husband's 40th birthday. After less than 3 hours of making bánh xeo we were asked to pay $900 including deposit for a party of around 50-60 people. We also had a taco catering elsewhere. Pricings were not the issue. It was how dirty his station was that embarrassed me with all my guests. The banh xeo station stuck out from every other station at the party and in the worst way. We overheard people commenting they will choose tacos because banh xeo set up looks unsanitary. Meats were put in ziplock bags instead of containers. Buckets of greens were on the floor. Right when he arrived and pulled out the pans they were thick in grease and grime as though he never cleaned them for years. A day before the party he even asked if we can move our whole event half an hour later! No, as a party vendor you don't ask the host to change the time with all their guests to accommodate you. Mind you I have booked him almost half a year in advance. We paid him almost 3 times that of tacos but what we received didn't justify the price. It's located on the second floor of Saigon Supermarket (there are signs indicating where to find it) and the area has other small restaurants there as well. There are many tables with a lot of seats, so if you have a large party, it shouldn't be a problem. We ordered 5 bánh xèo, and they came out one by one; Chef Peter Hung made all of them by order. Also, there are no waiters, Chef Peter does it all! The bánh xèo came with a plate of leafy greens and a small dish of nc mm (fish sauce). I recently discovered the coolest new party food! Banh Xeo! Rather than getting a standard taco guy I decided to change it up and get a Banh Xeo Guy for my brothers surprise 30th birthday! I messaged Chef Peter about 5 days before the party and he was very accommodating and was able available to cater the party. We ordered banh xeo for around 30-40 people and wings as well. Everything was so delicious. The banh xeo was super crispy and packed with proteins and ton of flavor. The wings were grilled on the spot and very juicy. My brother is currently on dialysis so he has a limited diet and was not able to have coconut, which is an ingredient in the Banh Xeo batter. Chef Peter was very accommodating about this and made my brother his own batter. My brother tried his special banh xeo and it was as delicious as the others! It was still very crispy and packed with flavor as well. Very impressed! He also has other catered food options that I will be sure to try next time. The whole set up is so cool! Chef Peter arrived 30 minutes early and set up his own canopy and grill. It was very well thought out and he is super professional as well.
