Not sure how to feel about this place. The first time I had the vegetarian xiao long bao, they were amazing. The second time, they were cold and not memorable. The salt and pepper vegetables were so good, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. The vegetarian dumplings were fine. I love the window into the kitchen so you can see the dumplings being made. Pretty good dim sum place on Valencia with quick service, and lots of seating outdoors and indoors. Great option if you're craving authentic Chinese food in the mission. I think this is a much better value than Palette but not as good as Dumpling Time. Unlike either of those places though, there's no wait for a table The best dish we ordered was the baked giant bun with chicken. The bun was crispy and soft - kind of like a pineapple bun without the sweetness, and the filling was delicious chicken with a curry flavor. Pretty unique dish - would highly recommended! The XLB and Chinese broccoli were pretty good but nothing special compared to other dim sum places. We also ordered sweet bun special. I didn't find the prices as scandalous as I had been led to expect. You get to choose which kind of tea you would like -- from tea bags. No carts -- it's a "check the box" order form. Some come much much much more slowly than others. Flavors were great. The "spicy" beef and kimchi was not at all overpowering and a nice surprise on the menu. A lot of repetition I the menu in that each dumpling style in the menu gets a chicken, beef, pork and seafood option. So there's not as much variety as the menu might at first suggest. I tried the chicken bao, beef and kimchi mandu, and the shrimp and scallop dumplings. I enjoyed them all and would order again. The mandu and chicken bao were the most interesting. The only flaw was the general stickiness of the dough. The shrimp and scallop fell apart because they stuck to each other. And it was very hard to get the paper off the bao. read more

This is my third time at Bao and I like the consistency and flavor of this place. I came here on a Sunday afternoon since my friend wanted some light dim sum. I'm not particularly a fan of fried foods that much but gave it a try at this spot. The staff in the back are all Chinese so that's a good sign that this was gonna be authentic. We started off with their sti fried string beans which was very flavorful and had a nice wok seared taste. Loved it and would get again. Next, we got their salt and pepper chicken wings.They were pretty big lol and had the traditional salt and pepper jalapeño flavor I was looking for when it comes to Chinese chicken wings. Next, we got the shrimp balls which is a favorite of mine. The fried part was super crispy while the shrimp inside was juicy. In a sentence: Bao is an overrated and underwhelming East Asian inspired dim sum joint that struggles to understand its own identity. My friend and I came here on a busy Sunday evening and were able to get an indoor table within 15 minutes which was nice. Dim sum is supposedly a Chinese thing, but the menu was weirdly eclectic with Korean and Japanese hybrid options. For some odd reason, the only alcohol options were Japanese as well. We ordered: * Sichuan Xiao Long Bao - 6/10: actually kinda tasted like Sichuan food, but the implementation was kind of off * Steamed Sweet Lava Bao - 8/10: can't really mess this up, but wish there was more filling * Steamed Pork and Shrimp Shumai - 7/10: a solid pick, can't really go wrong with this either * Chives Seafood Dumplings - 5/10: way more neon than what the pictures suggest, tasted average/even worse than an authentic Chinese place * Pan Fried Chicken Pot Sticker - 5/10: generic Japanese-style dumplings that you can get anywhere, even frozen * Baked BBQ Pork Bao - 8/10: the star of the show, but honestly it's just as good as a place that's not "fancy" * Golden Egg Fried Rice - 6/10: fried rice you can find at any Chinese takeout joint What irked me the most was that the service was authentically Chinese, meaning they were impatient, made errors (messed up our order), and didn't really check up on us. Disappointingly, I've seen a regression. Increase in averageness coupled with significantly increased prices. Though a positive is that they deliver. The taro curry puffs, which were once flavorful and balanced...are now overfilled with taro and very little curry filling, and also missing their cute swan heads. The price also increased by almost 40% on these (from $6.25 to $8.50 in less than a month), so hard PASS. The pan fried chive and shrimp dumplings ($9.5 for 5) were super flavorful and previously made delectable with the small addition of numbing pepper...but are now missing the distinguishing numbing pepper. The sweet bao special ($9.5 for 4) is now suuuuper tiny! See my picture, where they fit into a small ziploc sandwich bag with room to spare. Still cute, but nai wong and sweet lava are still slightly over baked, the price increased $.75, and jeez they're extra tiny now. The only redeeming thing about our entire order today was their baked bbq pork buns ($7.25 for 3), which were fantastic! Outside is very light and flaky crispy, which stands out from typical dim sum spots which have a thicker or softer coating. Also tried their bi Feng tang har gow ($9.5 for 4), which was flavorful with the garlic black bean crispy topping, but the skin was way too thick to eat enjoyably. I know that some of the reviews have had very differing opinions on certain dishes, and I can see why--they seem really inconsistent with their preparation/execution. It will probably be a while before I give them another chance and order from here again. So sad! read more

