Met Tony A here for a ride to Westley Hotel for dinner. Tony took me on a tour of the Inn. Mega history! This place has been around in one form or another since 1879. Great old bar, large dining room, great outdoor covered patio. Have to go back and spend some time here. Had a chance to check out the menu. Looks yummy! Steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, salads and their "famous prime rib" served every Friday! Rumor has it that they serve up a great breakfast here... Tucked in the middle of nowhere is Banta Inn. Apparently, this place is haunted and has been featured in a bunch of TV shows and even in a history book. I think if Tony and Emmalouise advertised their UYE as a ghost walk more people would've showed. Oh well, we took over the back room which is a good spot if you're hosting a lot of people. The food is decent. I had the personal sized pizza. The burger looked better though so I'll try that some other time. They offered a special 10% off check-in deal for us Yelpers and $1 Jello Shots for our UYE. The drinks looked pretty stiff. I opted out this time because I had such a long drive home. Thursday night is lingerie night so if you want to oogle the ladies that work there, that's the night to go. It got pretty hoppin' in the bar once 9pm rolled around. This is my first time visiting this place after seeing it for years. Thought it was only a bar tell I saw yelp reviews. I will definitely be coming back here from time to time. Food was good and service was even better. Had the 18oz ribeye and it was great . And cooked great nice a juicy. I was so hungry I cut into it a bit early before it had time to cool a bit so it dried out a bit but that was my fault and even dry it was still great. Kids also loved it. I thought a short ride to Lathrop to Ghirardelli Factory Outlet and back would be a nice ride for her and her kids... and most of the way in the Summer, at least, is not very much impeded by cars. Only one other table occupied by a woman and her elderly father... the farm-owners started to drift in at around Noon. Of all my visits here to Banta Inn... I'd have to conclude that the Rib-Eye Steak is definitely the best overall value at $19.99. A five-star selection for sure... But, Bike Riding on just Protein is not very good for you... Came in this past Monday because traffic on 205 was a mess and I'm lazy. Didn't want to cook. I was the only customer so I had the place to myself. It was my waitress' first night, I was her first customer and she and the staff were wonderful and very attentive. Had a bacon cheeseburger, garlic fries and tea. I was able to sit and do some reading. Even if the restaurant had a few more people it wouldn't have mattered. Just a really cute little out of the way place. I'll certainly be back. read more

I'm back...and here we are in true cowboy country! Old, been a saloon and eatery since 1873 and still going strong. Half bar, half eating area. Walls papered with license plates and some old signs. The bar, being the more central area is papered with yet many more plates, dollar bills and other money tacked to cover the ceiling and beams and a very busy bar itself. I feel like I am back in the 40s or in my single digit years at eastern taverns and western saloons. Casual, clean and ready to serve. Drinks are a decent pour and I did feel like some kind of sissy when my Manhattan came on a large, tall martini stemmed glass. My manhood in tact I raised the glass to the to the room, took it all down like an idiot and in a manly tone asked for another. My wife got up and went to the rest room. Our smiling waitress wore a smile indicating that she had a live one and went to check on our STEAK orders. They came! But after the great salads with house made dressings, choices of soup or salad, potato baked or fried or mashed Banta style, smushed with skins on or rice. GLORY BE! Giant baked potato, veggies and good hunks of meat.but, alas, the meat was rather average. However the veggies were not over cooked. I think this is an experience to have. Going here for years and went for a bday dinner the food was the most horrible dinner I've ever had. Everyone had horrible food at the table burger king would be better. Service was just as bad, the waitress was overwhelmed with 2 tables. I ordered a loaded potato and they brought me a cold potato with just sour cream and then brought me all the fixings on the side are you serious?. They had, two other restrooms but wouldn't allow the people attending a funeral reception, to use them. No one complained but it was on, everyone's mind. We have been coming to the Banta Inn as group of 8 to 10 plus for the last 4 years the first of each month for a group breakfast. Today is the last time we will be going to the Banta Inn, it really is a shame. They can't even keep thier wait staff anymore. The place did not open until gone 8am and even then we had to find the light switch to turn on in the restaurant area. It was 9am before someone asked us if we were ready to order, I told her we had been ready for 45 minutes. My Sun riser breakfast eventually came the eggs I ordered over medium came runny raw liquid, sent them back, then came out