The best Lu Ruo Fan in SF!
    Vicky K.

The best Lu Ruo Fan in SF since Taste of Formosa closed! Even better than Red Hot Wok in Cupertino. The moment we spot Ashyan's email opening up the dish for pick up, we immediately jumped on it, since we live outside of her delivery area. Sign up for her email list; watch out for those emails! The flavors are balanced and vibrant. The texture is melt in your mouth goodness. The portion is plenty. There is really no complaints to the dish. 100/10 recommend!

I'm a big fan of small-menu food. You know that what you are going to get is good when the star dish is the menu. You see it most often in street food, but even a few brick and mortars have made their way with limited menus. AshYan fits the bill and delivers in spades with an out-of-sight Lu Ruo Fan. Hearty, rich, and delicious. Do the extra egg, especially when you're splitting it. If you have the option to order an additional item - I also had chicken noodle soup - go for it!

I been wanting to try Ashyan's Lu Ruo Fan for awhile now, but due to the pandemic and distance I couldn't. More recently they offered delivery in my neighborhood in the Outer Richmond and I jumped on the chance! I ordered the LRF for delivery and it came exactly in the provided timeline. The food was still warm and didn't require any heating! The food is very saucy and never felt dry as some other places I have tried. The meat was insanely tender and the flavors packed a punch. Consistency is also good, I have had this twice now across multiple days with no issues. Reheating the food from the fridge was fine as well the next day. It did no diminish the flavors or textures of the meat. In short I highly recommend trying this at least once :)

A friend posted about this Lu Ruo Fan delivery service and I decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed! I'm not normally a fan of rice-forward dishes, but the sauce had such umami (maybe from the slow roasted meat?) that each bite was lusciously rich. I only ate 2/3 of it and was full - the rest I refried the next morning and scrambled an egg into it (highly recommended). Only downside was that distribution appears to be only occasional. So if a delivery window opens, jump on it!

I was kind of disappointed after becoming very excited by the reviews and watching Chef Sze's YouTube video on Taiwanese Lou Ruo Fan. The meat was more like little minced pieces than small chunks of pork belly. Flavor was very mild. Eggs were over cooked with gray rings around the yolks. I have not eaten this anywhere else before so I can't really compare. Maybe this is the usual way it is made. The chef seem really nice so I gave it 3 stars even though we all were really disappointed.

We got the Lu Ruo Fan with extra tea eggs and I honestly can't stop thinking about their perfect texture drool emoji). And that tender pork just hits! Something about the combination of savoriness and fragrant spices in AshYan's preparation of this dish makes it incredibly comforting yet nuanced. Since the portions are quite generous, we wound up with some leftovers, which for some epic pork fried rice tossed together in the trusty cast iron. Can't wait for the next delivery drop!

This was my third time ordering Ashyan's LRF! The meals are consistently delicious, flavorful, fresh and filling. The food, the delivery, and the experience all feel very personal and different than typical restaurant / takeout. I am excited to try new foods, and Taiwanese LRF has become one of my favorites. Ashyan's often switches up the menu and includes something fresh and interesting - this time, Ube (purple yam) milk tea. The portion has been large enough to stretch into multiple meals in the past which allows me to prolong the experience and flavors. It also gives me the opportunity to share the flavor others! Overall, it feels great to support a presumably small business run by someone who cares about embodying a home cooked and personal feeling!

Can't get enough of AshYan's super flavorful Lu Ro Fan with a side of perfectly gooey tea eggs. I haven't been able to find this traditional Taiwanese dish anywhere else in the city prepared with such quality. The portions are also generous enough that I can usually make it last two meals, especially if I add a side of veggies. Ashley is also super sweet and helpful -- very easy to order from. Will definitely be ordering again!

Ashley's Lu Ruo Fan was the delicious Taiwanese-style comfort food I needed after a long day at work! The meat and rice were perfectly flavored. Excited to have more soon :)

The food was decent, but the packaging was a dealbreaker. Every single item comes in a non-reusable plastic container. Even setting aside environmental concerns, the sheer volume of waste was unmanageable: my garbage goes out every other week and was already full. The cost also didn't pencil out. Even with the discount, Thistle ran more than what I currently spend eating out for the same number of meals, and it didn't reduce my grocery bill either.

I walked into the restaurant about 45 minutes before closing time at 9:30 PM and several other diners came in after I was seated. The unsettled weather made the people hungry for dumplings. Bao is warm and woody and serene on the inside, a great counterpoint to the bustle of Valencia at every hour. Upon entering there is a large window looking on to the kitchen prep area where culinary experts are often at work constructing the food diners later enjoy on their plates. Tonight a couple of wizards were in the process of making chicken potstickers. Even being vegetarian, just seeing how the dumplings and other items are made is like seeing secrets being shared. I love it and it sets the vibe for the restaurant. My order consisted of the steamed vegetarian buns and sautéed string beans. The buns come out beautifully presented and taste even better: the bun itself is just slightly sweet and that sweetness adds an amazing dimension to the chopped fresh vegetables inside. Can't tell you what any of these veggies are individually and I don't care, they are so good. Next came the sautéed string beans and the sear on the beans themselves was perfect and smoky and delicious. The crispness of the sautee makes the string beans a lovely pairing with the soft yummy of the steamed buns. Last came the sesame balls as a sweet meal ending. I love donuts and fresh-made sesame balls are similar to a donut hole just with a filling that is actually food and so sweetly tasty. The outer fry was crisp and the insides absolutely perfect. Three dishes, all fantastic, and I walk home happy and thankful to Bao for a great simple meal!