We liked everything we tried, and we will for sure be back again. They have so many options for their Baos and all the other dim sums. We liked having the choice between pork, chicken, beef, seafood and veggie in almost all the items. Sometimes you are limited to 2 choices at other places. The flavors were perfect and the portion sizes are reasonable. I think their only okay player was the chicken noodles, as we were expecting just a little more for a $20 plate, compared to all the other items on the menu. Came here after watching a movie at the Roxie. It is very romantic that we can walk around, talk about movies, and find a cute place like Bao. We ordered several dim sum with a cute corn dessert. I would say the food is ok compared to other places. The salt and pepper squid was a bit too salty, and the crab dumplings lack a strong crab flavor. Such a cute and lovely spot! I went here for a date night with my partner, and I was so happy to see all the vegetarian options. I usually never get to fully enjoy dim sum meals or dumplings because there often aren't a lot of vegetarian items to choose from. The steamed buns and dumplings were all so delicious, and they have the tastiest and cutest desserts, including a dessert bao sampler and jiggly coconut bunnies. This is just what the Mission has been missing - a great dumping place. I found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to stop by for some dim sum with a good friend on Memorial Day weekend. We're both dumpling snobs but we were both really happy with this outing. We ordered the bi feng tang shrimp dumplings, baked BBQ pork Bao, steamed shrimp dumplings, crab xiaolongbao (XLB), seafood pot stickers, fried won tons, pork and shrimp siu mai and crispy taro puffs and the baked Portuguese egg tarts. The Excellent - highly recommended the baked BBQ pork bao (really buttery and flaky bun), crab XLB, seafood pot stickers and crispy Portuguese egg tarts. The Average but still Good - the pork and shrimp siu mai and the two shrimp dumplings (regular steamed and bi feng tang). The Interesting - the fried curry Taro puffs came with a swan head - it's cute and OK but not that tasty. Probably Pass Next Time - the fried won tons had way too much cream cheese. Service was excellent and I really love the ambiance of the place (as soon as you walk in, you see the chefs making dim sum in a window and you get the "I'm not in the Mission anymore" vibe). Price-wise, most of the dim sum ranged from $6-$9 and sharing six things for two people is plenty (we went overboard that day). Highly recommended!!! P.S. Okay, personally I LOVED Bao. The food was spot on. The branding was SO cute, omg. I should possibly dock one star because I don't think we had the best service, but in my opinion, the food made up for it. For me, eating food that's themed and super cute improves taste 100%. We came here around 6pm on Friday evening thinking there would be a big line but we were immediately seated and we were very surprised at how attentive their service was. The food was truly delicious! Nothing felt too heavy or greasy for Chinese food. glad I found this since I am always craving dumplings. this is the first restaurant I've tried that serves vegetarian XLB and they're allium-free, no onion & no garlic. there are quite a few other vegetarian options on the menu as well. will definitely need to come back to try more things. the sweet buns were tasty but looked nothing like the model photos. in fact, they just looked lumpy???? but i don't judge food by how it looks thaaat much. i've had pretty good luck finding street parking within a block pretty quickly. read more

All those dim sum weekends my family took me on, I've had it all and can tell you exactly what's great dim sum and what's not. I didn't have high expectations when I came to Bao (so I don't leave disappointed), but I expected more than what I received. Let's start with their interior, decor, it's cute, refined, small spot in the busy Mission, it fits right in. Their ceiling had these really nice dangling lights that really puts the whole place together. I ordered the chicken and veggie baos, mango and shrimp appetizer, shui mai and a sampler platter. It sucks to say this, but the food was alright only. Pretty much every bamboo steamer we got, the dim sum was all in some weird positioning, not sure if they moved around or what, but that was a turn off for me right away. The flavors was just not there, it didn't have the authentic dim sum flavors I was looking forward to. Oh, and also I found it totally unacceptable that they had no rice rolls on their menu, why?! That's a dim sum staple! If you're looking for a quick fix and in the area, they're a good place to stop by, but don't have high expectations if you're a dim sum connoisseur. read more

Although this place gets a lot of foot traffic and has an almost cult following in SF, I still wanted to offer my review. On weekends, the wait for this place can be lengthy - especially with an outdated first come, first serve write your name down style. Chairs can be crowded on the sidewalk, or you can be lucky and get seating inside the restaurant. The vegetarian options here are plenty, with my tried and tested favorites being the vegetarian steamed dumpling, vegetarian bao, and stir fried garlicky beans. However, expect to be disappointed with some of the portion sizes for the shared plates. We went to Bao on a saturday morning looking to get some dim sum around the area and came across Bao. We were able to get a seat outside and were seated promptly. We got the standard dim sum fare from siu mai to har gow, which were all pretty good. However what really blew us away was the BBQ pork bun. The top is like bolo bun, and the inside had really good BBQ pork. It was really the highlight of the meal. Bao is a great spot for a group dim sum outing. I went with two friends on a Friday night at around 6:00PM, and there was absolutely no wait. Later in the night, however, we noticed a line forming outside, so the place can tend to get busy. They usually have a sign-up sheet outside that you can put your name on. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are pretty substantial. Everything was delicious, from the Chicken Bao, to the Green Beans, to the Shrimp Siu Mai. Everything was flavorful and perfectly cooked. My friends and I had a wonderful time. Definitely will come back for a dinner where I don't feel like taking my car or public transportation. read more

My sister went here a couple days prior and told me there was a new dumpling place within walking distance from our house! It's so hard to fulfill my dumpling craving without having to drive or order in so I was very excited to try it out. My boyfriend and I walked in at around 6, not too many people inside yet. Upon walking in there were tables in the front, with high tops in the middle, followed by lounge tables in the back. You can see the chefs make the dumplings in the window, so you know they are fresh and made to order!!! We ordered the food (they have temporary menu and will expand menu options later) and in about 15 minutes they all came! We started out with the veggie baos (which we ate and forgot to take pictures of- hungry hippos). The mushrooms tasted so good! Our favorite was of course the 小笼包 or Xiao Long Bao. I returned home from Shanghai in 2020 due to covid and missed them dearly. These tasted juicy and authentic! They provide you with a cute sweet soy sauce pitcher and a chili oil saucer. The chili oil isn't terribly spicy, which I liked, but if you want spicy, ask for extra! By the time we left at around 7pm, the indoor dining tables had filled up all the way! I would call in advance to make sure that there is space, as the venue is on the smaller side. Overall ambiance is 10/10, food is 10/10, prices are 10/10 and service was 10/10. Would go back read more