over done. Everyone in our party was complaining about the service and food quality. One guy in our party got his food around 9:45, (they had forgotten him). We had to wait until he finished before could leave, he did the only decent thing and boxed it to go. This place has no air conditioning running, we were all pretty uncomfortable for the duration. There was only one other couple in the restaurant the whole time we were there and they went and sat out back because it was so hot. Unfortunately for them the one server forgot they were there, so they had to keep coming back to the restaurant to get coffee refills and condiments. It's a shame this used to be a great place to meet for breakfast, unfortunately it has been circling the drain hole for sometime, we as a group have given the place 6 months more than it is due, and it has only got closer to the sewer. We happened to mentioned having gone to the Banta Inn to a friend .... she stated that she hadn't been there in over ten years; so here we are again!!! My companions both had the prime rib with veggies and baked potatoes; cooked to their preference - perfectly. The prime ribs on Friday appear to be very popular. I had the salmon with baked potato. It too was excellent. The waitresses here are the best that I've experienced in a while; whileas they have been comparable to others .... they have far exceeded most!!! When we arrived there were a few guests .... by the time we were leaving, they were coming in droves. read more

There was an underrated movie that was released last year called The Mist. It was directed by Frank Darabont and based on a novella of the same name by Stephen King. In the film a group of townspeople take refuge in a local supermarket as it is enveloped by "the mist." My time at the Banta Inn was a lot like the movie except you replace townies with out-of-towners and mist with the overpowering smell of horse shit. For the life of me, I can't figure out how the inside of the bar isn't permeated with the smell, but the nanosecond you step through the doors, you get an olfactory blast of freshly spread horseshit. Imagine if you were watching a horse poop and one of your friends picked up said poo and held it in front of your face... warm, fresh, horse poo. Now imagine not being able to escape that smell if you are outdoors. I think that is why we were at the Banta Inn as long we were. We didn't want to make the mad dash while pinching our noses out to the car. But while we were waiting for the smell to alleviate we did enjoy some ice cold three dollar Stellas. That's not too bad right? A little tip if you plan on spending some time at Banta Inn: Bring plenty of singles! Not for strippers but for the jukebox. The regulars like to listen to angry rock. The kind of music that makes you want to run home to your double wide and pull the gun rack of the wall and beat Floyd about the head. Floyd, your Mom's new boyfriend, who just moved in with you two after only meeting her once while she was working her double-shift at the local squat n' gobble. That kind of angry rock. So let's say, hypothetically, that you end up in Tracy, CA on a Saturday night. This will most likely never happen to you as you moved to San Francisco as a way to put distance between the "new" you and the inbred hillbillies of your Appalachian youth. But as it turns out, it actually did happen to a few of your favorite Yelpers this past weekend. Now, if you have just come from an All-You-Can-Eat Crab Feed after eating about 1,000 crabbies, finishing 3 or 4 boxes of the best wine Tracy has to offer, not to mention a bottle of Hangar One, you probably stink just like one of those hillbillies (substitute Krab for Crab and "rocket fuel" for Hangar One as hillbillies can't afford $40 a plate). And we did. It was a mix of seafood carnage and/or carcass and the sweet perfume of being out of place. Covered in a slick film of butter or olive oil or Portuguese sweat, it was time to taste what the local watering hole had to offer. We were worried that we would naturally offend anyone that was unlucky enough to be within 50 feet of us. But alas, our fears were calmed as we opened the car doors and realized that our Eau de Crab had not ONE thing on the deep, rich smell of fresh cow dung that clouds the Banta Inn. Safe from worry we drank like Kings at $2.50-$3.00 a pop. Top Shelf liquor is like $0.50 in this magical world of pleated mom jeans and hard-earned Fupas. And as the moonshine started to cloud our vision, we stumbled upon a greater realization. We didn't have to go back to our corporate jobs, overpriced studios and designer clothes in the city. We could stay and live like this forever in Banta. With a collective 6k, we could buy a 12 bedroom mansion, some horses (read: cows) and some diamonds (read: cubics) and be the Sovereigns (read: least likely to inbreed) of the Valley. If I could leave a review with 0 stars I would. When Joanie owned Banta Inn the food and service were awesome! We went at least once a week for dinner and frequently for breakfast on weekends. We've been back a couple times since ownership changed and the food and service are both unacceptable. Don't waste your time on