I usually love Banter. They have a variety of delicious poutine options. I especially like the duck poutine. Today I wanted to try something different so I got a chicken shawarma sandwich and fries. The sandwich was made with a chicken thigh that was pretty juicy and the sauce on the sandwich was good. I will say the bread to chicken ratio was off. The bus was fresh and soft, but it was a lot, especially compared to the amount of chicken. There also wasn't enough of the sauce or overall flavor in the sandwich. It was fine, but not great. My family and I checked this place out while wandering through the Van Aken District. The menu item called the Cleveland caught my eye. It's a kielbasa with Bertman's, sauerkraut, and a pierogi on a hot dog bun. I know it's kind of cliché to slap a pierogi on something and call it "The Cleveland," but here's the thing... I don't care. I like pierogis and I'm from Cleveland, and if I see Bertman's and sausage and pierogis, I'm going to eat it and love it. The kielbasa itself was yummy. Great snap. The kraut was solid, and Bertman's is simply the greatest condiment ever made in my opinion. The pierogi was warm and fluffy. I was so happy. My daughter had a vegetarian Bahn Mi which she said was a 9.4, and she's a tough grader. I don't remember the last time she gave anything above a 9. My wife had a chicken shawarma that she said was very good, but she tried my daughter's order and mine and said that we clearly won. Extra points for them having a great selection of beers and bottles of Jarritos. I dont know who voted this the best Polish Boy but they are so, so wrong. The sausage was small and overcooked. It was hard and dry not juicy like they are supposed to be. Then the bun was toasted. Who toasts of Polish Boy bun? It also lacked the enough BBQ sauce and the coleslaw was not creamy and it had 5 fries on it. I went back amd asked for a little more sauce amd they wanted to charge me 50 cents. My friend bought one to and hers was the same and she didnt like it either. Banter is celebrating 10 year anniversary this weekend! I don't know why I waited 10 years to try Banter, but better late than never. I saw their weekend special on IG - Baba Yaga poutine. I had to try borscht gravy since I'm Russian and love to see borscht interpretations. AMBIANCE: Banter used to have a restaurant in Gordon Square, which unfortunately closed in February 2025. Their stand at the Van Aken Hall is still operational and going strong. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The hall is aesthetically pleasing, spacious, and has plenty of seating. You can grab your order at Banter then sit on a comfy couch, bar stool, table of booth. The space well suits solo guests, families, friends, and even people "working from home."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] FOOD/DRINKS: Banter is well known for bottles, sausage, and poutine. Bottles are organized on the shelves and in the fridges. You can sip at the Market Hall, walk around (it's DORA area), or take a bottle to go. Bottles include wine, beer, cider, THC drinks, and N/A drinks. Check if you need a special DORA cup. It's like a little market where you can pick up drinks then bring them to the counter to cash out. As far as the food menu, sausages range from CLE's classic Polish Boy, corn dogs, chili cheese dogs, and more. Poutines have so many options from veggie to meaty. Poutine is Canadian fries and savory toppings by the way. There are also starters and sliders on the menu. The best part about eating at the hall is that you can build your own plate and try a few stands. I was very surprised to have a taste for poutine. I once had it in Montreal at some highly recommended fast food eatery, and didn't like it at all. I was blown away by poutine at Banter, loved it! So we (CLE) do it better than the poutine home country! I ordered Baba Yaga poutine (aka Vladimir Poutine). It is one of the archived poutines only available for the weekend and usually reappearing once a year. There were two size options. I selected the largest -$15 (half order is $10). I HAD TO experience borscht gravy. I'm a huge borscht critic given my cultural origin, and this one receives my approval. Fries were pleasantly crispy. The gravy felt like eating a spoon full of beets from real borscht. There was just a bit of braised lamb but it was really tasty. My favorite part was the orange zest. I would never think to combine it with borscht but it added such a delicious zest. In short, Baba Yaga poutine includes braised lamb, cheese curds, Borscht gravy, orange zest, and a dash of greens atop crispy fries. I'd love if this dish would include dill to make it more culturally appropriate but that's just speaking from a place of loving dill. I also noticed that mulled wine was available on the menu! I love to experience mulled wines everywhere in winter, so I had to have it. To go cup was $10. It was perfectly spiced, not too many cloves or any other spices. It was such a heartwarming drink on a frigid day. They also sell it by bottle so you can heat it up on your own. I LOVED this mulled wine! It made me feel so warm and cozy. SERVICE: I had exceptionally great service at Banter, can't say the same about other stands where service is very average. Here I was able to ask questions about the menu, mulled wine, and just cordially chat with the checkout employee. She was incredibly friendly and warm. Really great service. My order was ready lighting fast within minutes. Mulled wine was immediately handed to me and poutine just took a few minutes. I didn't even have time to shop, which is a huge plus! PARKING: Free parking is available on surface lots, street parking, and parking garage. Basically if you want a casual comfort meal, check out Banter. Their menu is much more extensive than other stands, service is great, and orders are quick. I was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to checking out other poutines. For those that don't know, poutine is a Canadian/Quebec dish of fries, cheese curds, and beef gravy that became popular in the 1950's kind of like chili cheese fries in the US. Banter basically throws their spin on things by adding toppings to turn a bar snack into a legitimate meal. They even include tradition European stews such as stroganoff and paprikash as topping options. Ambiance: Came here on a weekend around 6 and it wasn't too busy. Staff were super friendly and helpful in answering questions about the menu. We ended up ordering 2 half-portions of poutine and a chili dog and our food took maybe 15 mins to prepare. They give you a handy buzzer so feel free to roam around. Food: Definitely hit the poutine first while the fries are still slightly crispy and the curds still slightly chewy. The longer you wait, the more the fries get soggy and the curds melt. Our poutine came our perfect and the gravies/stews were all very savory. We got the Baba Yaga and Pigs Fly which were both delicious and well-balanced with the Pigs Fly being our favorite. The half portions were a great way to try more flavors and surprisingly filling due to the heavy nature of the meal. The chili dog was also amazing with a classic meaty chili con carne flavor and a pillowy bun that held up well. I wouldn't normally put mustard in my chili but the acid really helped brighten up the dish. Overall I had nothing to complain about. Poutine, sausage, and (coming soon) bottles, oh my! This Gordon Square favorite has a new home as a trimmed down food stall in the new Van Aken Market Food Hall. Unfortunately the beverage tasting part of the Banter experience hasn't quite made its way east yet, but they're coming soon. Parking for the Food Hall is currently free in the conveniently located adjacent parking garage. Look for Banter between Scorpaciatto and On the Rise Bakery's stalls, where there's counter seating as well as picnic-style tables and couches to seat a range of parties. Without the bottles, the Van Aken Banter still has a strong opening with its full food menu. Though when three of us arrived around 7:30PM on a Saturday, many items including the Cheese Curds, kielbasa sausages, Banter Disco Poutine, and Extra Sloppy Slider were sold out. We settled instead on sharing the Pierogis, and I got a half order of Forest City Poutine and Cowboy Slider. The handy buzzer allows you to wander off to explore while the food is prepared. Maybe because things were dying down for the evening and they were running on minimal kitchen staff, it took a while for all of our food to come out, and the Pierogis were lukewarm. The gentleman working there were extremely nice and apologized profusely for the wait and comped us three water bottles to make up for it. They also have a water pitcher if you don't want to purchase bottled water or their non-alcoholic beverages. First off, the half portions of poutine are more than sufficient if you want to try a slider or appetizer as well. My Forest City Poutine seemed a little off-balance: too much umami in the veggie gravy and not enough almond truffle creme. Banter's pulled pork is great, whether on the Cowboy Slider or the When Pigs Fly Poutine, which one of my friends got. With the excellent collection of restaurants here, I'm sure I'll be back to the Food Hall and find myself sipping on some Banter beer soon enough. In the gallery you order at the counter and they give you a buzzer that goes off when you order is ready for pickup. The gallery provides a variety of seating options. I ordered the fish fry slider and the half Forest City Poutine. The slider was very