this spot. We arrived at 12 and asked for a breakfast menu (they serve until 1) the waitress told us If one of us orders breakfast we all have to. She said the kitchen is tired. We ordered omelettes with sausage in it. When she brought our food the sausage was on the side and she told us we were lucky to have our food! Really?!? I so use to love this place. Its a hole in the wall dive, but comfortable and friendly. The quality and service have just hit bottom. Food overly greasly, service is slow and its basically heres your food and then a little later heres your bill. No follow up after delivering food. No refills. Didnt even get a second alcohol drink which I would have loved to have had the opportunity to order. Don't get me wrong I am not a prude I use to rave about this place, driving out of the way to go there. I love the old rustic look, cowboys, ranchers and bikers, but the quality has disappeared. I have never been in the bar portion of the Banta Inn, except on the way to the restroom. The negative reviews are about the bar. Enter through the side entrance and you will never see it. This is a great place. The burgers and steaks are excellent. The staff and patrons friendly. The Pabst Blue Ribbon (what my wife drinks) cold. This is not a large restaurant, though the back room allows a large group to be seated together. It took us several years to find this place--having once entered the bar by mistake. While this used to be one of my favorite places to dine in a small cozy environment with a haunted past history to go with it - was always a favorite haunt of mine. However, my daughter and I dined there a few weeks ago - spent $95 dollars on dinner that was very much disappointing. We started off our meal with an calamari appetizer which was great. We then proceeded to order dinner - my daughter ordered Prime Rib and we were told they were out when it was only 7:30 pm so she stuck with the chicken Alfredo. I ordered a steak medium well with potato and vegetables. Our salads came -which was minimal - not cold, fresh or even damp - like they took it out of a bag put it on a plate and added dressing. Our main entree came - my steak was bloody (and the family across from us had sent back a steak twice because it was not cooked right) - I sent it back and it came back 15 minutes later cooked correctly but plated with my original plate that had my original baked potato and veg's) that were now cold still sitting on the plate (not replaced, reheated... nothing). After dinner, my daughter order the apple pie with ice cream - I do not know what happened to this pie - but there was hardly any crust and the apples were dried out like it had been left sitting out - the whole meal was truly a very big disappoint and the service was no better. After all of this - you would think they would have complimented me with a drink or free dessert (which was awful) but nothing just a $95.00 check. So needless to say - my favorite place to have a steak dinner is no longer Banta Inn. I also ordered a margarita with no salt - it came to me tasting salty - they have horrible cocktails - you better off ordering a beer - they can't screw that up. This is one of those quirky little backroad local places that you just have to take as it comes. Yes, it's in the middle of nowhere. Yes, it's got a bunch of junk nailed to the wall. Yes, the carpet is older than old and grubby (my worst complaint). But, the food and service are good and decently priced. One half of the Inn is a grungy little bar that serves booze. It's not a club and it's not meant to be. You want a beer and a dark place to have a chat with friends - that's what you get. The other side is a restaurant that serves hearty family favorites. I've never had a bad meal there and have taken my mom there more than once for their Mother's Day buffet (which was great). The staff has been there forever and they know what they are doing. Your coffee cup will be full and your order will be right. My only issue is the carpet. Not only is it super old, but it is super dirty. I'm pretty sure it used to have a color and a pattern. It's black now. On one hand, what do you expect when the entire parking lot and walkways leading up to the restaurant are rocks and dirt? On the other hand - would it kill them to do a deep clean occassionally? No - it won't keep me from eating there, but I'd sure like to see that taken care of. read more

Used to go to Banta Inn frequently. Sure has changed! Third time's a charm. We're done. Walked in, sat down, fingers got stuck to the bottom of the chair. Table top was super sticky. No air-conditioning on 100° day. Waitress sees us, walks by without saying a word. Last two times we've been there the food was not great. How sad that such a fun place to go turned in this. Used to come here at least once a week, food and people were great, they had beer on tap. Their pizza's were sooo good and the cheese would stretch with every bite. Yesterday my wife and I stopped by after the fair and ordered 2 personal pan pizzas with one coke and a bottled beer since there was no more on tap. $30 later the pizzas were not like before, they were worse than frozen dollar store ones!