good, a nicely toasted small bun with a wonderfully crispy catfish fillet topped with tarter sauce and some nice vinegary slaw. Overall an nice little snack and if all of the sliders are this good, well worth a try. The real highlight was the Forest City Poutine: a huge portion of fries topped with an overabundance of wild mushrooms, vegie gravy, and cheese curds. The fries are good, the huge portions of marinated mushrooms and velvety cheese curds were incredible. The mushrooms provide an wonderful earthy umami that contrasts with the melty richness of the curds. For the half size the portion was huge, if you get the full portion you had better bring some friends. Service was good, if a bit slow, but the time was well worth it if they are going to produce food this good. Van Aken Gallery is shaping up nicely and is well worth a visit. read more

I had my first ever poutine -- a half order of "When pigs fly" served in a sturdy cardboard bowl and it despite the combination sounding unusual (french fries, cheese curds, and gravy) it was surprisingly very tasty and filling. However, don't expect much meat as the dish us 3/4 fries and the only meat is a little bit in the gravy. With as little meat as there is, it almost qualifies as a vegetarian dish! So I took off a star. Personally I would not get a full order, first because the amount of french fries, gravy and cheese curds would be a heart attack in a bowl and second because with my friends that got the whole order, the bottom half of their fries were wet & soggy with gravy by the time they got to them. So unless u like soggy fries, I'd suggest the half order. With the half order they were still hot and crispy at the bottom. Be sure to get the roasted Brussels sprouts; there's enough for at least 2 to share and they are delicious. We didn't try the sliders but will try those next time. Being from Indianapolis, I really haven't gotten to experience anything like food hall culture and, well, its stunning: a plethora of diverse options that often highlight homemade favorites, different regional cuisines, and innovative dishes you wouldn't find at yor local restaurant. Banter is no exception: As I was meandering around, it was definitely hard to choose a place to eat lunch. After wrapping up an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic and wanting something different, we trudged over and I'm so glad we did! Poutine has been on my list for ages and while Indy joints can do it, few are vegetarian-friendly and appetizing, all at the same time. Banter had MANY options, all equally delicious-sounding. The forest city poutine was delicious, if I had to use a word to describe it. Fresh mushrooms and a lovely gravy with the right amount of almost everything: portions are huge as well. My half-order satiated three of us when eaten alongside pierogis and a few bakery items from one of the other stalls. (Pierogis are also worth the buy and frankly, I wish we had the appetite to try a few other starters and items too)! While walking around the Van Aken district, my friend and I decided to grab something to eat. We both had never eaten poutine before and were intrigued. Banter offers creative twists on a typical poutine. They have a great variety to offer their customers. It took us both a while to decide on our final orders. Banter offers half or fills depending on how hungry you are! I ordered the buffalo chicken poutine, my friend ordered the corn dog poutine. When my friend ordered the worker was slightly.. confused?? He told her no one ever orders that one. His reaction made us a little concerned if she even should have ordered it! Banter has free water at its location. It also has compostable diner ware. The bowls are impressive once freshly made. They look like carnival food! My bowl was very tasty. It wasn't too spicy and the chicken was cooked fell. The fries remained a good texture, never getting soggy. It was very tasty. The only thing I did not like, was the fact that all the creative toppings were at the very top. Delicious!! I loved this place - one thing to note: If you're from out of town, make sure maps is taking you to the Shaker Heights address. Apple Maps took me to 3441 Tuttle Rd, Cleveland and that is NOT the place even though the listing was for "Banter Shaker" (it was not) so just double check. We got the polish boy and the Banter poutine. I can't say enough good things about the polish boys. I was looking to try something super "Cleveland" and was so glad I did. The Van Aken market hall is super cute and has places to shop, get more drinks or dessert and sit outside or inside with the family. The poutine was delicious as all poutine is, but I would try one of their more creative options for the poutine if you want a more unique version. Loved it! read more
